As the two of them strolled along the path to the Suzaku dorms, Yumiko asked, "Since I don't know anyone in there, would you stay with me in the common room for a while?"

"Um, I don't see any problem with that. I don't think there's a curfew so I should be all right getting back." Keitaro answered. "Okay, sure." He gave her a quick smile that she returned joyfully.

"Thank you so much," she said as Kei rushed to open the door for her. She smiled shyly and giggled. "Such a gentleman."

"I do my best," he replied, blushing, and entered the room after her. Mizuhana hopped off of Kei's head where she had been comfortably nestled and squeezed through the door just before it closed.

Kei had never been inside the Suzaku dorms before, and he now regretted it. The expanse of the common room was a bit smaller than that of the Seiryuu house, but the myriad couches and poufs gave the room a comfy, leisured feel that the others didn't have.

Keitaro looked ahead of him to see Yumiko bounce onto one of the largest sofas in the room. It was a gigantic peach-colored mass of squishy cushions and pillows that looked increasingly inviting for Kei's tired body. She beckoned him closer with her finger and he happily obliged.

At once, he sunk into the couch beside Yumiko and grabbed an over-stuffed, fuzzy pink pillow and made himself comfortable. Mizuhana followed behind and curled herself up on Yumiko's lap.

"Looks like I'm not the only one who had a hard day today," said Kei as he gazed at the cat demon's lazy eyes. "You know, you don't have to stay awake any longer. I'll protect Yumiko-chan if anything goes wrong." He added with a smile. Mizuhana closed her eyes and fell asleep instantly.

As Mizuhana fell asleep in her lap, she smiled at the kitty and rubbed it's head. She sighed and closed her eyes for a second, then she opened them and looked at Kei, "You know what? I totally forgot what I wanted to talk about." She said plainly, then she giggled, "I guess I am pretty lame." She looked away and sighed, "Yeah, I'm a big baby... that's all." She looked back at him, "Is it right for a human to be in a school of metas? I mean, I can't even go to the regular classes."

She kicked off her shoes, revealing her girly white and pink swirly socks, and then lifted her right leg and proped it against the seat so her thigh was in front of her torso. Though, this didn't disturb Mizuhana because she had already been moved to the left leg, "I guess the only thing I can do if I get caught up in a fight is stay with someone who can protect me."

She smiled and looked at Kei, "I have a small feeling that you'll probably the one I go to, seeing as how you're the only one I know." She blushed, but tried to hide it, "Yeah... I feel safe with you."

"First of all," Keitaro replied, cuddling the fuzzy pillow close to his face (a weak attempt to hide his blushing cheeks), "you are most definitely not lame. And second, I'll have you know I didn't even realize I was a meta until a few weeks ago. I lived my whole life believing I was just your average guy, and then--" he cut himself off.

Looking down at his pillow, he continued. "Well, it's not like I have any crazy powers like some of the other people you've no doubt seen around the campus. I mean, there's not a whole lot I can do besides martial arts, but..." he looked back up at Yumiko and, by miracle, found the gall to say, "...but I'll do my best to protect you. I wouldn't want to lose someone like you."

Flashes of Kei's friend Teo filtered into his thoughts. He looked at the girl in front of him, but didn't see her. "You, one of the few people I've spoken to at this school, gotten to know, grown to like. After everything my friends have done for me, I would have to be a complete coward not to try and help them out..."

Before he knew it, Kei was digressing into a direction he most certainly did not want to turn to in the presence of Yumiko. But he let his emotions get the best of him, as always... "Even if I won't be able to do anything, I'd like to think that I could at least be there for him, help him. I can't just sit here and do nothing and let him..."

Keitaro's vision blurred and went out of focus as tears welled up in his eyes. He definitely hadn't expected the conversation to go the way it did. He didn't even remember what he had said, just that he couldn't get the image of Teo suffering and dying in agony out of his mind's eye.

How pathetic. Keitaro thought to himself. Now I've probably gone and scared her away. I'm the one who's lame. Not her.

Determined not to look her in the eye, he cuddled against the fluffy pink pillow in his arms once more and waited for the mortification he knew he would feel when Yumiko spoke.

