She had set up shop on top of the roof of the building that held the classroom and now awaited eagerly, peering through the precipice into the courtyard below. The portal to the roof had been bolted shut--she had seen to that. They could probably get in eventually but at least she would be warned.

She was in a kneeling position, trying her best not to attract attention. It was for that reason that he hood was down. She felt bare and vulnerable but knew too well that the bright red of the cloth she wore was like a beacon. Beside her was a crossbow--a stolen museum piece in remarkably good order. There was also a number of bolts.

There were people Red had been itching to fill with needles but first, she had to get the hang of aiming. That was what she was here for--target practice. Yes, target practice and, yes, target practice on the student populace. Porcupining her targets, if it ever came to that, would be a plus too.

The door to the roof shattered into peaces as a mysterious boy walked through. “Why didn’t this door open when I used the handle? he thought to himself. The boy had a mask that completely hid his face with the exception of his eyes. His were as dark as coal and were impossible to read. His clothes were odd to say the least, but probably not as strange as the blue energy-like substance that swirled around his body. He was obviously not human but what unknown was that he was also not a meta-human. The boy looked at the girl in red. “Hello hello.” He whispered.

The boy instantly noticed the weapon the girl had. “Now please, humor me. Tell why you are up here all alone, on school grounds no less, with a weapon?” The blackness in the boy’s eyes could make people feel uncomfortable when around him. His emotions were unreadable in this form other than from the tone of his voice. He was calm, and even his voice held no emotion right now. “I suggest that you put that weapon away before I confiscate it. Unless of course you want people to be hurt.”

Dominic was having a bad day. He had just flunked five major exams in five different classes, he had had less than eight hours of sleep for at least half a year now and his girlfriend had just earlier dumped him for a smarter idiot--with only a .01 difference in IQ! All in all he was in a particularly low point in his life.

The crossbow bolt sticking on his shoulder was certainly no help at all.

"ARGH!" he shouted, flailing about ineffectively, serving only to drive the bolt deeper into his flesh, as he ran into a wall and fainted.

Curses, Red thought. The sudden explosion of the door had served to surprise her and the shot had been waaaaaaaaaaaaay off. That and there was the new problem of the person now demanding that she surrender her weapon immediately.

Now the boy did two things wrong. One, he blew the door to itty-bitty pieces and two, he made demands on Red--demands that would've depraved her of her defenses.

She said nothing as she lowered the crossbow gently on the floor. Pulling the hood of her cloak over her face, Red suddenly sprung into action, lunging at him, her red cloak, sinuous and lifelike as if it were flowing lifeblood, billowing against the wind. There was a wicked looking knife on her hand now, sharp and ragged aimed at his lung.

“Hehehe, pathetic.” The boy quickly put a stop to the attack by calling upon the power of his pet, his inner phantom. It was a big dragon-like creature with multiple whip-like tongues. The phantom picked the boy up with his tongues and got him away from the knife. The boy now stood on his pet’s head. “I don’t want to cause you pain, but if you keep trying to kill people I’ll have no choice but to hurt you.” The beast growled gently, it was a little more pissed off than the boy himself. “By the primitive way you attack, it seems that you are nothing more than a human with a grudge. Even if you were one of those meta-humans, you probably won’t be able to do me much harm.”

The boy jumped off his creature’s head and gave it a gentle pat on the head. The strangest thing was that the boy didn’t yet show his power that he used to blow up the door. “Please, drop this ridiculous onslaught and put the weapons away. Or perhaps you want me to use force?” The boy tried to be polite but the blackness in his eyes may it hard to tell if he was really being sincere. “Or maybe you just want to talk out your problems? If that’s the case then my ears are open.”

She made a low growl as she backed off. At the moment, there was nothing to be done. The beast was too high up for her to do anything and there was simply no way to reload her crossbow without letting her guard down. She had to therefore put up with both the dragon and the boy's self-righteous sermon--what was it with every loon in AHS and their unholy tendency to speak nonsense everytime they fought?

Now Red was a paranoid. Red was a very paranoid paranoid and she was pretty much deaf to everything but the words "hurt you." In her mind, this very much justified giving this obnoxious boy a second mouth on his throat from ear to ear.

She edged away little by little and then grabbed her crossbow, hastily strapping it on her back before making a mad dash as if to stab him again only to feint away and run to the open staircase.

“Running away huh? That’s just no fun.” The phantom wrapped its tongues around the boy’s arms and legs. “Let’s meet her again in the courtyard.” The boy had something in him, it wasn’t exactly a self-righteous attitude that guided, but a hatred that was buried deep in his heart. His false self-righteousness was now merely a front, an illusion to disguise his hatred and disgust that he felt towards other people. The boy didn’t even need to command his pet to do what he wanted; there was a deep connection between the two.

