The trip through the Dragon's Nest did indeed only take scant minutes. The trip itself was uneventful, mostly because it was so short. Traveling by magic really was much quicker than conventional means. As the group arrived at a destination that looked very similar to the one they'd just left, the large bubble slowly disappearing as soon as their feet hit the ground, Jiraiya sniffed at the air. It was stale and somewhat dank. A good sign, as most Dragon's Nests were what humans would call haunted buildings. Older places that people considered infected by evil spirits or demons or some other figment of their rather poor imaginations. Jiraiya made his way towards the stairs, smiling a bit. He didn't feel anything horribly out of place at the moment, which, he felt, meant that their departure and arrival had gone undetected. Such was the reason for taking a dragon's Nest: If they'd tried a gate or Portkey or any other means of magical transport, it would surely have attracted the attention of the Oni or the Nation. The Dragon Nests were essentially Ley Lines. they had always existed, and thus few people even in the supernatural community paid them much notice other than to draw power from their possibly inexhaustible reserves. Only the Kitsune, during their race's early years, had chosen to use them as transport. "Looks like we're still good." Jiraiya remarked, reaching the top of the stairs and pushing on the trapdoor. It didn't budge. Quirking and eyebrow, Jiraiya pushed harder and harder, finally realizing that it simply wasn't about to give any time in this century. Sighing, he withdrew a tuning fork from his pocket. Pouring a bit of energy into the device, Jiraiya tapped it against his leg, quickly pointing it at the trapdoor. As the fork vibrated, it's soundwaves grew so powerful that the distortion in air was easily visible, busting open the trapdoor with ease, sending splinters of wood all over whatever building was above them. "There doesn't seem to be anything immediately wrong here." Jiraiya continued. "Most people in the magical community ignore activity on Dragon's Nests or don't have the equipment or powers to monitor it properly. Teleporting or a portal could have been quicker, but this is our stealthiest option." Making his way out of the trapdoor, Jiraiya looked around. The ambient dust and stank of extremely old objects told him that whatever this place was, noone had touched it for a long time indeed. The tables and chairs suggested it had at one point been a restaurant. The decor suggested 1950s or 60s time-period, either on purpose or it had just been abandoned that long. Judging from the signs of aging, Jiraiya guessed the latter. "Everyone spread out and let's have a look around this place." He remarked, eyeing the counter and the large ovens behind it. Ah the classic pizza-parlor, a staple of American culture and a joke of Japanese culture. "We're here and everything seems safe for the moment. Might as well take some time to have a look at our surroundings. Nobody leave just yet, though I wouldn't say no to trying to make a clean-patch on those windows so we can see where we are." He finished, sticking his head behind the counter and generally poking around. From the size it seemed like the place might have at an even earlier time been a saloon or something, bearing a stairway to a second floor towards the back, four or five doors leading to rooms on the second floor. Since those times it seemed to have been converted to it's current state, but still found itself, for whatever reasons, unwanted. Settling himself in an aged chair, Jiraiya slouched a bit over the table, putting his head in his hands and running his hands through his long hair. This was too fast for him. If it's not a fight, he felt, one shouldn't be rushing decisions. The entire situation bothered him. The Council seemed as calm and collected as ever considering one of their royal treasures was gone. Just how long had they known it was gone? Did they have a hand in it's departure? Was this just some ruse to get people like himself, Rish, and Daggoth, the people who would be most likely to oppose them if they tried something, out of the way? There were so few answers...Jiraiya didn't like leading without answers.... |