Yumiko blushed and smiled, it was nice to know that someone wanted to take care of her. It was so cool for her, it was just like when she was little, everyone took care of her, "It doesn't ,atter if you don't have crazy powers, I don't have any powers at all!" She said, grinning from ear to ear, but when the tears came, her smile faded.

Yumiko stared at Kei, such emotion, such determination, such... such a soft-hearted guy! She knew that he was trying with all his being to hold back his tears. She almost felt like crying herself, it was so sad, he wanted to help so badly, though he thought so lowly of himself.

She scooted closer to Kei and set Mizuhana down where she was sitting originally. She gentley wrapped her arms around Kei and pulled him close. She didn't say anything, now was not the time. One hand rested on the side of his head while the other was wrapped around him and was resting on his shoulder. She rested her chin softly on the top of his head and closed her eyes, "I may not have powers to help you feel better..."

*Flashback*

Yumiko sat in her backyard, crying after her father's death. She was still in the black dress that she had worn that morning to the funeral. A meta boy with silver and brown hair came over to her and wrapped his arms around her. All she remembered was the tears stopping and the boy carrying her past her crying mother and into her bedroom, then he laid her down and left without a word. Later, she had found out that that boy couldn't talk and his power was to help people feel beter emotionally, but he had left a little bit after he had helped Yumiko.

*End flashback*

"But I can certainly try."

The atmosphere around him disappeared as Keitaro drifted back to the day he first met Teo Minamino...

It was a frigid, gloomy first day for Keitaro, and one filled with memories he could scarcly forget, but there in the murky June sky, was a ray of hope. Though it may have only been a tiny candle in a sea of darkness and fear, the light shining from a friend was enough to pull Kei out of the dreary grey world his curse had banished him to.

That is what Teo had done for him. Together, they sat in the placid serenity of the memorial, talking of joy, concern, of power, of courage, of love and of heartbreak... No one in Kei's life had ever openly listened to everything he had to say. Kei's confessions and fears turned out to be a theraputic means of making him feel better, and he had managed to make his first friend in the process.

Then again, at that point and time, Kei believed he had been admitted to an insane asylum and was in no way prepared for the onslaught mystery and power that crept around every corner of the school. But Teo had been there for him, despite everything else. Despite the horrid things Kei confessed to doing, Teo had been happy to become Kei's friend.

It was because of that alone, Keitaro felt his heart crumble to pieces in the Suzaku common room. The fact that his friend Teo was marked for death.

The tears were flowing freely as Kei wept in the arms of his new friend. He had fully expected her to withdraw and leave him to his misery when she saw what a wimp Kei was. But on the contrary, she had taken him into her arms and comforted him as he wept.

Her body felt warm and secure against him, and soon Kei's memories and the world around him faded into a deep and much-needed sleep.

Yumiko held Kei as he cried on her, at least he wasn't holding back for her, she really wanted to know what people were feeling so she could help. She ran her hand through his hair and smiled as she began to hum to him as he fell asleep in her arms. His body became limp and heavy against her, but it was fine. She carefully took the pillow out of his grasp and placed it on the back of the sofa, then she pulled Kei over to the other side of the couch so his head was on her lap and his feet were on the arm rest across from her. She stroked his hair softly and hummed some more for him.

A few minutes later, two obnoxious boys walked over to Yumiko and smiled lustly at her, "Hey babe, why don't you dump mister girly guy and come 'play' with us? I'm sure you'll have a lot more fun." The first one said, he was definately an american. The other boy smirked and knelt down to see Kei closer.

"He doesn't look like he's from Suzaku, I think he snuck in!" They both laughed and were about to poke Kei's forehead, but Yumiko's hand got in the way. She looked up from Kei and smiled sweetly at them.

"I'm sorry, but I don't play with apes. You see, I'm a human, while you too are lusterous beasts." She made a shooing motion with her hand, "Now, go run a long a find someone else to play with." The american boy stepped closer and got very close to her face.

