She awoke to darkness. Not darkness as you and I know it - shapes distorted by a lack of light - but utter, perpetual darkness. No light, no objects. Nothing. Black as far as the eye could see, that is if it could see. Even the ground beneath her was black. Not that it could be called 'ground' for the word implies dirt, rock, grass - something of the earth. And even though her hands touched it her mind could not even fathom a word for what lay beneath her.

She closed her eyes; unaware that they were even open, as there was nothing to see where she was. It was almost maddening; she was certain that if she spent any amount of time here she would certainly go mad. She pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes as if the motion would make everything right again. She would wake up in her dorm room back at school. The pressure caused pinpoints of light to burst under her eyelids. Light which was welcomed even if it was technically cause by pain.

The light grew brighter and she stopped pressing. The light, however, did not fade; in fact it grew brighter. Instinctually she opened her eyes. Before her - though she knew not how far seeing as there was nothing from which to measure distance - stood around white light. She reached out, surprised when her hand hit the circle, it was glass. The light faded, revealing a living room. Chairs, table, lamps... just a generic living room with not a soul in sight.

Hand outstretched she began to walk towards the room, but even as her legs carried her further and further she did not seem to get any closer to the white lit room in the distance. She had thought she'd been dreaming, she had to be and yet this felt all too real. The last thing she recalled was reaching towards the full length mirror in her room, with the intent of practicing with her powers some more.

Where am I? She thought suddenly, panic bubbling inside her once she reached the conclusion that she was indeed wide awake.

"Your powers have let you travel into our world." The disembodied voice was light, whispering all around her.

"What world?" she asked, trying not to think too much about the fact that she was speaking to a disembodied voice in the middle of a vasty nothingness.

"There are many different realities, all based upon the choices we make. For every time you chose heads in this reality there is another reality where you did not. Making the number of realities infinite. These realities run parallel to one another and very rarely intersect.

This place you see before you is simply a different dimension of your reality. Simple to cross into if you have the knowledge, with its own parallels in the different realities."

"Right then... how did I get here?" All right, she was having a conversation with a disembodied voice in the middle of a vasty nothingness, time to face facts.

"You are able to travel here because you are a mirror witch, you use them to see. All though your particular talent is quite different than anything we possess." The voice seemed almost proud at this, like a teacher who had been surpassed by their student.

"We are seers, spirits drawn to this world after death. We see the world and retain what we see, some of us can even glimpse the futures... you seem to be able to tap into this world of ours, and this knowledge we have accumulated in ways that have never been done."

"That's all very interesting," She said quickly, staring at the light of the room rather than the dark around her. "But how do I get out?" What seemed to be a shiny door replaced the light, this time when she walked towards it; it did not retreat from her.

"The same way you got here. Focus on where you want to go."

She wanted to be home, back in her room, back to her reality and the lives that filled it, rather than this cold world of memory. She reached out and touched the cool surface, and immediately felt as though she was being sucked though a very small straw.

Yet the world she entered was not the world she had left. Raine did not understand, hadn't they said that the other realities did not cross, that you could not travel to them. Where was she? Somehow she knew she was not on her Earth. Everything here was dark, twisted, not quite right to the world she belonged. There was something terribly sinister about this place. Raine turned around, trying to find the mirror she must have travelled through. Although when she turned all she found was a dark foreboding forest.

Raine was beginning to think nothing could go right in her life, it just seemed to be one bad thing after another. She did know one thing, she couldn't stay where she was, so she began to head out into the forest that lay before her. She noticed one thing right off as she began to walk, as her arms moved in and out of her line of sight... she had been changed. Again, it would seem. Hadn't she been through enough being turned into a chimera, now this new world had to change her as well? She began to run, blindly, somewhere she could hear the sound of running water and hoped that it was clear enough to see her reflection in.

Whipping past gnarled tree after gnarled tree and nearly tripping over a few Raine found the source of the water... only it wasn't running. It was frozen, it looked like polished glass, clear as crystal and yet she could hear the sound of running water as if below the ice it was still moving. But running water didn't freeze... The surface reflected her clearly, she could see pale white skin, straight long black hair, the only thing that remained of her chimera form were the purple eyes she had received, everything was back to human, although her hair colour was certainly different. This world seemed to have changed her to fit its image of a human. She certainly fit better in this dark world with this appearance then she would have as she had been.

