After that rather abrupt realisation that it was time for the Tournament, Eli had to go and participate. The problem was, he only had a few seconds to get there, and within two seconds of realising, he arrived, after the chant that teleported him to the place he was meant to be. Eli was almost exactly on time - by the clock beside him, twenty minutes to spare.

The line was small, and Eli knew what he was to do. Standing in line, he waited for the very familiar man behind the counter to finish with the last person in front of him - taking five minutes. Eli smiled as he approached the desk, the wizened old man smiling in return in recognizance of his champion.

“Eli!”

“Mister Rai. You…definitely know why I’m here, now fix me up. Problem is, I…sort of busted up God. Mind re-shaping it around me?” Eli said. Rai understood, and nodded, directing Eli to a side room. This room was the room where the new participants in the tournament received their powers - a device that scanned the psyche of the person and analysed something that would be excellent for them. Two years ago, Eli had come and been originally formed into the Rose Knight - a saber wielding warrior - but with the destruction of the Rose Armor, Eli had constructed his own upgrade - God Knight. This upgrade was even better for him, it seemed, and the machine that Eli and Rai stood in front of right now recorded the powers of all the fighters and could recall them when necessary.

And that’s what Eli did.

Standing on the platform, the twin circles began spinning, and it appeared like Eli was in a cocoon. A blinding green light later, and Eli stood in the fineries of his old suit - the white and blue of God Knight. He exercised his fingers for a moment - recalling just what it was like back in the glory days of being God Knight. He smiled, and removed the helmet, exhaling slowly.

“Mister Rai, consider your champion…returned. I think I can take this tournament pretty easily.”

Half an hour later, a crowd had filled the stadium outside, and Eli was sitting in the waiting room for division A. He was exhaling slowly, and looked around at his competitors. But one caught his eye, and his eyes widened at the sight of them.

“Ki…Kinai!?” Eli exclaimed, almost jumping up. Kinai was a close friend who participated in the tournament, and had every year since he had. The two had formed a good team last year, and this year, he hoped that they didn’t need to fight at all. She bore telekinetic powers - a very dangerous combination when dealing with a suit of armor. He removed his helmet and smiled at the girl

“Eli, is that you!? Oh my, you’ve changed! I knew I recognised that suit!” Kinai essentially leapt up and hugged him, having not seen each other for quite some time. They both lived on Earth, and they didn’t know where the other lived - a problem Eli was intent on rectifying.

“Yeah. I’ve done a bunch. Anyway, we’re gonna have some duels ahead of us, so…good luck, yeah?”

“Definitely. On the flip side, like always?” Kinai said, returning to her regularly cool, calm and collected self.

“Like always.”

Suddenly, the buzzer for the fighters to come to the ready room was sounded, and the thirty-two fighters went into the ready room.

“Welcome, Division One. Here’s today’s first round for you - just listen for your name. We’ll start with the Champion - Eli, you’ll be fighting Janus.”

“Fine, Mister Rai. Hurry this up, I want to get this over with.” Eli said boredly.

“…In so much of a rush are you, little boy…?” a slow, cold voice hissed from behind him. Eli immediately turned - and saw a two-headed man with black skin and red eyes. It wasn’t spooky at all to him, being used to this kind of thing - but it shocked some others. Being half-demon though, things like this were totally common in his mind, and it was this that allowed him to continue going, without being fazed by Janus. Eli’s eyes narrowed as he investigated Janus, then allowed the helmet to sink over his head, and heard the hiss of the sealing ring.

“Come on then, big bitch. We have a duel to do, don’t we?” Eli said coldly, and walked out, giving Kinai’s hand a quick squeeze as he passed her. It was a sort of ritual between the two, forged two years ago when they duelled one another for the final. Eli won, of course, but the two had formed a real bond because of it, and fought in the co-operative round last year and had really kicked some ass - the two together won the match the fastest that day with a cooperative attack. But now, once more, there was always the chance they’d fight.