Yumiko pushed his face away, then carefully moved out of under Kei's head, then laid him back down. She stood up straight and looked at the boys with a small smile, "Please go away, I don't like you, I never-EEKK!" The second boy grabbed her wrists and pulled her over to him then up against a wall, "Let go of me!" The american boy stepped closer as his friend held her to the wall.

"Now, now, don't resist us!" He put his finger against her lip, but when she bit it, he pulled away holding his bleeding finger, "You bitch!"

"Somebody help me! Get these perverts away from me!" She screamed as loud as she could.

Keitaro could feel the sun's warm summer rays against his skin as he meandered barefoot through the beach sand. In his left hand were his sandy sneakers, dripping with salty sea water, in the other was the soft hand of a girl he knew. Yes, shining like a fire beakon against the ocean's pearly waves was Yumiko.

The two of them skipped into the foamy sea and splashed each other playfully. Keitaro laughed as Yumiko smiled from ear to ear. It was a perfect moment.

Yumiko had slipped and fallen into the water and Kei was leaning over to help her up. It was then that he heard a faint screaming. He paused and looked around him, but the only other inhabitants on the beach island were the crabs and the seagulls. He heard it again, louder now. The voice was saying something.

"Somebody help me! Get these perverts away from me!" Kei heard it clearly now. The voice was that of Yumiko. All of a sudden, his dream's surroundings morphed away into the shapes of the Suzaku common room. He saw 2 starnge boys he didn't know, and as he shifted his eyes, he saw that one of them had Yumiko pinned against the wall.

No way am I gonna let something bad happen to her. He thought. I gotta do something! In a flurry of pillows, Keitaro leapt off of the couch and took hold of the back of the guys collar, pulling backwards with a bit more force than was necessary. The boy struggling in his grip made a loud gutteral noise and fell backwards onto the floor.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Kei shouted at the boy splayed across the floor. It was unlike him to curse like that, but given the circumstances... He walked past the boy on the floor and proceeded to punch his buddy in the face. Keitaro didn't flinch as he heard the greusome sound of bones cracking.

He strode over next to Yumiko and wrapped his arm around her waist protectively. If I ever see any one of you guys come near her again, you'll answer to me. Got it?"

The two perverts ran out of the room without another word. Keitaro looked down at Yumiko's worried and bewildered face. "Now is that the fifth or sixth time I've saved you?" He gave her a tired grin and saw her eyes sparkle as she smiled back at him.

Yumiko shut her eyes tight just before Kei grabbed the boy away from her and punched the other one in the face. She cringed at the sound of breaking bones and blushed when she was held against Kei as he yeled at the boys to get away. Trying to act the part, she put her hand on his chest so it was a bit more convincing to the boys that they were an item, even though they weren't... right?

"Now is that the fifth or sixth time I've saved you?"

After the boys were gone, she looked up at Kei and smiled, her eyes sparkling. She felt so safe with him. She stood on her tippy toes and kissed his cheek, then rested her head on his chest, "I bet it's the sixth." She closed her eyes, "I'm sorry that you had to be woken up... but, I guess you want to go back to your dorm, huh?"

Yumiko opened her eyes and looked into his, "It's late and I don't think the teachers would appriciate a student from a different house here over night."

If Kei's face had flushed red as he beat up the perverts, it was nothing compared to the color Kei turned when Yumiko had kissed him on the cheek. He wasn't sure wether to feel relieved that the guys were gone or supremely embarrassed at his own stupidity.

After all, he had thoroghly expected her to look at him with an eyebrow raised after his shameful display of tears. But Yumiko had been caring and understanding about the whole ordeal and now Kei was fairly certain he had taken a liking to the ginger-haired girl standing beside him.

"You're probably right about that," said Kei in regard to a boy sleeping in a girls dorm. "So... I guess I'd better be off then." With a smile, he hugged her closer to him for a second and then let go, backing away towards the door.

"Now don't get into any trouble while I'm gone or I'll have to resort to extreme methods." He added.

Yumiko wore a puzzled look on her face. "Extreme... methods? What do you mean?"

He laughed. "Well, hopefully we'll never have that happen, now will we? So I guess this is good bye for now, Yumiko-chan."

