Harker walked quietly into the gym, wearing what was likely the only pair of shorts he owned. Combined with the plain black T-shirt he was wearing, the outfit emphasized the skinniness that usually lead him to wear hoodies. After some internal debate, he had left his sunglasses in his dorm, deciding that wearing shades in the gym would draw more attention to his eyes than his eyes alone would.
Of course, he thought. The people around here are probably used to weirder stuff than red eyes...
He sat down at a machine that looked promising, one that worked-out the upper body in general. He sat down, gripped the handles, and pushed up and out.
The handles barely moved, and a sound best transcribed as "Hnnrrghk!" escaped his mouth before he stopped.
He looked down at the weight setting, and saw that it was set at a whopping thirty-five pounds. He sheepishly moved it down to twenty-five, wondering if anyone had noticed.

Daniel walked in the weightroom with a smile on his face, and a water bottle in hand. Another session of intense weight training was ahead. He hadn't noticed the other kid on the machine or how much he was lefting. 'Alrighty I'm doing high reps today so what should I do to warm up? Hmm....let's see here.' he thought as he walked over to a bench and load on about 135 lbs. on it. The He went over to one of the freeweight squat racks and loaded it up to about 225 lbs.

Not knowing anyone is in the room, Daniel drops under the squat and lifts it off the rack . He squats until he gets about to where his thighs are parallel with his hips, and explodes up to a standing postion. He does this twelve times before putting it back on the rack, and stepping out of the squat rack. " Phew that gets the heart pumping!"

Harker was slowly (and almost painfully) pumping the machine handles up and down. He had never had the chance to be very physically active, and he had never been more aware of that fact than right now. Still, he couldn't deny that he was getting a decent workout, and that was what he had wanted... moving his luggage into his dorm-room had proven that he was badly out of shape.
He paused a moment to breath, and saw another student enter the gym, loading up a bar with what looked like a great deal of weight.
At least I won't be the only one struggling, Harker thought. The student was well-muscled, but that was still a lot of weight...
As the thought fired across his brain, the other student did twelve swift squats and shrugged it off like it was a warmup.
I really need to remember where I am, now...

Daniel's eyes rove the room for a sec after that set. Finding another student among the machines he gives a slight nod for greetings. Torn between wanting to talk a little, and his duty he picks. His duty. In his mind, He's got to finish his five sets first before any socializing takes place.

Putting 135lbs. on the bench bar and begins to do another 12 reps. During each rep he slowly brings the bar down to touch his chest before speedily bringing it back up. 'Breathe in with the weight, Breathe out.' Setting the barpick on the rack he goes back to squat adjusts the weight and does a set of 10, then 8, 6, and finally ending at four.

Daniel looks at the squat rack and sweatdrops. 'Dang haven't done this much in a while.' Strapping on a nearby weight belt he hesitantly walks up the rack with 405 lbs. He takes a few deep breathes before getting in the mindset of lifting, then a small idea hits him. 'Well I do need a spotter.'

"Hey, could you spot me over here?" he calls across the room to the thin guy at the machines.

Harker did a few more sets on the machine, half-watching the other student out of the corner of his eye. The massive amount of weight the other student was lifting was at once making him feel pathetically weak and giving him something to shoot for. He doubted he would ever be described as muscular, but some actual upper-body strength would be nice...
"Hey, could you spot me over here?"
Harker blinked and looked around, but he and the other student were the only two in the gym.
Me?
"Uh, I suppose so," he called back in his light English accene, letting the weights on the machine clank back into place. He had been about ready to stop anyway, given the amount of protest his muscles were giving him.
He trotted over to the other student, wiping the sweat out of his dark-red hair. As he approached, however, he blinked -- and felt a sudden burst of ignorance.
"Er, what would that entail... exactly...?"

"Er, what would that entail... exactly...?" Daniel stops for a second trying to take a deep breathe before he decide here to start his explaination.

