Upon a small, rounded hill north of the lake laid a very pretty, but very pale girl, about the age of 15 by the name of Tori. She rested comfortably with her knees drawn up close, wearing the more conservative of girl’s uniforms that could be seen bouncing about the shore of the lake, even at these wee hours. Instead of wearing short skirts, sandals, or a short-sleeved shirt like most of the girls, she sported a long-sleeved shirt was seemed a bit large for her, as it cast the edges of the sleeves well past her wrist line. Her skirt was long and draped past her knees, meeting the top of her knee-highs before it ended. Instead of sandals she wore the regular flats issued during the school year, and it seemed most of her body was covered. Only a small amount of white flesh peaked out on her fingers and about her neck, and of course her face. No leg peeped out, her midriff stayed concealed in the safe cavern of Tori’s blouse, and any chest she had to bare was stuck within the confines of her buttons. At the horizon to her east the sun broke into a light, casting pink and orange and red across the rippling surface of the lake. Tori squinted a bit into her now-glowing right to watch a boy walking his dog trot slowly with his pet happily alongside him. How cute. She hadn’t known anyone past sixth grade that would walk their dog. The summer sweat of the air set in and she felt stickiness build upon her arms, not from her own condensation but from the humidity that was already building up around dawn. Tori leg go of her grasp on her legs and fell back, letting the long, curved things stretch out as well as her upper body. Her stomach grumbled irritably, but instead of rising to grab breakfast she felt her body sink into the warm of the ground and she just laid in the grass, watching pinkened clouds slowly slip by. She hadn't been a new kid in years, and never had she realized how much she missed her old friends. |

Faria stretched, crawling out of her tent into the quickly growing tempuratures of the morning air. Unlike Tori and her full, long-sleeved shirt, Faria wore a purple bodice that stretched down to just above her navel. It was trimmed with lace and she wisely wore a camisole underneath as not to reveal more than she wished to show. Though the bodice was sleeveless, she had black and white striped hand sleeves pulled up to her elbows. She wore a fairly short skirt, but it revealed nothing either, for she wore black and white striped leggings that kept her well covered. She wore her mid-calf-length boots and a necklace that bore a small red heart surounded by small, dull, spikes. She took a deep breath and walked through the trees to the edge of the lake. On her way she passed a girl lying in the grass, but didn't notice, still waking up. She stood at the edge of the water, just out of reach of the waves, and she stretched, greeting the morning sun. She yawned, but then stopped mid-yawn and turned around, feeling that there was another being around. She looked down to the girl on the ground, her face almost expressionless, but a little shocked if anything. "Hello, I'm sorry, I didn't see you there." Faria noticed the girl's longer than normal skirt and hesitated. A Yankee? No, the skirt was a bit long for her to be one... but then again... Her lips tightened. She'd had many meeting with gangster-women before, and wasn't fond of them. She didn't hate them, but was, if you could believe it, afraid. Unlike Tori, again, Faria'd had moved plenty of times, her stays in one area usually no more than six months long. Her family also usually moved to the worst areas of a town, those areas being cheaper, but also giving Faria many opportunities to run into Yankees. It was strange that she never became one herself, but then, she'd never been around a neighboorhood to join any such gangs. She tried not to show that she was a little scared, for she wasn't quite sure, but her old fears bubbles up to the surface and she was unable to be totally fearless. |

It was quite a shock to suddenly see Faria's giant stripes cross into Tori's close field of vision, and then block out the sun. Suddenly sitting up, staring after the obscurely (though well) dressed girl who was now yawning by the lakeside, stretching widely. Then, as if she only quite quickly felt Tori's presense gazing at her, she turned around quickly and spoke to Tori, thought no without an odd look at her unweatherly attire of long-sleevs and covered legs. Looking still shooken up, the girl with lilac eyes smiled softly. "Oh, it's okay. You scared me a bit, but it happens." Whatever flickered on the other girl's face before was now gone, so Tori decided to not mention it, and in fact forget it completely. Not knowing what to say, her smile when softer and she stood up herself in nervousness, now meeting the intruders eyes. Both were dark and pretty; they kind of reminded Tori of the bay when the fog rolled in. With a wider, more confident smile, she spoke again, her short strand blowing at a rhythym with the wind. "I'm Tori Puronna, but it would be nice if you didn't mention my last name to anyone, because I don't like it at all. Who're you?" |

