I was walking with the ghost

Nearly an hour they had zipped through two cities, stopping at signs, lights, and obeying the law. But now, the dirt road of the country had told Gojairu to let loose, and she had listened. They now flew down the dirt path of the old country road, the wind blowing Gojairu's newly grown out blond hair. She felt good, she felt great, better than she had in years. She was on a most awesome date to...date, she had snacks, she had her friend Rinji, and she had just...a good feeling. "Theres the shrine, hold on to those snacks tight, girlie!" She said and turned onto the hill. It was easier this time now that it wasn't a torrential downpour of rain. They slid easily down the hill and through the paddy, reaching the shrine, Gojairu leaned the bike against the outer wall and looked up, the stars shining bright above them. "Beautiful.." Gojairu sighed, smiling. |

"This rocks!" Rinji exclaimed, happily hopping off the bike and nabbing the snackies in her hands. She was soooo excited to be out there again. Anywhere in nature was fine by her! She could feel the ground beneath her feet through her shoes and was loving it. Stepping into the shrine and putting the snacks in a corner, she quickly unlaced her Converses and decided to put those carefully down since she was inside of a religious complex. Next were the socks! Stepping back outside, Rinji squealed, rejoicing in the fresh air. It was basically the most amazing thing in the world. "This is wonderful, Gojairu! Thanks so much for taking me out here again!" Before anyone could stop the spirited young woman she flopped on the moist ground and gazed up at the sky. |

"No problem hun, I enjoy it out here as well." Gojairu said smiling, and sat down on the small porch of the shrine, taking a deep breath in. She had become so different since the first time she was here. It had become sort of a spiritual hang out for her. Gojairu set to taking her shoes and socks off as well, laying back on the wood floor, the air smelled so nice tonight. Was Gojairu wrong all this time about liking Rinji? it seemed like they worked just fine as friends, and she felt a lot less shy around her now. Maybe something had just felt odd before...maybe it was the newfound attention... "So Rin...we'd probably make a lousy couple huh?" She asked chuckling. |

"I don't know," Rinji said, almost absentmindedly. She realized that she had responded instinctively, though, and quickly turned her actual attention to her friend. "You know, I think it would be different. I mean, I like us the way we are now. We're really good friends, and I think that if time decides that we can be really good together as more than that, then that's that! But I say we take our time." She looked at the young woman before her sitting there and smiled. "You know, as the best friend I get to say my honest opinion and hope that you'll forgive me for hurting your feeling if I do, but I was just wondering and thinking, maybe the reasons why your relationships before kinda didn't work out is because you might've rushed around in them. You know? Or things were forced upon you, but maybe if you take your time this time, it'll be alright." Rinji got up and walked over to Gojairu, giving her a big hug. "Just a thought you know...probably one of many tonight, but yeah..." |

"Guess your right, Rin...maybe I do rush stuff too much." She said sighing and hugging Rinji back. "My first relationship was with Trent and...well we know how that went..." She said, closing her eyes, trying not to remember. "And with Riko...well..she wanted too much that I couldn't give her I guess...and there were others, girls I don't even remember...guess I was a bit of a skankypanky." She said chuckling to herself. "I suppose when I used to go with my dad on tour, he would meet up with groupies and the like....he never really got attached to them though. I guess I just figured that was normal for people to do, how relationships went, but it was different, so much different. Theres so much you have to do and think about in a relationship, and the way I was..I couldn't handle that, I don't know if I could now but...we'll see I guess." She opened her eyes and looked at Rinji, the girl still confused her, but for tonight she wouldn't think about it. "Thank you for being honest with me, Rin, means a lot." She said ruffling the girls purple hair. |

"Hey! That's what friends are for," Rinji replied, the coined phrase ringing into the silence of the fields. She smiled at her friend and nodded though. "I can kinda see where you're coming from. I mean, I never really had groupies, obviously, but I switched around a lot school-wise. My father kept on changing on me because I would always get into fights and stuff, mostly. I tried homeschooling, but...I don't know. I just didn't get along with people and I think that's because I never really had the chance to start a good foundation." She took a pause to break out some munchies from no where and started to crunch on them. They were SOOOO tastey. "But you know, I think it was good for me to come here and do that. It's a fun time and it takes a lot of practice to be able to handle other people. Patience, really. But in the end, it can be so rewarding. I mean, look at us! We're great friends now, don'tcha think?" Rinji, with nori-maki in her mouth turned to look at Gojairu and grinned. She was absolutely ridiculous, but also starving already. The girl could eat a whole semi-truck full of food and still want another semi ten minutes later. Honestly! |