"Oh, hey! Wait! I owe you so much for saving me... um, so would you want to come with me for a ride on my motorcycle tomorrow morning? Maybe we can go and get some ice cream or something...?" She added hopefully.

Keitaro gave her a smile and said, "I'd love to."

Yumiko's smile brightened as he said yes, she was so happy. She ran after him as he backed toward the door, and then she hugged him tightly, "Great! Meet me back here tomorrow morning, ok?" She said, looking up at him.

Mizuhana jumped from the couch over to Yumiko and Kei, then jumped into kei hair and cuddled his head as she purred. Yumiko giggled, "Yup, Mizuhana really likes you!" She kisses Kei's cheek again, just for the heck of it, then let go of him and backed away a step as her face brightened, "Have a good night's sleep, ok? I don't want you falling asleep on the way."

"Have a good night's sleep, ok?" Said Yumiko, her face brightening. "I don't want you falling asleep on the way."

"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine," Kei replied, backing away to the door. He stopped as he came under the archway and gazed at Yumiko. "Have sweet dreams tonight, Yumiko-chan. For parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow."

Kei smiled at her again as he turned on his heel and closed the door behind him.

"Have sweet dreams tonight, Yumiko-chan. For parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow."

Yumiko smiled and waved as he left and closed the door, "Hm... 'Parting is such sweet sorrow'... I know I've heard that before!" She sat down on the couch with Mizuhana in her lap and began to think of who said it. She began thinking of all the books... well, manags, that she had read before. She closed her eyes, then she opened her eyes and snapped her fingers as she stood up, Mizuhana falling out of her lap, "I know! It's Fuyumi Soryo!" Her smile then disappeared, "Wait... that can't be right..." She sighed, "Oh well, time for bed!" She said cheerfully, then she looked at poor Mizuhana, who was laying on the floor where she was dropped, "You know, Mizuhana... Kei is really sweet, and he saved me a lot... do you think... we have a chance?" Mizuhana just whipped her tail a bit and began walking toward the girl rooms hall, Yumiko following quietly. She glanced back at the door and put her fingers to her lips.

Sweet dreams... Kei-chan.

*In Kei's room*

Keitaro opened the door and fumbled around for the footboard of his bed, too tired to change out of his pajamas. Though he managed to step on half of the clothes he owned (The slob. Too 'busy' to clean his room), he eventually found the soft, warm coziness that was his bed. He crawled into the covers and layed on his back, one hand under his pillow, eyes closed.

For how tired the boy was, he should have fallen asleep instantly. But something was hanging in the back of his mind, preventing Kei's much-desired rest. He lazily looked up at the dark ceiling and a blurry picture of someone formed in his mind's eye. He couldn't quite tell who it was at first, until he saw the golden brown hair and the kind eyes of Yumiko Tanaka.

He stared at her for a moment, finding a bit of joy in the loveliness of her face. But soon after, Yumi's golden locks faded to pitch black as she morphed into someone enirely different. Keitaro's brows furrowed as he gazed at his ex-girlfriend, Keiko.

Bewildered that her memory would come to him at a time like this, Keitaro tried to shake the girl out of his vision, but she still crept around the corners of his thoughts, making it even harder for him to fall asleep. Even as he closed his eyes, her sillhouette burned against his eyelids.

Why am I thinking about her? Were done. That ended the day I got on the train. But try as he might, Kei just couldn't stop thinking about all of the memories he shared with her. It was becoming painful. He recounted the message his father had relayed to him as he awoke the morining after the "incident": I’ve told that girlfriend of yours as well. She’s been too scared of you to even drop by the house... and then in the letter Otori-sensei had sent him afterwards: First and foremost, I want you to know that I have never believed that you went off the deep end, unlike my daughter who seems to think you’ve become the devil’s incarnation.

It seemed like half of him wanted to forget that he had ever met Keiko, but the other wanted very much to believe she was only misaken in her judgements and that they could someday get together again. Kei's mind flashed to Yumiko. But I really like her, too... I don't know if I would feel like I was cheating. Or wait. I'm almost positive Keiko has been with other guys after me, so why should I be afraid of meeting other people. It's not like we were that serious... He tried to deny their relationship, but deep in his heart, he knew that he had been in love with her.