"Well aren't we a sight for sore eyes?" the voice came from a tree to her left but when she looked there was no one there. "I thought you would never arrive." Bright green eyes materialized out of thin air, followed by the bushy tail of a fox that quite resembled the one she had had not hours before. The rest of it's body came into view slowly and it stared, grinning at her.

"What are you?" Raine asked, getting slowly to her feet. "No, wait, answer this first: where am I?"

"Why, wonderland of course... or at least a version of it. We like to think of it as the one and only but we all know it's really not true." she stared at the creature in disbelief, it gave a little sigh and continued on with its explanation. "When science first came into being, mythological creatures and magic needed somewhere else to go, between gods and science there was no place for the magics of the world. We came here, created our own little pocket in the world. We used the seers world as a bridge and craved ourselves a space 'in between'"

"'In Between', what does that mean?"

"That is something that; thinking too hard about, causes madness, well known fact. And since I don't want to drive you mad just yet, I think we'll leave that for now. As for what I am... I am your familiar, your guide, your confidant... your pal, your amigo. In short, I am here to make sure this world doesn't kill you until you can find your way out."

"um... Thank you?" Raine stared at the creature, the light was poor but she could see clear enough that it looked like a fox one might encounter back in her reality. Her reality? Those were words she thought she'd never think together... "So why Wonderland then. Some fairy's a really big Lewis Carroll fan or somethin'?"

The tiny creature took on a sad look and sighed once more. "You could say that. It wasn't always this way. At one time this was a world of light and laughter. Maybe a bit more on the mischievous side but certainly a mite easier to look at then it is now. Only there were some, many in fact, that were not happy with having to leave our home, one sprite in particular began to stir up a bit of a rebellion. In the end, those that weren't killed were transformed, having gone quite mad over the years, her quest to take back your world was long forgotten. Why bother when she had this one at her mercy to form as she wished? She turned this world into her own version of Wonderland, twisted and dark as her grip on sanity loosened more and more. Most of the creatures who came here in the beginning are either dead or living out life as some sort of maudlin story book character. Chess pawns ,and hatters, card guards and her ruling over it all as a demented Queen of Hearts."

"Ooohh Kay then, I need to get out of here. I think that's top priority, yeah?" Being stuck in a land ruled by a psychotic with supernatural powers was not something Raine wanted to go through. Again. The quicker she got out the better. "So then... what do I call you anyway?"

"I do not have a name." It didn't sound particularly sad over this, more perplexed as to why it had to have a name in the first place.

"Fox it is then. Tell me Fox, how to I get out of this lovely place you have here?"

"That's simple." For a moment it looked as though it would not explain; that it expected her to suddenly know, seeing as it was so very simple. "You have to defeat the Queen. She's stolen the mirror that brought you here."

"... But ... but... why can't I just use another mirror, surely there must be another in this place that I can use to travel with." She didn't want to have to fight, she didn't think she could with the meager powers she possessed.

"That mirror is the only link to your world. While there are many left open in your world to ours; they are only one way. Those who fall through do not last long once they realize they cannot return home."

"Cheery. Which way, then, Fox? Where do I start?"

"We're in the Woods right now, we need to see the Hatter, he holds the way to the Palace. But between here and there, lay many dangers. Beware that nothing in this place makes much sense. Logic does not always work here, or at least not your logic. It seems perfectly logical to those who live here."

"Great.", Raine was by far a logical thinker so hearing that logic would not work in this dismal place did not exactly please her.

The world around her was vast, frozen and foreboding. And yet though there was no sunlight and everything was covered in frost and ice Raine was not cold, even in the summery dress she found herself wearing. Follow the yellow brick road., she found herself thinking, Wait… wrong movie. Although at the moment she felt a little more like Dorothy than Alice, not that she could really say why she felt that way for given the situation she found herself in it made no sense. But perhaps that was just the sort of thing that came with being in such a place, even your own thoughts no longer followed a logical pattern?

"Hmmm... Pretty! Ack!! It's cold! Brr."

