It explains a lot, no?
[ * * * ]
The location is set inside a large white walled room. Besides the present occupants, there was little else to see, meaning it was a monitoring room. Two men, both formally dressed, stood beside each other by a wall-mounted monitor. The monitor covered the entire upper half of the wall it was on, at the least. On it, a world map is displayed with translucent colors. Several marks on different parts of the world beep with a red dot on them. Next to the dots, small windows rested displaying random information.

One the dots in the map suddenly stopped beeping. It was located onto over the northwestern coast of China. None of them made a sound, but you could tell the air about them turned somewhat heavier. As the man on the right, the one with a large thick dark beard adorning his face, pointed one of his thick fingers at the general region of interest, a new window unfolded itself on the lower left of the first one.

Both men remained silent for a second, as if exchanging words mentally. The other man, slightly smaller than the one who had signaled the screen, pushed his glasses higher up his nose.

Man2: “Test # 98765. Video footage.”

A new widow appeared on the screen, a timer on a corner. It showed the numbers 00:00:00. After showing nothing but complete blackness, for a single second, the screen portrayed a laboratory of sorts. The main object in the screen was a large helmet-like machine. It held a round honey-colored dome over several large metallic parts connected between each other with plastic tubes and steaming pipes. Inside it, something stood still in the middle of the thing. The crystal didn’t let see clearly what it was, but it surely was human-like. The word ‘begin’ echoed from some point out of view and soon the room was filled with a soft buzzing sound. As the sound grew louder, the machine’s dome came to life with differently colored lights. One was especially bright, and seemed to be in the middle of the thing. In the background, of ever so lightly, a female scream echoed. As the lights within the dome appeared faster, the screams turned louder and longer. Nor the men in white surrounding the helmet-thing, neither the men watching the video’s replay, hinted being touched by the ongoing desperate screams.

Man2: “Fast-forward.”

The timer on the video’s lower left corner picked up speed and minutes flew by but little did change on the shown scene. Once they reached the mark 00:14:54, everything changed. The brighter light within the dome, turned brightest and, accordingly to the rocking motion the camera did, the ground shook in the laboratory. These events attracted everyone’s attention to the center of the room for the following seconds. The unnatural light and the ground’s vibration halted exactly at the 00:15:00 mark.

The video stopped at mark 00:15:26. The last image on the video was that of a limp body on the ground. It was a young pale humanoid figure, its gender hard to tell thanks to the position it had. Three seconds later, the video turned back to black and then the window shut itself down. Still the men held the same positions they had been for the last minutes, and spoke not even meeting each other’s eyes.

Man2: “Subject 2367’s core reached resonance 6 seconds before her limit. The satellites confirm the energy signature on the globe map at that time as well. She became a beacon and attracted the unknown subject.”

The other made no reply, but they both knew what else they needed seeing. This attack had a tremendous impact on their future plans. They needed to know more of their foe, who had so blatantly destroyed one of their facilities. They already was these people were capable of, but they had never seen something like this in their entire time during this project.

Man2: “Surveillance. Exterior. All cameras. XX:XX to XX:XX”

With his command, the monitor came once more to live as it had dimmed itself a level o two. Ten different video squares popped out in the giant screen. All of them hinted small parts of the building and their surroundings. Besides that, nothing for the next seconds. They did not show anything at all until six of them became blank and the other shook.

Man2: “Surveillance. Laboratory. Same lapse.”

The same laboratory from the same angle as before appeared in a single window. Nothing on show until a bright flash illuminated the whole room. A slender pale woman, in her middle twenties, stood in the middle of the room dressed in a long brilliant robe. She studied the machine from where she had probably sensed the call and then turned in the general direction where the study subject’s cell was located. Then she focused on her surroundings and then started shining brighter. The last thing shown was a spherical object growing larger. What followed was pure static. This was probably when half of the building was turned into nothing but a memory.

Man2: “Surveillance. Cell. From where Laboratory stops.”

Facilities like this obviously had personal and equipment to handle situations like this one, so the upcoming scene was not hard to imagine. Three men, armed with large beam weapons, stood on the ground aiming at a shining round object. The thing slowly made its way to a metallic door at the end of the hallway. As the men opened fire, the bubble surrounding the woman faded into nothing for a couple of seconds. Dazzled, the woman held her head with a single hand. As she focused again, the men had no time to fire their still recharging weapons. All of them were knocked down by an invisible force. As each of them was hit, something round shone on contact.

The shield reconstituted itself around its owner and soon the woman reached the door. Once the shield pushed it open, the troopers had armed themselves again and made fire. The shield didn’t go out this time, but the sphere did move a little. A small silhouette moves in the background, the camera almost missing it due to the wideness of the light sphere. Again the soldiers opened fire but this time their shots met the woman. Her shield was around the place were the small figure had been just a second ago. The woman flinched but remained standing. Wounds now adorned her visible parts but there was not a hole in her attire. A bright liquid oozed from the gashes.

Before the soldiers could open fire once more, the sphere was gone, but the enemy still stood in front of them. The beams were shot again and they found their target. The woman, apparently screaming in pain, fell backwards but never met the ground. She had vanished in mid flight. The video came to a stop there.

Again both men stood still in silence for a while. The video had shown things new to them and to their project. One could say one of them was even content of having witnessed this. The older bearded man had a more serious look on his face. The look you have when you lose a great load of money.

Man1: “Why didn’t our satellites see that thing coming?”
Man2: “I need to do some more research on that. I’ll pass this info to our branches. I’m sure some colleges will find this the most interesting.”

As the younger man turned to leave, the monitor’s display faded away, leaving the white room in complete darkness. The last visible thing was the evil grin curled on the lips of the bearded man, whose teeth seemed to shine with unnatural light. He was alone now, but nonetheless spoke out loud to himself.

Man1: “This can be a great opportunity with the meta-hating society, heh..”