Faria eased up a bit when the girl introduced herself. Instead of the rude remarks that she was expecting, she was quite glad that she'd gotten such a polite greeting, even if she had interrupted this girl's rest. Any suspicions she had faded and she bowed politely, introducing herself. "My name's Faria." She smiled at the girl's comment about her last name. She decided not to ask why, though. It was her business, if she wanted Faria to know why she would have said. Her, on the other hand, preferred to keep her last name to herself entirely, wishing not to expose that she was a relative to her father. She looked out over the lake, the steam that spread over the surface was becoming more and more thin. Soon it would be gone... Somehow this made her sad. She rather liked the steam, meaning that night was just fading. But she knew that she'd have to let go of the night sometime and wait for the evening to come again. She noticed herself staring at the water and turned back quickly to Tori. "Oh! I'm sorry for disturbing you, I can move down farther if you'd like?" She tugged absentmindedly on a string from her hand sleeve. She, of course, was glad for the company, but wouldn't intrude on another's if that was what they wished. |

"What? No! Someone must be crazy o refuse company when it oh-so-literally walks in on them." Tori gave her a kind, light, filled with flashing white teeth and a glimpse at what looked like a pierced tongue. The purple haired girl was still going over this new girl's name in her mind. Faria. What a pretty, unusual name. Sure, there were many pretty names, even some that were used every day, but it was rare to come in contact with someone who had such a different but appealing name. "I'm almost surprised... I was pretty sure most of the lake was epty except for a few kids over there," she said, pointing indirectly to where groups of sort-of hippie kids began a game of hackey sack and the boy continued his long trot around the lake. "Where'd you come from, anyway? Were you back in the forest or just hiding behind me?" Her tone was playful but her eyes were interested, being as curious of a girl as she was. if there were nice spots to sit and relax that were a bit away from regular human attention, Tori wanted to know about them. How else was she supposed to avoid her housemates and all the other kids at school when she wanted to be alone if she had no one to go? A little, soft laugh pressed between her full pink lips. "Unless I'm losing my touch and just passed by you without noticing?" |

"Oh" Faria scratched the back of her head. She was embarassed because of her situation, but it was no secret and she kept her things well locked up so she didn't mind telling other students if they asked. "I live there, on the edge of this forest." She sat down facing Tori and plucked a blade of grass, slowly ripping it up into little strips. The new dorm houses were built soon after she'd started school here. She'd signed up for a room like they were all instructed, but for some reason she wasn't sorted and given a room. She'd sent a form, not really complaining, but telling them that she hadn't been sorted. Instead of taking care of it, though, the school was too busy attending to the students who'd already been sorted to bother with her. According to Cyan (she sighed to herself) there wasn't any hot water in the new dorms and it was the school's highest priority at the moment. She accepted it, though. What was her comfort to hundreds of others? To her it really was no biggie. She could live in the forest in her tent. It was just another obstacle in life, something that she'd have to learn to get around on her own. She didn't mind it much either. After living in a city her whole life, it was interesting living in a small tent, different. Plus it helped her escape from memories that the dorm rooms would give her about her life before the High School. She sighed again, a different sigh, a somewhat sad sigh. Whatever, just another challenge. She'd learn to live with it. |

The moment got slightly awkward for several silence-filled seconds, and Tori watched Faria closely, wondering if she was okay. It was mostly quite on her end, as if she was had just gone into a some deep, depressing thoughts. Trying to lighten to the mood without giving clues it had gotten a little dark, she stretche dout on the grass, and gave Faria a playful smile. "Wow, that's pretty nice. It's actually kind of stuffy in the dorms, so maybe sleepign in a forest just seems refreshing after stuffy-nose nights," Tori said, her grin wide and her tone conversational. Meanwhile, her hand fiddled with eachother, grasping and pulling and twidding, sometimes bending forth to play with the clasp on the cuff of her sleeves. Her toes bobbed and her head rocked slowly with the wind, as if it were light particles being thrown about but not disconnected. She pulled her hand down to mess with the small sun pendant stuck gently on the dulled silver chain hangly loosely off her throat. |