He openedhis eyes again to stare at the ceiling. Yumiko appeared for him again, in all of her golden glory. As he looked at her, he made his decision. "That's it. No more Keiko. For now, it's only you, Yumi-chan. That's what I choose..." his voice trailed off as he finally fell asleep.

~*~*~*~*~*~

*The next morning in the Suzaku common room*

Keitaro walked out of the sunny, bright sunshine and into the common room to meet her. Noticing she wasn't there yet, he decided to take a seat on the same fluffy couch they had lounged on the night before. He smiled, remembering their time together.

He wore a pair of khaki cargo pants with an olive green polo and a brown jacket over the top. She said they would be going on a motorcycle ride, so Kei had dressed accordingly, though his knowledge of bikes was less than complete.

A few minuted passed by and Kei began to worry a little bit. Hmmm... I wonder where she is. It figures, I was too stupid to bring a watch...

Stupid may not have been the right word, though. Distracted, more like. He would scarcly admit to anyone that he had spent about an hour in front of the mirrir, trying to decide what outfit to wear on their first date (or so he liked to call it). And they say girls are self-conscious...

Yumiko walked down the stairs, her grace left behind as she tripped on every other stair that lead down to the common room. She wore a light blue, over the shoulders shirt and blue jeans, though, over the blue jeans were snap on leg protectors for when she rode her motorcycle, she almost looked like cowgirl. She finally made it down the stairs and looked at the sofa Kei was sitting on, "You're here already? It's 15 minutes before I expected you." She giggled and picked up Mizuhana who tugged at her pants leg for attention, "Though, getting an early start would be the best idea." She walked over to him and sat down next to him, then leaned on his shoulder, "Thanx again for protecting me last night." She then sat up and smiled, "So... shall we go?"

"Most definitely," Kei said, daringly taking her hand in his. He got up from the couch and pulled her up afterwards.

She giggled again. It was strange, their hands felt like two pieces of a puzzle fitting together the way they did. So much so that Kei had forgotten he was still holding hers. Even after they realised, neither showed any sign of letting go. They looked at each other for a moment, sharing a smile and a giggle. Then Yumiko stepped towards the door and pulled Kei with her.

"So where exactly is your motorcycle, Yumi-chan?" Kei asked as they stepped out onto the veranda.

Yumiko opened the door and walked out of it, then closed it after Kei, "It's in the parking lot of course." She smiled and squeezed his hand in hers, "This is going to be so much fun!" She walked quickly, taking in the school grounds as they went. Mizuhana was still in Yumiko's arms, sleeping soundly. She shivered slightly in the coolness of the morning, but she was sure that it would pass as the time passed.

Finally, they found themselves in the parking lot, looking for Yumiko's motorcycle. She looked from side to side, blushing, "Um... I know it was here somewhere..." She grinned sheepishly at Kei, "Um, I forgot where I parked." She admited, "It's silver, red, and blue, so it shouldn't be that hard to find... right?"

Kei rolled his eyes at her teasingly, then laughed and agreed to help her find it. "You could have parked it in the back parking lot. I think we should split up so it's easier to find. So," said Kei, pulling on his sunglasses, "you keep looking here. I'll go around to the back and see if it's over there."

"Okay, that's sounds good." Yumiko piped in as Kei walked away.

He waved his hand over his shoulder and yelled, "See you in a bit!"

As he turned the corner he mumbled to himself. "Silver, red, and blue. Silver, red, and blue. Shouldn't be that hard to find..." But alas, nothing is ever easy. Kei searched around the parking lot for about 10 minutes before giving up. It was simply nowhere to be seen. So Kei, deciding to take the scenic route, skirted the Seiryuu dorms and meandered along the school's fire road.

Just as he passed the first corner, a glint of silver caught his eye. He turned on his heel to find a shiny, silver, red, and blue motorcyle parked haphazardly on the curb. There was no mistake. It was Yumiko's bike. Keitaro laughed inwardly, how could she have forgotten where she parked when it's in such a weird place? She is a strange one, that Yumiko. But I don't think forgetfulness alone could stop what we've got going, he thought to himself, a grin blooming on his face.