The young girl frowned. She appeared to only be fourteen years old. Her hair long, and purplish-blue, with dark sapphire eyes that sheltered her charismatic and fiery spirit. Her bare fingers have been exploring the icy trees, which pinched her skin with its cold frost.

"Stupid tree. You will be destroyed!!!!"

In a flash of golden-white light, the branch was severed, slowly slipping free from the trunk, then all at once meeting the ground. That sure warmed the girl up inside. It was hard to keep a cheery disposition in a wasteland like this--it felt like the warmth of the sun hadn't hit her at all since she happened upon this place. While half of her worried, the other half was amused and intrigued by this place that was so different from home. Was it a dream? No....well, maybe...

It had only been a couple hours since her arrival, and she had spent that time aimlessly wandering. On one hand, the girl of youth was searching for a way to escape, but more so she was satisfying her own curiosity. Like... running ice? Who has heard of such a thing? Probably Russian. Russia had always been on top of the ball in science. Was she in Russia!?

Then, suddenly, she heard voices! Words that she could understand--though barely make out. Now, it hadn't crossed her mind that these voices could be of evil people or something supernatural. Who cares about logic when you're in a place like this anyways?

Picking up her pace, she passed by the trees hastily, trying to catch the voices before they went on the move. And then she happened upon them....

"Ohaiyo!" Her name was Suzuki Fumiko--but little did she know, she was not from our dimension....

"Ohaiyo!"

Raine stopped in her tracks, someone was calling out... in Japanese. It was a tossup which surprised her more; that someone was there or that that someone was speaking Japanese. She hadn't really been aware of it but now that she thought about it she and Fox had been speaking in English. She found it strange that she hadn't noticed, that she'd been able to slip so easily back into a language she used so rarely now.

She turned.

And then she stared.

And stared some more.

"Fox?" her eyes did not waiver from the girl in front of her as she posed the question to her companion. He (she, it... honestly she wasn't all that sure but his voice was certainly male-like.) chose this moment to jump up onto her shoulder and only then did she feel the cold of the area as it transferred from his reddish fur to her exposed skin. She took a moment from her shock to wonder why Fox's fur was cold and she was not. And then quickly returned to her shock.

"Yes." he stared as well, mimicking his master even in tone.

"There's a girl... just there. Looking an awful bit like a person I know." her voice came out in a staged whisper and it was quite possible that the girl resembling Suzuki could hear their conversation. And possibly understand if she knew any English.

"I do see to whom you refer." He turned his bright green eyes towards her, studying her profile. Those eyes were the only thing un-fox-like about Fox, other than those eyes he looked no different from any other fox pup you might encounter, he was cute really though the eyes and the whole talking thing were a little strange. But then again that wasn't so out of place here it seemed, so maybe Fox was normal and she was the strange one.

Raine decided that it was probably best if she stopped staring at this younger Suzuki she found herself faced with. It was probably best if she talked to her, right? Talking made sense.

"Ohaiyo..." Her tone was still the same bewildering tone she had used throughout her conversation with Fox, she cleared her throat and tried again in Japanese. "Um... Hi." She moved closer. "I'm Raine... this is Fox." She introduced them, using the English word for Fox instead of the Japanese 'kitsune'. It was, after all, his name... in a way. "And you ...are ..."

This place was getting stranger by the minute. It made no sense to her how Suzuki, a younger Suzuki at that, could even be here.

While there are many left open in your world to ours; they are only one way. Those who fall through do not last long once they realize they cannot return home.

Of course! But wait... that didn't explain a younger Suzuki at all. So really she hadn't answered her question. What good were answers to the wrong questions! Obviously this world she found herself in was far more complicated than she first gave it credit for. Which in turn made her wonder what else was in store for her along the way. This was the first time that Raine even considered that Wonderland might do her in before she even found the Queen. If this place could deliver something as odd as a 'young Suzuki' then what other strange and unexplainable things awaited her? What sorts of perils? She was suddenly more frightened now then she had been moments before. Before she only had to worry about finding a Hatter and getting to the Queen, she hadn't really taken Fox seriously when he'd warned about dangers between this and that. Now suddenly a world all ready upside-down seems to tilt further still.