Faria looked up and focused when Tori spoke, discarding her thoughts. She smiled and nodded in agreement about the dorms being stuffy. "Yes, it is nice out here, much better air." She looked up at the sky and her eyes followed a couple birds fly out from the trees and out across the lake. Ah, that would be nice, wouldn't it? To fly... She looked back at Tori. "Though, it does get a bit damp in the mornings and slugs seem to like the outside walls of my tent. Not very pleasant when you try to get in and out, but I guess it's okay." Faria looked over to what Tori was fidgetting with. Pretty. She studied it for a moment before returnnig to look around at the lake. She loved it out here, the water looked so placid, calming her down herself. She made a small note to herself that she'd have to go swimming in it sometime. Without removing her gaze from the water, she attempted to lengthen their conversation. "So... Are you from around here? Japan I mean..." She faced the girl again, fixing her with her soft eyes, trying to be friendly. She could tell that, by her uniform on a day with no classes, Tori was a newer student. Not that wearing her uniform was bad or against the rules or anything, but just a bit different. Faria didn't want her to get the wrong impression about the school, only having gotten so many herself from past schools and she wanted to try to make the adjustment easier for Tori, unsure if she changed schools a whole lot or not. |

"Yes, it is nice out here, much better air." Tori laughed softly and nodded in agreement, still fiddling absent-mindedly with her necklace. A silence rested inbetween them, both oddly enough it wasn't uncomfortable. It was peaceful, comfortable. Her lilac orbs gazed out into the water, it was clerar but somehow still murky and she privatly wondered how clean it was, but it still was very pretty. Perhaps, as the day was already rising quickly in temperature, she could dive into it's cool depths and enjoy herself swimming. One of Tori's favorite things baout looking at water was you could look almost as three different layers in only one thing. First, the layer of water with waves and small rolls, protecting the underwater from the harshness of above. Then was underneathe it, where life thrived and it was almost anti-gravity. As long as your air was preserved you could spend a long time just flaotng in nothingness as if you didn't exist at all, which sounds scary but is sometimes just the relief someone needs. Of cours,e the reflectiosn short followed this; long, rolling hills that seemed to be in their own world, pretty trees that swam along the water and clouds that slowly waved and wriggled. "So... Are you from around here? Japan I mean..." Tori jumped a little, having been far in thought, yet gave Faria a big smile, looking at her happily. "Yeah, I'm from Japan. I come from this sort of isolated village north of here; its kind of far away. What about you?" |

Faria was a tad relieved that there was someone else at this school from Japan. So far she didn't think she'd met anyone from the same country as she. She nodded to Tori. "Yeah, I'm from Japan. It seems not many students are themselves though. It's interesting all the places you can hear about from them." She coughed a little bit. She suspected that a cold was coming on. She hated getting sick and got so rarely, but small brief colds seemed to happen a lot. She didn't mind them so much, except for the headaches that they brought. "Name any city in Honshu and chances are I've probably lived there... I've also lived for a short while on Hokaido and Kyushu, but really not for that long... maybe a month or so each." She shrugged. Her family had moved way too much when her mother was still alive... Even after her mother's death her father had moved once... maybe twice. She didn't really remember Hokaido and Kyushu though. |

"Yeah, I'm from Japan. It seems not many students are themselves though. It's interesting all the places you can hear about from them." Privatly, Tori wondered what types of places people could possibly come from in this school. Maybe different countries, but, as a wild, passing thought not unlike many other radical passing thoughts, maybe different planets, different dimensions. How interesting it would be to meet soemone not from Earth, but from another, distant, obscure planet. "Name any city in Honshu and chances are I've probably lived there... I've also lived for a short while on Hokaido and Kyushu, but really not for that long... maybe a month or so each." It seemed as though this girl moved alot. Secretly, Tori was jealous, for she rarly went anywhere but her home town. "Really? That's so interesting. I've only been to my town, Chokochoko, and that's in Honshu, but I lived in Okinowa for awhile, and thats it." She laughed. "Of couse, I suppose I am living here now." Her mind wandered to the idea of traveling to places far and wide, but she quickly brought herself back down to earth to continue conversation. "So you've lived in most of Honshu? I'm sure Tokyo and Kyoto, but have you ever lived in Nikko or Yokohama?" |