Now his only problem was to get the bike over to Yumiko. Kei had never even touched a motorcycle, let alone driven one. So, thoughtlessly, he called out Yumiko's name, hoping she would hear him.

"YUMI-CHAN! I FOUND IT! COME OVER TO THE FIRE ROAD, IT'S OVER HERE!" He shouted to no avail. The only response he received was a weird look from a guy that was passing by. Embarrassed, Keitaro gave up and stepped up to the bike. Jeez, it looks so much bigger closer up. How in the world can someone like Yumi-chan drive this thing? A mental image of Yumiko scantily clad in a black leather riding suit, revving the engine sprung into his mind. Blushing, Kei snapped out of his daze.

"Um..." Keitaro put his hand on one of the handlebars and swung his right leg over the seat (which seemed unnaturally high above the ground at the time, for Kei almost toppled over the side). He stood his ground and held on to the other handlebar. In a way, he felt kind-of powerful perched atop the motorcycle; like someone cool, like the badasses teenage girls fawn over.

He looked down and discovered that she had left the key in the ignition as well. He shook his head, "she's lucky it wasn't stolen. I'll have to talk to her about that when I get back over there. Speaking of which..." he turned the key and started up the bike. "I should probably put this helmet on, too." He said, shoving it onto his head. It was a little on the small side, but it still fit considerably well. The buckle, on the other hand, proved to be more than Kei could handle. After a moment of struggling, he decided to tie it in a knot, ignoring the tangle of straps already nestled under his chin.

Keitaro eagerly twisted the throttle, expecting a triumphant roar to reverberate through the air, but instead, the bike suddenly jolted forward, nearly causing him to fall off the side. It coasted to a stop after a few seconds, then Keitaro, searching for a better way to balance, put his feet on the ground. Then, very slowly, Kei turned it forward, easing the bike ahead a few feet.

"That's it... give a little, get a little," he said to the bike, oblivious to the vacant stares of the few people passing by him. "That's it."

*10 minutes later*

"You got it, just keep going. Just a little further," he told the motorcycle as they rounded the last corner to the front parking lot.

As Kei scooted the bike forward, he bumped into something. When he looked up, he'd see Yumiko smiling down at him, the front wheel between her legs and her hands on the handle bars next to his, "You found my bike!" She cheered, "Where was it?" She grinned and giggled a bit, "You look really funny like that. I would expect a boy to ride it better than me, but you're really diffrent!" She was no laughing very hard as she leaned on the front of the bike. She finally stopped laughing and sighed, "So, need help with it?"

"So, need help with it?"

Now, completely embarrassed, Kei leaped off the bike and stood beside Yumiko, trying to hide his blushing cheeks. He tried taking off the helmet to conceal the cherry redness, but the knot he had tied the straps into didn't budge. After fumbling with it for a minute, he gave up and turned to face Yumiko.

"Yumi-chan, um... maybe we should start with the helmet..." he said, knocking on the side of it's shiny, laquered surface. As she moved to untangle the mess, he added "and why in the world did you decide to park it along the fire road? That's kind of a weird place to put a motorcycle-- not that I've ever driven one before, but still..."

His eyes shifted towards her as she concentrated on the knot. He gulped as a fit of embarrassment stopped around the region of his adam's apple. She was so close, he could have counted the freckles on her nose.

Yumiko consentrated as best should could to get the helmet off. She mumble a sorry everytime her delicate fingers brushed against his skin, but everytime she did, she felt more like doing it intentionally, "There." She pulled the helmet off and could help but blush at the fact that he was blushing too. She fixed his hair carefully from it's messy appearance from it's time in the helmet, "It was in the firelane?" Again, her cute, childish face twisted into a very confussed expression, "I don't... remember." She shook her head and smiled, "Well, that doesn't matter, you found it and that's all that matters!" She kissed him on the cheek and blushed, "Thank you for doing so." She put on her helmet and sat on the motorcycle, scooting forward so he had more room, "Well, get on." She handed him another helmet, "I'll tie it if you'd like."