"Well when I squat you put your forearms under my armpits. Like so." he stands behind harker and demonstrates "...as I go down you follow me so if I get to a sticking point and fall...I won't get hurt." he squats down demonstrate a sticking point. "However do NOT touch me if I'm struggling, if and only if I'm falling" Daniel hoped he go the point but equally hoped that he wouldn't need a spotter.

He grabs the bar with both hands and glares at it. In one quick motion he drops under and positions the bar just right. Daniel looks over his shoulder at his spotter. "Ready?"

"Okay..."
Harker took up the position the light-haired student had demonstrated, hoping to whatever deities were listening that the boy didn't fall. The student was at least a foot taller than him while standing, and Harker was unsure that he would be able to provide enough lift in case of a 'sticking point'.

"Alright then!" He grunts taking the bar off the rack with much difficulty. Fiery eyes give way to a locked expression as he goes down breathing in the first rep. He's in the zone, everything in the universe had been simplified into two motion and two objects. Up and down. The bar and himself.

He plunges down slowly hitting parallel, then grunting loudly pushes back up. That's one Daniel isn't counting, he is in a battle with the weight which threatens to defeat him if he so much as breathes out of rythm. He goes down for another rep shaking slighty from the weight and extreme pressure put on his legs. Coming back up much slower this time he knows there isn't much left.

On his third trip down he is in the groove, almost allowing a thought to escape, but is brought back to the present by the wieght of the bar. Going up at a snails pace he hits a sticking point, and pushes out screaming a bit."..AHH!"

Final rep. His legs quake as he goes back into his squatting postion, however he keeps his composure. "AHHHH!!"Daniel starts back up as he yells to keep from hitting a sticking point. His efforts are in vein as he hits one but continues yelling pushing out the bar, as vein appear all over his neck and head. Exhausted he walks the bar onto the rack, and drops to the floor spent, giving a thumbs up to his spotter.

Harker felt relieved as the student put the bar back on the rack, but then moment of panic as he flopped down. It was brief, however, as the student gave him a thumbs up.
He walked over and squatted beside the now-horizontal form.
"That was pretty impressive," he said. It didn't seem to quite grasp the situation from Harker's point of view, but it was the best he could come up with.

Daniel points a quaking to the squat rack. "Your turn." he says in an exhausted tone that one could only make out as such. He thought a joke would lighten the mood as he regrouped himself to finish his workout.

After a minute or two, he slowly rolls over unceremonously and brings his arms up to his armpits. Then slowly pushing up off the floor, he goes into a pushup position putting one foot under him. The other foot followed its mate slowly as he stood erect in front of his fellow student. His eyes were blurry and his hair in a mess but one locked them on the skinny kid. "Thanks for the spot, Daniel Walters."

He wipes off his sweaty palm on the back of his shirt and offers it to the other student.

"You're welcome. Harker Jone," Harker said, taking Daniel's slightly sweaty palm. He looked, at the moment, similar to how Harker felt -- tired and sweaty, but satisfied at the workout. And in desperate need of a shower.
"Is it usually this empty in here...?" It wasn't a major question to Harker, but he felt the need to fill in the empty spots in a conversation.

"I personally don't know...ya see I really haven't been here all that long. So, I really and truly have no possible clue how crowded it can be." Daniel looks off at the equipment which is in tip top shape. The shine showing off some of the machines leads him to make calculations on the age and wear of the machines

"It hasn't been used that terribly much so my guess would be no. Did you come here to specifically train for something Harker?" Daniel leans over on the side of the squat rack brushing off an arm before looking back up to him.

"Nothing really specific," Harker said. "But I have about zero upper-body strength..." He felt that he did not really need to elaborate any more. His T-shirt showed his utter lack of muscle better than he ever could have. The immediate impression Harker usually created was that of a red-headed string bean.
"I don't need to be super-muscular, but I'd like to be able to lift a bookbag without straining."