The two combatants entered the field, and Eli waved to the crowd amidst masses of cheering in recognition of their champion. Last year, Eli had won narrowly - Tsurugi was a very tough opponent. And this year, it would be no different. But now, with a greater understanding of ki, he was going to be a lot better at using the attacks of the God Knight - for they were all ki-based.

“Welcome, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the 49th Ryoku Tournament! This year, we have the most gruelling set of challengers ever presented! In the first division, we have the top fighters of the last tournament, including our very own champion, God Knight!” At that, the crowd began cheering loudly - Eli’s exploits were legendary in the tournament.

“And for your first round, we have a treat! The champion, God Knight, versus Janus!”

The two combatants stood at opposite ends of the arena, and were readying themselves for the first round.

“Hey, Janus?” shouted Eli from across the ring.

“Yeah, ‘Champ’?” the two-headed man shouted back.

“…Don’t expect any quarter. I’m tempted to just rip you apart, right here, right now.”

“Hah!”

“Fighters ready…?” the announcer shouted. “Ready….FIGHT!”

And then the two raced at each other, Eli moving considerably faster, aided by bursts from the thrusters built into the binders and back. The two plasma sabers were drawn straight from the hip recharge racks, activating and forming two red beams stored in a special field. As soon as Janus was in range, Eli slashed at the two-headed man, severing one head and arm on the right with the fury of the slashes. Eli deactivated the sabers when he finished the fly-by, and stopped.

“You can surrender now, you know…prevent your death. I know you can survive with only one head.”

“You bloody bastard…”

The plasma was so hot, it stopped the bleeding. Eli, under the helmet and under the green eyes, smirked.

“Surrender.”

“…Fine.”

Janus raised two hands in the air, a sign that he was giving up.

“And the winner…GOD KNIGHT!” the announcer shouted, and Eli, being the gracious winner, escorted his opponent to the medical bay. He was just in the post-battle, and wasn’t allowed to kill under any circumstances…until the last round. Eli sat down on the benches inside the ready room, helping himself to a bottle of water, watching the net two fighters leave - Kinai and a guy named Korvis. Eli reached out towards Kinai, and once more, their fingers brushed. It was like a comfort zone thing - the other was always there to help. Eli turned his head to the screen and watched the impending duel - Kinai coming out victorious by slamming the man down repeatedly onto his back before finishing him off with a kick to the solar plexus.

As she returned, she took a seat next to Eli.

“Hah, we made it. Just like us.” Eli said with a grin as he noted Mister Rai walking past.

“Yo, Mister Rai? Can we be on a team again? We have a special treat in mind for the audience.”

“…I like the sound of that. As long as you know what you’re doing - you have a few hours.”

“…Perfect, time to practise. Come on Kinai; we have work to do.”

The two stood and walked off into the training hall, knowing there they had relative distance to practise.

“Now, Eli, what were you bluffing about?” Kinai asked. She didn’t have any prior knowledge about his plan - so what was he up to?

“Right, practise this. Lift me up into the air when I say go, straight out.”

Eli moved over, and took a punching shield, putting it at a random spot on the floor.

“But before I do…Let’s get this right. GOD DASH!” Eli screamed.

And…nothing.

“GOD DASH!” Eli screamed again. Still, nothing.

“Eli…Why isn’t God Dash working?” Kinai asked. When something wasn’t working for Eli, something was definitely wrong. Last time, all he’d needed to do was just shout a simple phrase, and what he needed to happen did. But what was wrong…?

“Eli…Channel ki. Kiai is useful. There’s probably an unlock phrase…”

“…You think?”

“…Go for it.”

Eli closed his eyes, standing perfectly still, just focusing on his internal energy. The youki and reiki within were strong, undoubtedly. Eli felt it within him - and accepted it.

“The Wings of God carry me forth, bringing me closer to my true destiny - GOD FIELD DASH!”