Faria nodded. "Yokohama I have for a little, but not in Nikko..." She plucked at the grass, tearing up the small green blades into tiny bits and releasing them into the slight breeze that always seemed to blow about the lake. Even if you couldn't feel it, it was still there... bits of grass could prove that well enough. Unlike Tori, Faria hated moving so much. Moving meant another run down appartment that she'd have to care for. New neighbors to deal with as soon as you got used to their fights and disturbances in the middle of the night, most of which Faria choose not to think about in too much detail. Moving meant a new school that wasn't friendly to new students like her. Moving meant her parents had gotten new jobs and it would be quite a while before they were situated and had enough money to even buy decent food. Faria shook her head, pushing the thoughts away once more. "We usually lived in larger cities. My parents were attracted to the darker slum areas like moths to flame." She raises a fistful of grass and let it go, watching the bits flutter and fall to the ground a few feet away, her attempt at a joke falling terribly flat. Her dislike for her family being uncovered a little more than she like to share and she became silent, wondering, and hoping, if maybe Tori hadn't caught it and that she thought it only a harmless failure at a jest. She looked up at Tori, somewhat trying to change the subject a bit. "Why Nikko and Yokohama? Family?" |

"Yokohama I have for a little, but not in Nikko..." Tori nodded, still listening, but staring out over the lake with almost no movement, double-tasking with the transfixed state she had because of the tons of gallons of moving water before them, and talking with Faria, who tone had dropped a little as if it was getting a little out of where she would have liked it to go. Her companion seemed to settle to deeper thoughts, and then ppushe dout of all of that and spoke again. "We usually lived in larger cities. My parents were attracted to the darker slum areas like moths to flame." Tori smiled lightly, but perhaps it would have been funnier if Faria didn't look like she was enjoying the subject too much, like it was getting a little closer than she would prefer small-talk with a near-stranger got. Tori was searching her mind despratly to think of a way to change the subject so this girl didn't get uncomfortable and wnader off, but Faria beat her to it. "Why Nikko and Yokohama? Family?" She nodded, but said, "Kind of. My real mother was last seen wandering the streets of Yokohama, but I've heard a lot of stuff from it's underground music scene and that's always interested me a lot. Some of my favorite bands arose from around there. It's sort of like, 'I need to go to Yokohama so I can look for my mom a little, but mostly so I can meet my favorite bands.'" Tori didn't want to admit that she was perfectly sure her true mother was dead, and had very little hope finding her in the big city she was last seen in ten years ago. "Oh, and Nikko because of it's culture. This friend I had when I lived in Chokochoko visited there, and she brought back all sorts of amulets from street vendors and pictures of their shrines, temples, and towers. I've always been very interested in that, but my town was sort of cut off rom even hints of the old ways, like traditions, you know? Our town had a temple, but my family neevr went there, even on Holidays." "Ah, sorry, I talk a lot sometimes," Tori said, sweatdropping nervously. |

Faria shook her head, actually glad that Tori talked more than just a few words and then retiring into her own thoughts. Faria wished she could do the same herself, but found her mind too strong a force to draw away from. "That's cool. I've never actually been to Nikko, but my family's gone through it before." She plucked a reasonably long blade of grass and pulled it through her fingers, like it was a ribbon or something. She watched it, only half paying attention to it's movements. She kind of wanted to ask about Tori's mother being in Yokohama, but the way she'd said 'real mother' led Faria to thinking it was probably a touche subject and she didn't want to prod. Instead she asked about Tori's other reason for wanting to go to Yokohama. "What bands? Like mainstream?" Faria was interested in music a lot herself, though she only listened to it. She really wanted to be able to play an instrument, but lessons were expensive and her art supplies already took up most of her extra money... She could live with her imagination and just dreaming about it, though. |