Gojairu covered her face to muffle her laughter. "You? Get into fights?! I'm hard pressed to believe that." She said giggling uncontrollably. After a bit she got herself under control and dug into the snacks, opening a pack of shrimcrisps. "Mmm, love these things." She said popping one into her mouth and munching on it. Her pocket started chiming with one of those annoying cellphone rings. "Hm...thats dad's ring." Gojairu murfled, crumbs flying out of her mouth. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell, flipping it open. "Whats hoppin, pops?" She said, another cascade of crumbs flying towards her companion. There was a long silence, Gojairus face gradually sank from smile to frown. "...Your what?" |

Rinji had been munching cheerily, agreeing whole-heartedly to the shrimpscrisps. They were pretty much delicious. She was almost through her whole bag of nori-maki, which wasn't that much anyway, when Gojairu's cell phone rang. Since she hadn't heard it before, the shape-shifter was a little surprised, but settled down on the ground some more and just listened to her voice. It was only a sentence later though that Rinji sat up. Something was wrong. Even in the darkening light she could tell that Gojairu's face was contorted into a frown, a worried look. What was the matter? thinking it best not to say anything really, Rinji just scooted closer to her friend in an attempt to let her know non-verbally that she was here. Rinji hoped that it wasn't anything terrible. If it was concerning Gojairu's father, though, then it might be. Rinji hugged her friend before trying to act more casual, thinking that it might help to stay calm. She munched on another nori-maki, but didn't really taste it, which was both disappointing and terrifying. |

As Rinji cuddled up to Gojairu, it became easier to hear Nakaori's voice on the other line. "You heard me, hun..." His voice said in a strained and nervous tone "I'm getting remarried." "Wha...bu...NO! No you cant!" Gojairu shouted "Uh...last I remember, it was legally acceptable to do so...and I wanted you to know so that you could be ready for it.." "Yeah, great job you did of that, dad. How could I be ready for this? When did you even meet her!?" "At a concert a few weeks before I came to see you...she was the one who encouraged me to get in contact with you again...she's great...she-" "Shut up dad, shut up! I don't care! Why didn't you tell me when you came over here?!" "You had a lot on your plate, Ru...what with your girlfriend problems and quitting smoking and all." "She isnt my damn girlfriend dad! You should have- I cant even...WHAT ABOUT MOM? Would she be happy your married again? Huh?!" "Kurumi is dead, Ru...your mother died...you know that." "SO THAT MAKES IT OKAY TO JUST GO BONE ANY FUCKING GROUPIE YOU WANT?!" "I never said that. I said that I am marrying her Ru." "So you dont care about her at a-" "Dont you dare finish that sentence Gojairu Asai!" Nakaori snapped, stopping Gojairu in her tracks. "I have accepted your mothers death after all these years, yes I am sad. Yes I miss her. Yes I care...but I need to move on, Ru...you do too. And frankly I find your display childish...I really thought you could at least be a little happy for me...I think you owe me atleast that much." "...I..." Gojairu stopped and shut her phone, collapsing onto Rinji in a sobbing heap. "Why do I cry whenever I'm here?..." She whimpered. |