He moved almost with a liquid grace, flowing around the blow, his sword in both hands as it slid into the armpit of the armored beast. Damn the witch and her projects. They were always newly made, always with the mindless ferocity, and always so fun to kill. The blade twisted with its owner, and the monster's arm fell off in tune with its great roar of pain. Raven black hair whipped around Jack's face as he squared off again. The bone white blade flickered through the air, massive in size now, and neatly cut off the creature's head. The monster of nightmares fell to the ground, black bile oozing out of its cuts and torn limbs. More flowed freely about the blade, and it began to shrink, returning into the pendant like sliver of steel. "Witch, send me another."

The woman moved from the cover, smiling weakly. She wasn't what many expected, and while she was the cumulation of magical knowledge, she was a little girl. Light brown hair, the color of worn leather flowed around her paper white skin. Emerald eyes stared off into the distance. Her latest body had been re-born from the ashes of the old hag she was, and her new name... bah, he never liked the new names. Jack cleaned off the burrs from the scratches that the tiger like demon had given him, as Lily jumped up onto a chair beside him, beginning to treat the wounds to his forehead. The man had grappled with the beast, and a headbutt had stunned it long enough for him to grab his sword.

"You really need to be more careful about this sort of thing. I'm brewing more salve than I do stew these days."

She sighed, and he had to shake his head, which earned him a slap and a tut. The grandmother was still there, and since his body never really aged, the younger girl had been his lover when she came of age, then a mother as she left it, then his younger sister again. It had happened... how many times now? He lost count after the fifth cycle. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and he felt her kiss his temple. Lily dropped down, walking across to look outside. The monster had faded, the life-essence already gathering inside of the gem she always kept around her creation's necks.

Jack sighed, looking out the other way as he watched the gazer. It was her scrying dish, sure, but it wasn't like they weren't used to sharing everything. He gulped as he saw the white-hot central rune. "Lily? We got visitors." He got up, and looked at the runes around the edge of the dish. He quickly scrawled them down. Jack grabbed his cloak, then his helm. Ivy came back into the room. Jack explained. "Magic. Very big magic. Something came." She nodded, then looked at the scrawled runes. She shrugged, and began chanting, the tattooed runes on her arms glowing as she ripped open the portal to the destination.

"Right then. Look after yourself. I don't want to have to make another body for you. Again."

He smiled, and stepped into the portal, before reappearing in a frost covered field. His cloak billowed as his black armor sucked in warmth, the simple curved plates betraying the difficulty in making them. He settled the helm on his head, and fished the pendant from his collar as the branch exploded. He walked forward, and then into the clearing beside Raine and Fox. Then the girl appeared. Jack stepped in and looked from one face to the other, his raven hair swinging to a halt as his face's passive eyes swept over them, burning gold in color. One was a magical entity, the other two were human.

"Right. Can I help you ladies at all?"

(sorry it's short, I want to get things on the go)

When she found herself here Raine had not thought that she would find anyone else. She quickly realized that it was silly of her to think that she wouldn't find humans... or humanoid looking people anyway. The boy that had suddenly entered the conversation looked human enough to her.

"Oi, they're just coming out of the woodwork now!", this was muttered to Fox, as he was still perched on her shoulder relatively within the hearing distance of muttered-words. He smirked slightly.

"Did you assume you would find no obstacals along your journey, did you think every being you encountered would look supernatural on the outside as well as in?" His voice had the tone of someone with superior knowledge, and while it was true he did posess knowledge far greater than her with respect to this world she saw no reason for him to shove that in her face.

"And who might you be?" she asked the boy choosing to ignore the question he posed to her for the time being. Fox had said the beings here were under the control of the Queen, and those that weren't weren't in a state to do much of anything. Or that was the impression she'd gathered. It was obvious that the younger Suzuki was not a minon of the Queen, but this boy with his armor might very well be.

