I am the Red Dragon.

The only thing Vain could recall during the entire rest of the night from Rin's party was the colour of the marble staircase as she gazed down at it, feeling the mahogany railing as she went to her room in his glorious mansion. She threw herself onto the cushionedy bed, dress and all, not caring anymore what anyone would say. She was exhausted from the night, empty in the heart and in the mind. The woman wasn't able to concentrate on a thing except for the fact that she had made so many mistakes in her life. All there was left to do now was, yes, cry.

She did the typical crying deal: turned over on her side, buried her face into the pillow (makeup and all) and sobbed her heart out until it was all done. Rin hadn't bothered her, possibly from the fact that he had witnessed her so distraght and had other things to do. It was in the early hours of the morning before Vain actually got up, showered, changed, and felt better (though still with puffy eyes).

The dark-haired woman walked down the hallway, out of her room to the other wing where her brother's room was and knocked on the door. He wasn't at work today because of the party. Perhaps he had gotten up early to work on paperwork. Regardless, his voice resounded from within.

"Enter."

Vain turned the brass door handle and stepped into the room quietly. Rin was gazing down at papers, signing them and then folding them into envelopes. He glanced up, pulling down his glasses from his matching green eyes and smiling genuinely.

"Good morning."

Vain smiled back, nodding. "Good morning, Rin."

She walked up to his desk and sat in one of the soft velvet chairs in front of it. Her hands twisted with one another, trying to find the right words to say. It was peculiar for her to, but she knew that the words would be right if she took the time to think.

"Is there something you need? You seem hesitant," the young man said, setting down his paper and ruffling his slicked black hair. He looked at his sister expectantly.

Vain took a deep breath before speaking. "Rin...remember what mother used to say? That we should do something right, or not do it at all. And that whatever we start, we should see it to the end? Well.."

She stood up and started walking, pacing in front of his desk. "...look, I've made a lot of bad choices in my life...mistakes...things I regret every waking moment. I know I've done you wrong, for giving up on you when I should've been there to save you, but I made a promise to a man. I started a life with him, and I'm not going to just end it now. I've torn it apart and attempted to glue it back together in some places, but it takes time...and precision. Things I don't have right now."

Rin continued to listen patiently as she spoke. Vain stopped and turned to him, smiling sadly. "Time was taken away from us. I wish I could spend more of it with you, but I can't. I want to let you know...that once my debt is repaid, I intend to live my life and let you live yours."

She walked around and hugged the man tightly, the young man that would always be a stranger to her but closer than any stranger could be. "I love you. You are my brother, and I will always be here for you. I will stay with you as long as it is necessary to clear you of your debt, but when this is over, I lead my own life, and you're always welcome to be a part of it, even if I'm not with you."

He was silent for a moment, only hugging her in return, but eventually he pulled away, tucking the tie in his shirt and lifting his head up. His voice was quieter than usual, but sincere nonetheless. "I know you've given up more than enough for me....to ask anymore would be selfish. I only want to give you things in return...without you I wouldn't be here."

Rin smiled, placing a hand to her cheek and meeting her eyes. "It wasn't your fault, Vain. There was nothing you could do to save me. You were young. I wouldn't expect anyone your age to be able to do something like that, regardless of it you are my older sister or not."

"But..."

"No, Vain. I don't blame you for what has happened. I just...need your help now...and hey, of course I'll be with you in the future! We've found each other, I can't possibly just leave you now. You didn't have to come back to me but you did. You sacrficed a lot, more than I could ever imagine, and for that, I can never express the amount of gratitude I feel."

Perhaps it seemed unreal, but to the two of them embracing silently, Vain and Rin both knew that their lives were going to change--maybe this time it would be for the better.