Rinji knew that more than anything at the moment, Gojairu didn't need to hear her opinion really, more so than just her comfort, so the girl did just that. She took her friend into her arms and held her close so that when the sobbing would subside, she could hear her heart beating. Rinji ran her fingers through Gojairu's hair at a measured speed, smiling softly as she did and speaking quietly. "Shhhhh....." she hushed. She let the breeze take her purple hair and blew some of it out of her eyes before shifting to a more comfortable position without disturbing Gojairu and hugging her more. "Shhhh. Listen...hmm? Listen real close...do you hear it? That's my heart beating." Rinji let the night air take some of the sounds and the silence was not really a silence at all, but an array of noises, a medley of song from animals. "No matter what happens to us," the woman explained, continuing her comfort treatment, "no matter how many times we get hurt or we fall in love, there will always be a part that lives on. Now, you can hear that the heart beating is a sign of that, but even when my heart stops beating, I will still remain. Those we love never leave us. They live in our own beating hearts, in our minds, in our memories, in our very souls. We ARE them. We live their dreams. We conquer their problems. We rise to the challenges that they were presented with, that they present us, and we are victorious." Rinji hugged Gojairu close and tried to hush some more of her sobbing. She thought it best that she heard her opinion now. "Being remarried isn't saying that you're pushing the memory of someone forever away. It's not that you're going to get rid of them forever. Being remarried to realizing, hoping, and trusting, that the person you lost cares more for your own happiness than theirs. I am sure that your mother will realize that your father must move on. She does not want you both to linger and drown in sorrow. She wants to see you laugh, see you smile, see you find joy in the passion of life, not wallow in self-pity." Looking to the sky, Rinji couldn't help but just stare for a moment in awe. The stars always surprised her and here out in the country they were so clear and bright. "We're all part of one another...just remember that, Gojairu. And I'll always be with you." |

"Shhhh. Listen...hmm? Listen real close...do you hear it? That's my heart beating." Gojairu sniffled and closed her eyes, listening to it, along with what Rinji had to say. "B-but...why didn't he s-say anything? I don't even know this woman...she could be terrible to him.." She said, then Rinji continued and she listened, again surprised at the girls ability to seem wise beyond her years. She sighed, hugging Rinji close "Thank you Rin..." Gojairu said sitting up and wiping her eyes, seeing Rinji was looking up at the sky, Gojairu did the same. She looked for all the consolations she knew, big dipper, orion's belt..that was about it. "But...now what do I say to him?..." Gojairu sighed "I just feel stupid and bratty now...I guess...maybe I wanted to re-establish a place in his life...maybe its too late to ask for that. I hurt him really badly...its only natural he'd want someone in his life thats not going to..." She looked down, unable to continue. She put her hand over her face, trying to stop herself from crying again. |

"Hey, listen here," Rinji said in a gentle voice, placing her palms to Gojairu's hands. She smiled reassuringly. "Your father loves you, and wants you to be a part of his life no matter what. There's no helping that. You will always be family. I'm sure that whatever he decides and whoever this woman is, he's thought long and hard about it, especially when it comes to how it will effect you. You're his shining star, Gojairu! Despite all the things you might've done or how you've treated him before, he knows that you're growing up and learning from your mistakes. I mean, look at what you did back there at the diner! That was fantastic! You finally stood up for yourself and TO yourself! Even if you don't want to admit it just yet, you forgave a part of yourself that you never thought you could. You apologized! And you can do it again." Rinji picked up Gojairu's phone and took her friend's hand, placing the electronic device within her palm. "I believe in you. Just call your dad and say you're sorry. You /are/ happy for him, aren't you? Tell him that you overreacted, but you realize that it was difficult for him to tell you about her and that you want to know more. Just tell him how you feel about everything. Maybe you're uncomfortable with it, that's okay. Just tell him that though. Tell him what you thought he did wrong and tell him what you know you did wrong and apologize. This is the beginning of fixing a relationship." The young purple-haired woman nodded to the phone. "You're stuck with one another as family forever. You can't escape it. So you should make it the best you can." |

Gojairu looked up at Rinji, gosh this girl was something else. The ability to seem wise beyond her years was something Gojairu envied. "Alright...I will." She said, sheepishly opening her phone and dialing his number. For every ring of the phone, Gojairu's urge to hang up and run away increased..but not this time. "Hello?" Her fathers voice answered. "H-hey papa..." "Hello Ru..what have I done now?" "I...I'm sorry papa...I just...I guess I'm jealous and afraid I may not be number one anymore..." "Oh Gojairu...of course your always gonna be number one...but on the other hand this woman does mean a lot to me, Ru...but I don't want you to have to compete with her because I love you and your always going to be the miracle that comes on the saddest day of my life." "I made it the saddest day." "You didnt, Ru...it is not your fault..." "Anyway dad...I am happy for you.....so when's the wedding?" "Dunno yet...we still have to consult to see when her and Chie are free?" "Chie?..." "Oh....uhm...Your...new stepsister.." "...what?..you...god dammit dad, say these things!" "I know! I know I'm sorry...I...well...you'll meet her soon enough at the wedding...and also she's...coming to your school." "...You!..ugh...never mind, I am happy for you, and I'm sorry I yelled at you...I'll talk to you later." "Love you, Ru." "Love you papa." Click. Gojairu sighed deeply, relaxing back onto Rinji. "Jeez...that man, completely useless..." She grumbled, of course she didnt mean it. "So, was that alright?" |