"A little. From what I know it's mostly underground, but maybe I just think that because I've never seen any music videos or heard kids from my town play 'em. Mostly I like the sort of electric rock and metal stuff, but I also like the 5.6.7.8's, Banana Erectors, Coquettish, Potshot, Peelander-Z, Nicotine, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, and the Pebbles, even if they aren't all from Yokohama. Coquettish is though, the band members were born and raised, I believe. They really got me into the underground scene around that area," as Tori had said this all pretty fast, she took a deep breath as her sentance finished and hoped that all of the bands she named were ones that Faria knew and detested. Laying out on the grass relaxedly, she bended a knee so it popped in the air and used it as a lift to bob her other shoed foot up and down, in a sort of rhythm that her fingers started drumming along to on the grass around her, while she melded into the long, thick, squishy blades. The morning dew had set out a pretty damp field surrounding the lake, but ti was drying as clouds formed high in the skies and sleepy studetns wandered dazedly from their house dorms. Above her where swirling blobs of shapes and depths that turne dinto anything she could imagine it to be, and subconciously, in her mind, while she waited for faria to reply, Tori was pointing out shapes to herself. Cats, dogs, trees, moutains, planes, buildings, stop signs, dragons, houses, cars, buses, penciles, ipods, computers, and what oddly enough looked like a half crocodile half worm swirling above her in the same four clouds that seemed to be gaping, giant mound free-floating miles and miles above the school. |

Faria thought to herself a moment before replying. "Actually, I've never heard of any of those groups... I think I've heard of Coquettish, but never actually listened to them." She half smiled to herself, now poking her fingers at the grass and soft earth, digging up a small patch of the weed-like plant. Just like she wasn't fond of living there, she wasn't too fond of Japan at all. Ever since she'd started learning the English language, she'd gotten more into American rock music, imagining that maybe she wasn't in Japan at all. Maybe somewhere in the US where people were said to be free to do anything they wanted. Where you could wear your shoes inside the house and could eat any type of food you wanted instead of what you were limited to here... "I do like the sort of electronic rock though... industrial sort of stuff. And trance. Can't live with out trance." She smiled again, mostly to herself. It was true, too. What would she do without music, without trance? Her escape from the world. She suddenly started to miss her music player which was locked away in her trunk in her tent. But she left it there, she was hanging with Tori, now. |

"Actually, I've never heard of any of those groups... I think I've heard of Coquettish, but never actually listened to them." Tori nodded with a smile and replied quickly, "Well, they're pretty unknown." She sat up into an cross-legged position and leaned back on bother arms, so she was still watching those giant white puff float and shift into different unimaginable shapes and object, so of which you can't even name, even if you can see it. "I do like the sort of electronic rock though... industrial sort of stuff. And trance. Can't live with out trance." "Oh, hell yes!" Tori said energetically, smiling brightly suddenly. She had someone shifted in a split ecodnd so she was attentivly facing Faria. "I love trance. There are a few good bands from Tokyo or Kyoto, but I've noticed most of the good industrial and electronic comes from abroad, mostly America, Germany and Aulstralia." She let out a small, silly laugh, and said, "No wonder you didn't know the bands I named before, msot of them are ska or punk or soul or pop." "Anyway, what bands do you like?" Tori asked, suddenly feeling as if she had spoken far too much, and didn't want to scare this girl off with mindless chatter that no one found appealing, amusing, or interesting. |

"Oh, there are a few ska and punk bands I like... but not so much soul or pop... heh." Faria smiled, Tori's sudden intrest startling her a bit, but making her feel happier that they had something in common. She nodded in agreement with what she said about music artists usually being in other countries. "Yeah, there's a lot of good stuff from America and a few Australian bands... but America has the best metal..." She sat there for a moment, thinking. She looked up at the clouds for a moment and then continued. "Though there are some really good orchestras in Japan... Ah." She laughed a little bit, her classical intrest popping out. She somewhat worried what Tori would think of that. She didn't think many rock fans got into classical. But she liked all the instruments, all the levels and things to focus on. She liked music like that because she focused more on listening to the notes and the instruments instead of thinking. She didn't like to think and music was her main getaway. Thinking she should probably switch the focus of the conversation back on rock, she thought of one of her favorite bands for a moment. She guessed they would be classified as Metal maybe? But their music was totally their own, unable to be really put into a categorie as specific as Metal, maybe just general rock...? "Have you ever heard of Cursive? They're one of my ultimate favorite bands. They're from America, I believe..." |
