The night was smooth and velvet, blanketing the November sky with tiny trickles of stars and the illusions of other stellar monuments. The AHS campus was deserted for the night life of Tokyo this Friday night, and Juliette held in her mouth the only source of light for miles: a withering cigarette she habitually ashed over the cold concrete roof. She was alone and wrapped in a snug sweater which she huggled closer to her as the windy evening progressed into an even depper blackness. Juliette's blue eyes were blank, glassy with apathy.

She had never been so alone in her life.

Juliette had recently re-enrolled in Anime High School after an extensive stint in the hospital, caring for her ailing mother. The past few weeks had drained Juliette of any care for herself she had had. The life she had been living, dressed daily in a sterile robe complete with hair net and latex gloves had made her forgotten the pride in appearance she had sometimes posessed for herself. This was imminent even now that she was out of the white-walled penitentary that smelled so prevalently of lysol and sickness. Her hair, still short and choppy, was hardly combed. Her clothes were wrinkled and bright violet bags bloomed under her withering eyes. She was, in a word, gone.

Juliette nursed her nicotine habit, a new trick she picked up while anxiously awaiting news of her mother's condition in the hospital parking lot. Taking an excessive puff, she exhaled the cancerous smog into the air, puncturing it's purity.

"Wei."

The voice was somewhat quiet and subdued, as though the speaker was not sure how Juliette would react to it. That was also why he'd spoken in Chinese; to let her know who it was. He was a figure from her past, someone she'd met during her first days at AHS. The two had had one blissful night, one night where they'd let themselves run wild, and ever since then his own life had been half of what it could have felt like. The driving, the deals, the money...without Juliette's company it seemed hollow.

Wong Sun, or "Sonny", as he was called, stood tentatively away from her. He had caught a glimpse of her while he was walking through the campus, and had followed her up here. But he could tell she was different. And so he'd maintained his distance, unsure of what she thought of him. Clearly tragedy had marked her several times over, he could see grief and pain written in every nuance of her beautiful face.

"I haven't seen you in a long while, mei."

Juliette's stagnant form quaked with surprise as the familiar and foreign words of a man she had never forgotten reached her ears through the dense darkness of the night. Sonny. The man who had showed her compassion, adventure, and infautuation all in the first few hours she had resided at Anime High School. Juliette felt the warmth of his presence stir in her heart, but her lips stayed pursed and silent; human emotion had become a dull thrill compared to the destructive activites she had partook in during that tulmutulous period in her life. She finished her cigarette and flicked it over the edge, wanting so badly to drop down with it.

Juliette breathed in the fresh air, it resting like syrup in her lungs. She stood, drowning in a sweater two-sizes too large that she had picked up at a thrift store. She turned to face Sonny, searching his eyes for memories of better times. They were there, but dilluded with time and tragedy.

"Sonny..." Was all she could muster.

A breeze blew through and Juliette's mop of hair flew everywhere, marring the deep night with strands of gold. She swallowed and her leg began shaking...She once again needed an escape from the reality that was her mother's illness.

"I'm...I'm sorry I ran off like that..."