As she listened to their conversation, the young woman couldn't help but realize that they had a certain dynamic that was quite similar to her own in many ways, but slightly different. With her father, it had been unruly at first, a lot of fighting and not a lot of agreement, but now Rinji was at a point in her life where she really appreciated having him there and understood the struggle he had gone through. It had been tough, but he loved it all the same. As Gojairu finished her conversation, the shapeshifted nabbed up a bag of snackies and began muching again. "Yes," Rinji replied, smiling adamantly. "That was great. I'm quite proud of you! You kept your cool." Throwing an arm around Gojairu and the other still holding the bag, Rinji grinned. "Come on! Let's start a fire or something. It's gonna get a smidge chilly out here." She entered back into the temple and put her bag of snacks reluctantly on the ground in order to drag over a metal tin. Stepping back outside, she searched around for some dried brush or twigs and managed to grab only a few. Rinji brought them back inside, and futilly trying to blow bangs out of her eyes as she bent over, the girl placed the brush in the tin. "Alright! Now we need to start it!" |

Gojairu smiled to herself, it was nice...having someone be proud of you. She was still mad at him, of course, but for now she'd let it slide. Chie huh...wonder what she'd be like.. "Hey, you can use this." She said, pulling out a lighter and handing it to Rinji. That lighter had been with her awhile...since...well, since the last time she smoked, which had been the last time she'd been here...weird. Perhaps it was that Hitsuzen she heard about...probly not. |

"Whoo! I thought you'd have a lighter," Rinji replied, taking the device and being careful as she started it. "I mean, I hope that you haven't used it, but it's great to have one anyway." She took up some of the dry brush and tried to kindle it with the little flame, blowing a bit, and finally sighing in relief as it started. Throwing the bunch into the tin, she watched the flame glow more and more and couldn't help but be pleased with herself. Afterall, living so many years outside! It would be a shame if she couldn't start a fire! "What do you wanna do now?" Rinji asked, nabbing up her bag of yummies and basically finishing them off. She crunched the rest of the nor-maki and then proceeded to remove a bag of gummies from her pocket. "We could just chill out or talk or sleep or tell ghosty stories!" The young woman laughed, smiling at her friend and really thinking about the time they spent together. It was nice. Real nice. She wouldn't trade it for anything. Gojairu really was the only friend she had nowadays, except for Vain, but she was always busy with her own life, especially with Lavieon. The only reason Rinji felt part of her life still was BECAUSE of Lavieon. She didn't mind babysitting the little angle all the time, but s he would much rather have a girl's night out with Vain. Oh well. |

"Nah I aint been using it." She said, a little exasperatedly. Of course she had quit smoking. Gojairu thought of some things they could do, admittedly some of them were not altogether acceptable in modern Japanese society. "Dunno, guess I'm just happy being here with ya." She said smiling, she wished she had brought her guitar. She could play something, or be interesting in a way she felt she could be. "Sorry, my weepy drama probly gets old, huh?" |