(Travel by Dragon's Nest was not something Rish was entirely familiar with, personally. She'd only heard about it, never really exploited it. This could be because she enjoyed the thrill of the journey along with the destination as well. Basically, you could see her as the type who believes that getting there is half the fun. But they didn't have time for pleasure when it was time for business. Daggoth remained stoically silent, keeping his eyes peeled for anything wrong as they traveled. No such thing occurred, as well it shouldn't. Provided the Dragon's Nest worked properly, they would arrive without harm. They ended up in a dark place, suited to his element. It smelled musty, though. The dust made his nose itch, unlike Rish...who couldn't be bothered by such earthly issues. Keeping eyes, ears, and noses wary, Rish and Daggoth followed Jiraiya. They looked back every now and then to make sure the rest were following. To a pair of renegades like them, it didn't matter how many tails were involved. The ones on security detail were the brother and sister.) "Looks like we're still good." (They'd arrived at a trapdoor when he said this. Daggoth snerked when he tried to open it, failing for some reason. It just seemed fairly ironic to him. Finally, the kitsune in charge soundwaved the door open with a tuning fork. Curious... Did he have a set technique there or was he more of an elemental savant? Either way, that was a very messed up door now.) "There doesn't seem to be anything immediately wrong here. Most people in the magical community ignore activity on Dragon's Nests or don't have the equipment or powers to monitor it properly. Teleporting or a portal could have been quicker, but this is our stealthiest option." Daggoth: Oh, so that's the reason... (He actually hadn't considered it, that the leaping in and out of shadows could be felt by sensitive beings. Most people and creatures were not, so he may have overlooked the sensitivity of the Oni. It was easy to do such. The Void was this vast place connected to everything and nothing. He could remain in there for extended periods of time, the enemy not knowing where he'd emerge. Still, if some could feel it WHEN he was doing it, then Jiraiya's plan made sense. They stepped out into the old building and Daggoth had to cover his nose.) Rish: Allergies? Daggoth: Stench of a thousand bad recipes. I see you're not bothered... Rish: Not in the slightest. "Everyone spread out and let's have a look around this place. We're here and everything seems safe for the moment. Might as well take some time to have a look at our surroundings. Nobody leave just yet, though I wouldn't say no to trying to make a clean-patch on those windows so we can see where we are." Rish: A few little aspects and I can have this place searched top to bottom. (She was about to do this when Daggoth stopped her.) Daggoth: Let's keep the powers to a minimum. If he's right, we don't want to attract too much attention. Rish: Very well, then. I'll be upstairs. (Her wakizashis appeared in her hands as she took to walking up to the next floor. Daggoth took to wiping just a thumb against the window at first, allowing him to just look with one eye to start with. The less they exposed themselves, the better, and the keen eyes of a fox would surely divine their surroundings well enough from a small gap. He didn't like this, for pretty much the same reasons as Rish. They were right to question how much they could trust those Elders. Regardless, they would see this through...in their own manner. Rish stopped upstairs and listened, at first. This place was fairly dead, undisturbed. Nevertheless, she took care, and began to open doors carefully...) |

"Adara, are you okay?" "Ooooh, the whole area is spinning..." Adara seemed to have swirly eyes as she had difficulty with being able to stand on her own two feet. Using her own body to help Adara, Sakura looked at her with a smile on her face as she then turned to look at the seven tailed kitsune. For now, she was going to keep a very close eye on him. Their sandal clad feet continued to pad against the underground as Sakura sniffed the air. The area seemed to be something that is usually not used many times. But she couldn't be able to discern what would really be an Oni. She had yet to smell anything that was catching her off guard. In either case, she continued to keep her wits about her. She watched as Rish pulled out one of her weapons and immediately reached into her holster to take out one of her desert eagles. Rish seemed to have the right idea: for the time normal weapons would have to be used before she would have to resort using her kitsune powers. Stepping out into the light, she looked around carefully and sniffed the air. The area seemed too quiet for her taste. Adara was then the next person to step out. She seemed to have a sense of apprehension in her eyes as she looked around. Towns and cities never sat well with the hybrid. There was always the possibility that she would have to deal with a kitsune that was from her time and try to seal her or even kill her. In either case, she kept her nose to the air. Her attention seemed to be kept to the pizza parlor. With her ears perked up, she immediately moved to it and looked inside curiously. It was the scent of the various things that went on here that had caught her eye. Poking her head into the kitchen, she began to smell for the meat they used and found some pepperoni. Curiously she sniffed it and began to nibble the meat. Meanwhile, Sakura had been in the front of the restaurant. She had her gun ready and opening the door to the restrooms so that there would be no surprises. |