The binders on the suit split into their usual two binders and centre red section hexagon, and the six engines - two on the back and one on each split binder - flared more violently than possible with the aid of Eli‘s ki, sending Eli almost crashing into the wall if not for him turning off the ki supply to the six engines.

“Hell yeah!” Eli said before returning to Kinai’s side. “You’re bloody awesome, babe!” Eli said, resisting the urge to kiss her. He was damn lucky to have someone like her beside him, to give him the advice he needed to get through things - it had been like that at every tournament.

“Right, now…you ready?”

“You bet.”

Eli stood next to Kinai, who nodded her ready. Eli secured his helmet, to be safe.

“Go.”

Eli suddenly felt himself lift up - and Eli knew that was the cue.

“The Wings of God carry me forth, bringing me closer to my true destiny - GOD FIELD DASH!” Eli screamed, as soon as he reached his desired height, breaking free of Kinai’s grip and flying forth, knee first, at the pad, landing and causing a break in the floor as he did so. Eli had cut the ki energy and thus the battery fuel almost half a second before he hit the ground, and stood when he did.

“Booyah. Now, we have that one down. Now I want to practise one more thing - Take everything you can throw and throw it at me.”

“…Sure.”

Kinai crossed to the other side of the room, taking the punching shield with her. Eli stood where he landed, readying his fists to hit whatever came his way. One after the other, shields came flying, and Eli did his darnedest to block, kick or punch everything that came his way - and that he did. With every kick and punch, he brought back memories of using this and the Rose Armor, and those memories were inspiring - and extremely helpful. Not only the construction of God, but every time Eli used it - and the deluge of destruction he rained upon his enemies.

“Eli, Kinai, it’s time.” came the voice of the elderly Mister Rai, and the two nodded, leaving their messes where they were. They had a fight to win, and together, they would. Gently, their hands brushed again, the sign that they were both ready.

“We can do this, Kinai…together.” Eli whispered as they passed the fourteen others that had made it through to this round. They and another pair walked out to the stadium, and they waited on their side.

“Welcome to the co-operative round of the tournament! This round, we see God Knight and Kinai, last tournament’s Doubles Champions, versus two old enemies - Kaze and Tsurugi!”

“What!? Kaze AND Tsurugi!? Shit!”

Eli was aghast. What was this, hell? They couldn’t be back, they just couldn’t! Eli had almost killed Tsurugi - so how could he be back? It was…impossible! Eli closed his eyes.

“Kinai, change of plans…We’ve gotta go crazy. Look, just pin them down...” Eli said. Kaze was a master of the air, and if he were to get into his element, he’d be screwed. The best he could hope for was to cut off limbs. Kaze’s weakness was that he needed his hands - and the same was with Tsurugi, the master of swords. Eli knew that if he could beat Kaze first, this would be easier - Kaze could do innumerable things with wind.

“Fighters, ready?”

Eli braced himself - he needed to use the God Field Dash to even get close enough in time. He drew both of his plasma sabers as Tsurugi drew his swords.

“Ready…GO!”

By the time the announcer yelled go, Eli had already ignited his engines - and the God Field Dash, moving as fast as his ki would let him towards his enemies - of which Kaze was being pinned to the ground. Eli flew up, skimming the ground as the move dictated, and sliced off both of Kaze’s hands with a circular sweep, thankfully missing his torso.

Eli stopped at the edge of the ring, and turned to look for Tsurugi - who was already over at Kinai.

“Fuck!” Eli shouted, and flew over there, not caring about using God Field Dash. He didn’t even bother trying anything else - he just had to save Kinai. If he didn’t? Something was definitely wrong with him, and that was bad. He was moving as fast as he could - and he threw one saber at Tsurugi’s turned back - but not in time. One sword pierced her shoulder, and the other her lower torso, dropping the girl - right as Eli’s saber pierced Tsurugi’s lower torso, felling the man too.

“You bastard, hurting Kinai…”

Eli was furious. He took his saber out of Tsurugi and knelt down beside Kinai.

“Kinai, you alright…?” Eli asked quietly, removing his helmet.