"Psh, are you kiddin' me?" Rinji exclaimed, giving her friend an almost reproving glance. "I think it's interesting, probably more interesting than it should be. Actually, it shouldn't be any of my business, but being the nosy git I am..." The young woman laughed, blowing purple bangs out of her eyes and sighing. She decided that maybe it was time to really go on an adventure. She didn't know why, or how, but she knew it inside. There was something greater. Perhaps some unseen star had bonked her on the head, or maybe it was just Gojairu's breakthrough that really inspired her. Either way, Rinji was feeling bound for something big, something exciting. "Gahhh! I wanna DO something!" Rinji said, jumping around and flailing. She cried up to the sky. "WHAT DO I DOOOOOOOOO?????" Taking a deep breath of cool air, she looked back at Gojairu. "All my life I've just gone around school here and there and nothing has really happened to me! I don't know why I have this power, I don't know why. I mean, normally people who are adopted wanna go look for their parents, but I don't really feel the need to, but at the same time, it would be an adventure. I mean, maybe I'll be disappointed by what happens, what I find out, but I think it's time to break out! I mean, seriously! There's so much out there and I've just been sitting here for the past how many years just being BORING!" Rinji looked back up at the sky. "I've looked and just haven't looked hard enough. I'm ready for an adventure of my own. I wanna know why I have tihs power! What it's made for! What I can do!" Turning to Gojairu again, the fiery young woman nodded, "So I need to do something, but I don't know what." |

Gojairu understood her completely, she herself would be graduating soon and was much in need of something exciting to do...something that they'd remember.. Gojiaru looked over at Rinji, "Road trip ..." She said smiling, "I bet dads gonna have the wedding in another part of Japan so we could probably drive out, I could rent a car or something, we could make a week of it or something..." She said looking back at the sky. "Just thought it might be nice to have you there with me to see this new family of mine..." Her smile turned sad for a moment "I...I dont want you to think I'm using you as a crutch or anything. I just...I think better when your here..." She said taking Rinji's hand lightly. "So...If you want, I'd like very much to have an exciting trip with you." |

"UGH! GOJAIRU!!!! THAT'S PERFECT!" Rinji nearly screamed into the night in utter excitement. She grabbed the girl's hand and took it from a simple and gentle hold to a violent shake. She jumped up and down and up and down some more and then spun Gojairu around with her in a circle. "ROAD TRIP!!!! I've always wanted to go on one. Sure, I've seen them in movies and stuff, and all that crazy junk happens! WHOOOoeee!! I hope it happens to us! Like, how the family has a terrible dynamic and then they meet a lot of crazy people and eat at diners and stay in scary motels!" Rinji was all too happy about this situation. Flinging her purple bangs from her bright eyes, which reflected the stars in the sky in streaks, Rinji danced about. "And of course I'd love to see your new family! Geeze, I'll be there to support you any old time! I'm glad you think so much of me!" Spinning around some more, then getting a little dizzy and falling over, Rinji laughed almost uncontrollably. "I'd love to! Let's do it! A super exciting road trip! And you can play your guitar too!" |

Gojairu smiled as Rinji spun her in a circle, "Careful now, your handling damaged goods." She said, but it did no good, the girl was too excited, and hell, she was too! It had been so long since she had hit the road looking for thrills and adventure. Who could blame the girls for spinning and laughing like idiots. "Alright girlie, before we head out we gotta go to bed first!" Gojairu said giggling "I'll call my dad in the morning and tell him to hammer out plans. God knows he's not on top of things..." She said chuckling some more, gosh, what an idiot she was tonight. She let go of Rinji and collapsed on her back, closing her eyes. "Its odd...but I don't know if I want the spinning to stop..." She whispered, putting her arms behind her and relaxing, the world around her turning this way and that. |

"Totally understandable," Rinji exclaimed as she fell next to Gojairu onto the soft ground. She closed her eyes as well and folded her hands on her stomach, taking a deep breath of night air. "Let's definitely do that! In the morning we can start our adventure." Yawning, a reflex to the idea of sleep, Rinji just smiled. She was so much like any other creature: just eating and sleeping! Bringing a hand up to her face, she tucked the bangs away and then opened her eyes when she felt that they would not rattle around. The stars were stiller again and she was happy for that. Rinji felt they danced enough just when she was sitting still. "Hey, Gojairu! You think that we're the only ones around here, or...do you think there are other things out there?" |

Gojairu was excited, really excited, she had this dumb grin on her face that nearly reflected the light of the moon. Think of all the things that could happen, to be on the road again..eeee she was so excited! She chuckled as Rinji asked her question, "I'd altogether not think about it, since that if there were, they would be a little upset that were here...not, to bed with you little excitable girl." She said, and with that, flung herself onto Rinji and rested her head on her friends chest, closing her eyes. |