Unsurprisingly, the place was essentially deserted, save for the occasional mouse or spider scuttling around in darkened corners. The place truly had the dust of ages on it, it seeming like people had simply forgotten it or avoided it on purpose. Outside, however, things were more lively. Pumpkin lights and other 'spooky' decorations were strung along the street, the latter looking as though it was essentially the main thoroughfare for the small town. The town itself looked slightly dated, as many remote towns did. The architecture was old, the stores were conservative, and there seemed to be more churches than bars in this little hamlet of the bible-belt. However what was most surprising was the people in the city: Almost all of them were human. Pure, simple humans. Hardly any of them had an activated meta-human gene. But that was quite simply impossible, wasn't it? the Nation had marched from coast to coast. Surely a place like this would have been ground down to rubble or less. Perhaps it was the abundance of farms seen not too far outside of the town, or perhaps it was the sheer size of the little place. It seemed like one of those places that cartographers forget to put on maps. Perhaps that was it's saving grace. The people in the streets seemed happy, the children and younger teenagers in costumes running about, many of the costumes hand-made. The parents talking in small groups, laughing and smiling. There was no need to watch the kids too closely. This town was so small, what could realistically happen? However there was indeed danger here. Yet it was not quite the kind one would think. It was a danger of exposure. Vast cities have so much going on that supernatural energies are of little notice alongside the city's ambient aura. Places like this were so small, so utterly normal, that anything with a hint of the arcane stuck out like a sore thumb. In fact many of the best human mages came from such towns as it's townsfolk had developed a subconscious but fairly accurate supernatural radar due to their isolation from such influences. In other words, they were simply so godawful normal that they could spot the paranormal with a certain degree of efficiency. Thus was why only goofball teenagers were mulling around the old pizza-joint, debating if they should go in or not. Hearing the argument, Jiraiya moved over to the window where Daggoth was standing, rubbing another hole to see things himself. "Well isn't this a quaint little hideaway..." Jiraiya grumbled. Just what they needed: to end up in a town in the middle of nowhere. "The country could probably tear itself apart and these folks wouldn't know about it. But the sword is definitely here, somewhere..." There was indeed a strong sense of magic in the town, radiating from one point not awfully far away. However it seemed like they'd have to search the town to see where it was coming from.... |

(With little surprise, there wasn't exactly much to be found in the entire place. At least, nothing suspicious. Rish's sweep of the upstairs was completely uneventful, though a brief snicker was heard from her up there. Meanwhile, Daggoth's glare of the outside was as revealing as it was discreet. Looks like...a smallish sort of town-setting with Halloween decorations out there. Or possibly Ghostmas? Hard to tell, exactly. Point is, it gave him...ideas. The fact that these people seemed like ungifted humans meant that they could possibly be incredibly gullible. At least, if he played it right. Nothing high-end or proactive. It's just that...when you consider the season and the setting, they might not seem as conspicuous if they kept the magic to a minimum. People were in costume. Perhaps...) Daggoth: Hmmm... (Jiraiya was watching as well. He seemed to confirm the fact that the sword was in here. Yes... There was a feeling, though he was better at this. He saw and heard the teenagers out there. If they came in here, he knew just how to play it. Oh yes, this would work. They would... What was that sound? Sort of a crunching sound. Daggoth turned to find Rish chewing on something. He smelled fresh blood.) Daggoth: Rish, what're you...? Rish: A mouse. Daggoth: Now? (She shrugged, and headed over to where Adara was, just briefly.) Rish: You realize that meat is probably old, right? (Meanwhile, Daggoth looked out again, and then said to both Sakura and Jiraiya...) Daggoth: You know, we could pretend to be in costume, easy. In fact, they might fall for it even more if we had some cheap-looking masks as well. A tiny diversion like that and they'll welcome us as one of their own. (The plan Daggoth had was very simple. If people were out trick-or-treating and having Halloween/Ghostmas fun, their forms might not be of any special note to the masses. Furthermore, if they simply had some cheapo masks, they'd assume even more so that they were a part of the night's festivities. It wasn't a bad idea, and would require only the tiniest spell unless there was a convenient store out there. The only thing was that this offer had a time limit, in case the teens out there decided to let their balls drop. Rish heard this and smirked, making her swords disappear.) Rish: Provided nobody sees us saying or doing anything too out of the ordinary, they could be taken completely unawares, and then we could home in on whoever this king is. |