“…Fine...Ugh!” Kinai was in serious pain.

“Bloody hell! Ref, call this off! None of these people are in ANY condition to fight!”

“…The winner is Eli and Kinai…”

People were stunned. Eli was known for being merciless - why this change? What had Kinai done to warrant this kind of behavior?

“Come on, Kinai..” Eli murmured before hefting the girl’s body in two arms, the helmet lopsided on his head. He walked her through the complex and to the medical ward, where he left her on the bed. He stayed there for a few minutes, before the medical crew ushered him out. Outside, Mister Rai was waiting.

“Eli, that was noble.” the old man said quietly.

“It was the right thing to do. After all - what would be the point of continuing a fight with combatants that were in no condition to fight?”

“Good point. And before you ask…? I modified your armor. I removed the God Sword ability altogether, knowing your skill with a sword, and I made the abilities more ki-based. Look, I should teach you how to use the God Finger now, I guess…You know where your room is - Miss Kinai is in the opposite room.”

“Hurry up, Rai. I need to get ready.”

“Right, right. Come on, then - we need to train this one. It takes a lot of practise…and you and Miss Kinai have your party to go to.”

Eli and Rai both walked to the training room, and Eli stood with his hands at his sides and his legs shoulder-width apart. He needed to master this technique - and quickly.

“The phrase is ‘This hand of mine glows with an awesome power - its burning grip tells me to defeat you!’. And this time? You can’t just ‘use it’ - you’ll see why.”

“…Right.”

Eli focused his ki into his right hand, and watched the God Slasher fall over his hand, the two yellow bars popping up. He heard the binders split behind him, and he could hear the humming ring. His right hand was glowing red, and was ready to perform the move.

“This hand of mine glows with an awesome power! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you! GOD FINGER!”

Eli glided forward, and noticed Rai holding a pad and extending it. His fingers touched, and then they all pressed up, including his palm - and the stream of kiai burned through and caused a sort of mini-explosion - the pad burning up, Rai dropping it as it did so.

“Holy…hell…” Eli said. That was more tiring than he thought! He was puffing for air! It was odd - he didn’t expect that to happen. He felt he was ready - and he would be.

“Thank you, Mister Rai…again.”

Eli walked out, undressing from the armor and storing it in his room before leaving, already wearing his white yukata-robe. The party was always good, and he was in for more than one surprise - aside from the extremely stunning Kinai, waiting for him, but one person there.

…It was Yun.

“YUN!?” Eli shouted. So -this- is where he was!

“…Eli.”

“Man…This will be good.”

Eli sat down, and sat there quietly. He barely spoke, still too shocked for words.

“Look…I’m gone, guys. I’m bushed..” Eli said, and left brusquely. Kinai followed, and put a hand on his shoulder. Normally, if someone did that, Eli would have turned around and gutted them with his claws, but he recognised the hand.

“Are you alright, Eli…?”

“No! Yun left -me-. How should I act?”

“…I don’t know.”

“Look, I’m going to sleep, and I’m going to wake up tomorrow and crush Yun. I hope I face him in the final round - so I can crush his face with the God Finger.”

“…You don’t like him, do you?”

“No, I do not. There are eight of us left - I have a good chance of winning by beating Yun in the last round. And if I do manage that? Well…”

Eli closed the door behind him the second he got there, Kinai leaning on it, worried about him. Something was wrong with Eli, and she needed to know what.

Ten hours later, the second day began. Eli rose, donned his armor, and walked out to the ready room. Everyone was already there, and Rai was there, waiting on Eli.

“Right, now we’re all here, I’ll explain the new change. This year…is a Battle Royale. All eight of you at once, duelling. Winner takes the prize, and anyone can die here.”

“…Wow. I won’t need to do much, really.” Eli murmured, but nodded. Everyone was thinking the same - and this would be a mess. Outside, the announcer could be heard discussing the Battle Royale, and Rai motioned for them all to leave. This would be bloody…

“And now, the combatants! God Knight, Yun, Kinai, Tesla, Vines, Blob, Strings and Chaos!”