Rinji thought not to dwell on it as well, and let the feelings slowly subside, shifting back to a little corner of her mind that she reserved for the more philosophical questions she could dwell on later. Sighing with a tiredness that she hadn't realized until the moment Gojairu mentioned sleeping, she nodded and closed her eyes slowly. Once that happened, there was no turning back!!! The young purple-haired girl had no way of changing the circumstances, but didn't want to. She knew that it was really a good relationship between the two of them. Nothing needed to really be said, and she felt completely comfortable with Gojairu snuggling that way. Her friend knew that she was just friends, and that they were going to be okay. Rinji wasn't afraid any longer that there would be some crossing of the lines. She wanted to go travelling and it was just about going to be the best time ever. She fell asleep quickly and the next time she woke up, it was to the birds chirping int he distance and the pale canary yellow rays of wonderful sunshine creeping over the hills of the country. The morning was chilly, and so it was a bit difficult to get up because she was so still, so Rinji just settled for lying there and blinking her eyes to adjust to the light of the changing morning sky. |

The night birds sang in the night as Gojairu opened one eye and peered at the sleeping Rinji. She smiled, this girl had done a lot for her in the last few months, she shifted her arms around Rinji, pulling her close, she leaned in and kissed her gently on the forehead. "Thank you...I really dont deserve you..." She whispered more to herself than anyone , and then smiled wide "But I think I'll keep you anyway." She said and supressed a small giggle, jeez, when had she gotten so girly? She then lay her head down again on Rinji's chest and went to sleep. Morning...chirping birds...the wind in the grass....the footsteps of angry locals approaching. Wait... "On your feet, ladies." A man growled, standing at the entryway "This shrine is not some place to hold a sleep over. We humbly request you leave quickly before we have you escorted." "Nmm...five more minutes dad...fuck school anyway..." Gojairu mumbled, at the moment asleep and oblivious. |

"Er....Gojairu....get up!" Rinji exclaimed, startling and shaking her best friend awake. She stood up and brushed the dew and dirt from her clothing before nodding and bowing deeply to the people in front of her. "I am sorry! We didn't realize. We'll get all of our stuff and be on our way." Nabbing the crazy sleeping girl by the arm, the young woman dragged her away to take up their backpacks. She hoped that the locals wouldn't get too vicious, you know, pitch forks and all! That would be terrible, considering that Rinji hadn't had anything to eat yet and transforming for a battle on an empty stomache was not a very fun thing to do. "We'd better skee-daddle!" the purple-haired woman exclaimed, nodding to the bike. "Are you ready to rock and roll? Maybe we can get some breakfast at a diner somewhere along the road!" |

Gojairu looked at the man, narrowing her eyes, she hated people telling her what to do...but...it wouldn't be cool to start up a scene this early in the morning. "Fine...lets roll..." Gojairu grumbled, walking over and tossing her leg over the her bike, starting it up. She waited for Rinji to join her and there were off. Up the hill and down the dusty road, the dew shining under the light of the rising sun as the wind woke Gojairu up little by little. "Well well...you ready to eat? I sure as hell am...then we'll start planning our rockin outting." Gojairu said grinning, the excitement welling up in her, making her body warm. |

"Hecks yeah!" Rinji said excitedly. The wind was great! Not too cool but not a warm balmy breeze either. She loved being out in the fields during the morning. The sun rising was just about one of the most beautiful things. Giving Gojairu a hug, she laughed as she continued, "Am I ever NOT hungry? Honestly!" Talking over the wind and watching as the trees flew by, the purple-haired girl yawned and tried to think. She did not know this area very well, but in her experience with travelling, there was always some place out in the boonies where there would be food! Perhaps a bar with the latest news from different big cities around it or a diner. That was it! There had to be a diner somewhere. "Why don't we drive for a while and see if we can find some place to stop for on the side of the road for breakfast! I bet there's somewhere near here, or relatively near," Rinji called over the wind even though Gojairu was right next to her. She wasn't yelling, just talking loudly. "If not, then I still have some snacks in my bag!" |