The phantoms climbed off the roof and began to run down the side of the building. Then soon digging its claws into the building to slow to a stop and let the boy down safely. “Now, where is she? Still in the building?” The inner phantom began to run around franticly in and out of the building, searching for the girl in red. The boy was now in the midst of playing a game, he made the girl in red a target and this was now his idea of target practice. “Come on out.... give me the pleasure of a good fight.... help me unlock my past....” The boy was whispering to himself, he was losing himself.

[If anything, Mark's contract is an excuse]

Mark wandered the halls, thankfully now he had some female clothes. To be honest, it was weird. For goodness sake, he was meant to be a seventeen year old male, not this... girl. Rrrgh, it was getting pretty annoying. Ever since he had been changed form boy to girl by that gender bending metahuman... who was she, anyway? He looked at the mirror-like glass of the sixth floor. A girl looked back at him. A long, golden curtain of hair brushed her ankles and framed her face. Ice blue eyes were set into a western featured face. The girl was dressed in a pair of jeans, a shirt and a vest. She also carried a smallish gym bag, dark green in color.

Heading to the roof, Mark knew that he really needed to head off to find Red. Annoying little paranoid stab-machine or not, she was still a contract. He still owed her the protection of the Marauders. Hey, they had been paid up-front. That, and the roof was a good place to find someone from. It had been a crucial vantage point in many of the contracts around here. Mark checked that he had his knives and the pistol, too. He didn't carry around the shotgun; it was too much recoil for his thirteen year old body to handle.

Then came the sounds of a fight as the girl approached the stairs. Mark casually flicked out his knife, a half-serrated blade normally found in the German Army. He figured it was something of the usual, before he saw Red in the staircase. "What the!?" She began to backpedal, grabbing the gym bag and pulling back. "Hey, what's going on?" Looking over her shoulder, Mark began to follow her.

"Alright, hey, tell me what's happening!"

Crap! Red thought. Someone was following her and it looked, oddly enough, like that annoying boy Mark only it was female and not Mark at all. She was too busy. Doubtless, the dragon and that boy would not let go of her so easily, which she expected. Running towards the stairs, she stopped and pulled the crossbow from her back and down, going through the motions of reloading the ungainly weapon. She glared at the girl, hoping she wouldn't bother her. Red had been ignoring her demands for an explanation and she certainly hoped that was enough for this mysterious stranger to leave her be.

Weapon reloaded, she found to her dismay that the strange girl was still there, so she put a finger on her lips signaling for the tag along be silent. She moved about carefully, ears alert for any noise--it was most certain that the passing of a huge dragon would not go unnoticed and sure enough, noise from the floor below told her that her target was most likely there.

She waited on the stairs, trying to see if the dragon would attempt to go up. Though the dorm and its corridors were large, they were still very much a cramped space which made it much easier for Red to fight. The boy had been mistaken, unstable as she was, Red was not someone to be dismissed outright. She was not trying to flee--she was making sure the field was even.

The phantom moved around the building slithering around. Its tail smashed into and moved against the walls of the hallways. After clearing the lower floor it began to move upwards. The phantom stopped dead in its tracks as it saw the target along with a second person. The phantom faded away at that moment as if retreating. It just vanished and returned back to the boy’s power.

The boy that was glowing an intense blue color called out his phantom once more. “Two? Sounds a little more fun than before.” The boy looked behind him at the rest of the courtyard. He saw all the people wandering, hanging out, and just generally getting in the way. “First though, let’s clear out the courtyard.” The boy’s phantom let out a loud roar before letting its whip-like tongues frighten out the majority of people. “Good boy, keep it while we wait for our guests.”

Hair billowing out behind him like a riding hood of his own, Mark continued to run after Red, glancing nervously behind him as they continued along. He followed Lillian Grimm, and soon stopped as she began to reload the crossbow. Looking at the primitive weapon with a hint of curiousity and genuine confusion, Mark looked up at Red. "Um... hey, you still use those things? They're ancient... no offense, though." He held up his palms in apology, almost sweat-dropping as Mark reached for his pistol, keeping it hidden in his messenger bag. Red had only seen Mark Foley as a shotgun wielder, and he knew that there were plenty of knife-wielders around. Red herself included.

Breathing a little shallow from the exercise, Mark kept her battle-stance, slightly adjusted for the shorter stature that he now possessed. He knew that Red was pretty much a paranoid girl, so he kept his own mannerisms in check, looking down the halls. Ice-blue eyes looked at Red, and she sighed, trying to smile a little. "You almost ran me over back there... what's chasing us?" He looked down the hallway again, wishing that Red would explain more about this situation.

The roar echoed throughout the dorms, and Mark's eyes grew wide. "What was that?" He looked around, afraid. He knew the feeling well, but in this form... it was more of a physical force. Damn... if he were in his other body, he would have been more confident in taking something on. But nonetheless, he still had a pistol, knives, and his powers and brain. That would have to be enou- wait, he also had a crossbow-weilding paranoid girl. They would have to do.
