Sunrise seemed to come early on earth. Autumn knew it didn’t really, but today at least, it felt like it had. Most likely it was due to her growing acceptance of various sunrises on other planets far from home. She had found deep slumber amid the tall grass in the meadow, and as she sat up stretching her slender frame, her back shifted and cracked. It was so quiet out there, but warm. The bright orange glow of the morning sunshine could make her feel better, could banish the emotions that haunted her.

For a moment she sat quietly listening to the faint sounds of morning. Birds were waking, filling the air with their songs, and animals began to scurry from their dens in search of food and water. Her clothes were moist with the early due but she didn’t mind. She’d never really had any home but nature. Unless one could consider the lab she’d been manufactured in a home. That had been all white walls and sterile equipment full of silent people endlessly scribbling notes. Notes about her.

She shook her head violently as if that might dislodge the memories that usually only appeared in her nightmares. Autumn had never wanted to be surrounded by metal and hard walls from that day on and had made her bed wherever she could; in caves, meadows, or even a sturdy tree branch.

Rustling in the grass a few feet from her drew her attention and though she remained frozen her ears perked, listening for any signs of attack. A rabbit nose poked out of the grass above her left foot moments later and she gave a little fanged smirk at it, causing the creature to flee in terror. In one fluid motion she propelled herself to her feet and sniffed the air, hoping to catch the smell of some tasty breakfast nearby that she might help herself to.

While Autumn didn’t make it a habit to steal from others she had no way, aside from killing some poor creature like that rabbit, of procuring anything for herself with the current state of things. Of course she could always return to Bantam, the nickname she’d given the planet where she’d most recently taken up residence; thus named because its other occupants were rather on the small side, making even her scant height seem monstrous.

She laughed softly out loud at the thought. Whoever thought she would have been able to claim that she was a giant. It certainly wasn’t something Autumn had ever thought would happen.

Following the wafting smell of food Autumn set off across the meadow. As she walked she tried to find in her memory exactly what the aroma was that was filling her senses. She hadn’t really ate a huge variety of foods when she’d lived on earth before and so it really shouldn’t have been too hard to place the familiar scent and yet she couldn’t find the right word for it.

Growling in frustration she decided it might be best to just give up and be surprised with whatever delicious thing awaited her. Her focus shifted back to her surroundings and she froze instantly. Something was wrong.

The birds which minutes before had been singing happily were silent. Animals had ceased to move and there was an unpleasant stillness to the air that was very different from the quiet calm she’d experienced in the meadow. The only difference between moments before and now was that she’d taken a few steps into the forest.

Her eyes scanned the trees as her breath steadied, allowing her to better hear her surroundings. Muscles tensed, ready to move in any direction at a moment’s notice. Every sense she had was attuned to the world around her and yet… she found nothing; which only served to cause her apprehension to escalate. The fact that her keen senses, trained to far exceed even what they were naturally capable of, were unable to pick up anything worried her.

Forcibly she relaxed her body and began to calmly and slowly continue her trek through the forest. It is always from places that one least expects it that they are attacked. With all her senses attuned to what was around her, Autumn completely neglected to watch where she set her feet aside from what her peripheral vision could tell her.

A sharp clang was the only warning she had before steal teeth bit deep into the flesh of her right ankle. White hot pain spiked straight up to her head and exploded behind her eyes and for a moment the only thing she could do was fight for consciousness. No noise escaped her as she remained frozen in place, panting hard with her eyes rolled up in her head. Several agonizing minutes passed in this fashion as she struggled to breath, her mind reeling as she tried to piece together what had just happened through the haze the pain had pulled over her.

Traps. She knew they existed. Hunters used them to catch and hold an animal until they could return and finish it off. Autumn had simply never thought that they would venture into the woods so close to AHS. But then… maybe the hunters were after a completely different kind of animal. And maybe, just maybe, they’d just caught exactly what they were after.

Attempting to not put any weight on the captured leg she reached down and tentatively brushed her fingers against the metal. A fresh wave of anguish shot through her and this time she wasn’t able to suppress the yowl the burst from her lips. Getting the trap off could prove trickier than she’d thought. Carefully she let her fingers trace their way down along the edge of the trap, ignoring the warm liquid they encountered as they went. Finally she reached the metal stake that kept the trap firmly in place. She tugged on it but though it did little in the way of moving the trap it did manage to jolt her leg enough that she almost blacked out. Tipping forward she managed to throw out her hand and stop herself from landing awkwardly and further jolting her leg.

Her thoughts were too jumbled by pain for any truly clear lines of logic but one still managed to slip through. It was simple and rather to the point.

‘Crap.’