Everyone stood in a corner or on a side of the square ring, Yun opposite Eli. This would be interesting - Would Eli come out on top after all? It seemed that everyone was giving the evils to the person opposite them…

“GO!” the announcer shouted, and seven of the combatants rushed at each other. Eli was the only one not to - and nobody noticed that was fighting.

A bloody death duel ensued - Yun, with his flaming sword, hacked both Vines and Blob to pieces, while Kinai slammed Strings into a wall. Tesla had Chaos on the ground and out, meaning it was already down to four within twenty seconds. It was then that Eli chose to unsheath his plasma sabers and charged at Tesla, sweeping at him with two slashes, taking his neck and waistline, cleaving him into three.

Yun dealt the biggest blow to Eli - His flame sword pierced Kinai through the heart, and Eli didn’t notice until tis too late.

“…Yun, you bastard, you killed Kinai! I fucking hate you!”

Eli stopped, and faced Yun down, and screamed at the top of his lungs before steadying himself and opening the binders.

“The Wings of God carry me forth, bringing me closer to my true destiny - GOD FIELD DASH!” Eli shouted, and charged, Eli’s two sabers slashing at Yun. Yun parried both of them with the flaming blade, and the two executed the same death duel they once danced - except this time, they were going to kill each other. Yun was a traitor in Eli’s eyes, and Eli was an immature, conceited fool that needed to die in Yun’s eyes.

Step left…slash! Parry and counter! Move with the enemy, and take every shot you can!

Every bit of advice Yun had given Eli was replaying in his head - meaning they two were equal - but not for long. Eli was going to try something rather brash. His swords came across and out in a slashing motion - and back in over Yun’s shoulders - which failed horribly, and left him open. Yun stepped back and parried both shoulder attacks, and kicked forward at Eli, sending him flying and knocking the helmet off. Yun raised his sword to stab through Eli - but Eli countered explosively - a thrust from the binders and a quick kick sent Yun stumbling back. Eli took the sabers up again and continued to press his attack, stepping out to throw the right saber, which Yun deflected away.

“Come on, Eli! I’m going to win!”

“SHUT UP YOU TRAITOROUS BASTARD!” Eli screamed, and let his anger take over again.

“THE WINGS OF GOD CARRY ME FORTH, BRINGING ME CLOSER TO MY TRUE DESTINY! GOD FIELD DAAASH!” Eli screamed, the binders flaring up and sending Eli fly towards Yun in a burst of unnaturally red flame, and Eli placed his hand out as he charged. The God Slasher slid forward as Eli poured ki into his hand, and the hand began glowing red.

“And now, Yun! YOU DIE!” Eli screamed, his face bent into a gruesome snarl.

“THIS HAND OF MINE GLOWS WITH AN AWESOME POWER! ITS BURNING GRIP TELLS ME TO DEFEAT YOU! GOD FINGEEEEEEEER!” Eli yelled, and rammed his hand into Yun’s unknowing face, burning the face apart and causing his body to make a quasi-explosion. Eli dropped the body, and shut off both the God Field Dash and God Finger, breathing extremely heavily due to using both specials at once.

“…It’s over! The winner is GOD KNIGHT!” the announcer screamed and Eli stepped off the platform, going to the same room he had for two years beforehand. Eli, as usual, placed his hand on the ball, and Eli knew that his wishes would come true - Not only would his interest in females be rekindled, but he would have some parts to upgrade God Knight with when it was needed. He walked out of the arena, taking the helmet and draping a tattered brown cloak, taken from Tesla, and made his way back to the portal room, to vanish from Ryoku once more…

“Kinai…I’m sorry.” was the last thing he said before stepping through the portal. He’d left her for dead…He’d been selfish. But, no more…It was over. He needed to retire…unless something pressing happened. Who knew? Time would tell - and the six seconds that had passed in the real world would tell…