Subtly, Raine raised a hand, poised to strike with a somewhat well aimed crystal nail should the new arrival chose to attack in anyway. It was times like these (not that their had been times like this before - perhaps the thought that there might be times such as this) that Raine wished she'd asked Brian to teach her how to fight, or at least fend off an attacker. She could only use her nails once per hand and then she was defensless. She couldn't go on luck like that time at Lilith's Palace, which in itself had been too close for comfort. It was something that had been necessary at the time but it really wasn't something she wanted to have to repeat. Ever. But if this person was going to detain her from getting out of this place… well she would do everything in her power to stop that from happening. She had someone to get back to after all.

He looked at her with steady, golden yellow eyes. They were neutral, but somehow critical. He took off his helmet, revealing a sheaf of raven black hair. His clean, black metal armor had no decorations, and neither did his cloak. The only indication of status was his face. Most would consider it noble, or at least holding authority, wisdom and age. It was mostly the latter, seeing as he was bossed around by a twelve year old girl, and constantly forgot that a shield was a defensive weapon, and not a plate on which to make impressions of a demon's face. But he had been alive for many, many years, far more than your average human being.

There was brief, hushed conversation between the older girl and her... familiar. And Jack simply stood there, waiting as the two conversed and the younger, blue haired girl remained quiet. The sharp, golden eyes looked at the smallest of the three, Suzuki, wasn't that her name? She was still fresh from the other world, it seemed. And the little girl reminded him of Lily again. He sighed, and shook his head ruefully. He then turned his attentions to face Raine as she asked him a question. "You may call me Jack, although I have passed by many names before. And technically I'm supposed to be the familiar of a witch, but... oh, never mind, that's not relevant."

He stopped his babbling, and returned his attention to the women and the fox. "So, that aside, who are you, and what are you doing in my... um... friend's domain?" The golden eyes sharpened as he saw her hand move. He had always survived by knowing caution, and in this case it was knowing that any empty hand can reach for a weapon, or cast a spell. He knew that Lily could make her potions explode with the snap of two fingers. And he didn't know if this character in front of him had taken account for that and had set up bomb potions around the place. That really would ruin his day, having that sort of thing blow up under his foot.

"Right, and before you snap your fingers or something and ruin my day, I'll just have to say that I'm not here to start a fight, especially not with people who don't have a reason to try anything." He shrugged, a feat of strength, considering the thick left pauldron and gauntlet of his armor. He gave them a look, saying 'don't try it' with his eyes, and then sighed. Really, some people... well, there weren't much people around the place, so meeting someone was a good thing. Until they tried to kill you, that is. That would simply be annoying for him.

"Now, can one of you three explain to me why you're here?"

Well, he seemed friendly enough, but then the bad guys always did seem friendly before they dismembered you. Not that Raine had ever been dismembered (that she could remember).

"I'm Raine and this is Fox - he's a talking fox, you may have noticed... you said this was your friends domain?" she found this curious considering the entirity of this place was supposed to be ruled by a demented pixie (or whatever sort of Faye creature she was). He didn't seem like the 'entralled by evil' sort. But then again, they never did. She sighed, perhaps it was best to get the explainations out of the way, who knew, maybe she'd found and ally. Or maybe the man would cut her down where she stood once he found out her purpose. "Why am I here? Oh, you know, kill the evil Queen, free the fairy world and go back home through a magically mirror. The usual, I'm sure."

Perhaps she was getting a bit ahead of herself, first thing was first, she had to get to the Mad Hatter once there... well she'd asked Fox once they got there. "Maybe you'd like to help me on my little Quest... I need to find the Mad Hatter?" Not that Fox could very well tell her which way to go only asking this stranger probably wouldn't get her the looks of disbelief that Fox liked to give when she didn't know something. As if she was supposed to know everything about a place she'd never been just because he did, obviously her companion was a little on the nutty side as well as the rest of this place.

If indeed Jack was someone who could help her perhaps she could persuade him to guide her. As cute and helpful as Fox was she didn't think he'd be much help in a fight, Jack on the other hand might be able to lend a fist or two should a scuffle arise. He seemed strong enough, she noted as violet eyes took in the person before her, she really hoped he was on her side if he was any indication of the muscle this pysco queen had at her disposal then Raine was going to need all the help she could get. The more Raine thought on this the more worried she became, she really knew nothing about her advasey, the only thing she had going for her right now was the hope that the Queen didn't know she was here or of her intentions.