"Hm?" Adara blinked a couple of times towards the direction of Rish. She wasn't really sure what she meant when she said old. To her, old meant that was completely rotten and it wouldn't be wise to eat. She learned this thing all too well after eating a kill that wasn't very fresh. She had a severe case of indigestion that seemed to last a couple of days. While the stick of meat was still in her mouth, she flicked the pepperoni up to her nose many times to smell the meat. It was old, but not the kind of old that she normally was aware of. She did this several times before looking at her again. "It smells different...not rotten but different..." Sakura had appeared behind Adara as she watched her daughter flick the pepperoni up to her nose. "I believe it is aged meat Adara. It's kind of a controlled tenderizing. Plus..." she smelled the meat as well as she watched her daughter. "There is a scent of preservatives." Adara finished off the pepperoni in one gulp as she looked at her mother with a smile. "Just remember Adara, that stuff can give you a heartburn if you aren't careful okay?" Adara nodded her head as she then watched the seven tailed kitsune. Turning her head to look at Daggoth, she seemed to have a confused look on her face. "What is halloween?" Adara didn't really know what it was since she normally stays within the forest. Sakura looked at her daughter and smiled at her softly. "Well, Halloween is a time when there is a sense of the supernatural. It is also a time for some celebrating. In places like this, normally young children go door to door in costumes for trick or treating." Adara continued to maintain the sense of curiousity as she spoke. "Trick or treating?" Sakura knelt down in front of her daughter as she continued to speak. "It's when you go door to door for candy." Adara's ears immediately perked up as her tail moved around happily. "Can I try that mom?" Sakura looked at her daughter as she smiled. "I don't see why not. We do need to blend in after all. Right," she said while looking at Jiraiya. |

"I suppose that isn't a horribly bad idea..." Jiraiya mused. Certainly it would be quicker than staying in here and hoping the new King would come to them.... "All right, then, let's spread out and search. If you find what we're looking for, or if things go south, let's meet here." he said, still looking outside. "we may have to do some quick thinking in the way of explanations, but that's what most of us are good at. Let's get moving." With that Jiraiya closed his eyes, again shifting his appearance. The hair grew shorter and gained a brownish-blond color, the face became younger, his body more lithe. He was now a figure in his early twenties, with casual clothes and a younger stride, he looked like he'd be more at home yelling to Uncle Owen about how the droid had a stuck motivator. Taking a moment to make sure noone was looking in their direction, Jiraiya ushered his group out of the Dragon's Nest and into the street, sincerely hoping that noone would pay them much attention in all the festivity of the evening. Letting the group scatter, Jiraiya headed down the street, listening and watching. Many of the adults and teenagers were laughing about normal things, talking about town gossip. Yet noone seemed to mention anything out of the ordinary.... Yet Jiraiya could sense the energies of the sword...it was indeed drawing closer to their area. Furthermore it was intermingled with the energies of a...human? That didn't seem right. Why would a human have the sword? The only reason Jiraiya could think of for that would be they were transporting it to it's true master. But still....if living as long as he had had taught him anything, it was that ANYTHING was possible with magic.... |

Rish: Aged? Hmmm. I must be a bit behind. (She hadn't actually known that about meats, about all the different preservation methods. Rish wasn't a cook, certainly not a restaurant owner, so she wouldn't know better. It was in cases such as these that Sakura's human-based knowledge was better suited to the task, explaining it to Adara. Giving a nod, Rish listened in on what came next, almost laughing when the wolf-kit asked her brother what Halloween was. Daggoth looked at her funny when she did, wondering why the hell a kid doesn't know what Halloween is. Granted, she was not human, but even a fox who doesn't get out much learns the basics, right? Meanwhile, Jiraiya was considering Daggoth's plan...) "I suppose that isn't a horribly bad idea..." (It was a damn good idea, in his opinion. Maybe he didn't like silly charades, but they had a habit of working at times, so one cannot argue. In any case, he and Rish both watched as he transformed into a...a fair rendition of a famous movie star. Rish's eyebrow arched, but she said nothing. Daggoth facepalmed, muttering some crap like, "This isn't the disguise we're looking for.", before moving on. Rish applied her ninja-attire, mask and all. Daggoth...created a simple face-mask and put it on.) Rish: Ummm, Daggoth, you can't just- Daggoth: It's Halloween, Rish. Rish: And that mask is your disguise? It's just a fox-mask. Daggoth: No, it's a Jackal mask. I'm Anubis. Rish: You just don't like taking a human form, do you? Daggoth: Also true. (She shook her head as Jiraiya escorted them outside. They would have to split up for this. Daggoth and Rish went in different directions from Jiraiya himself. Their ideas naturally differed on certain points.) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rish: Now then... Let's show the world how much my training has paid off. (This was a time where Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme" would most likely fit. As soon as Rish was out of the sight of the group, she decided to stay out of sight, period. This wasn't actually a hard feat. People weren't looking around, suspiciously. They were having a good time, and Rish wasn't even using her powers to hide and sneak. She'd trained as a ninja for like 300 years. If she didn't know how to invoke stealth the way a human does, then no kit could. It was when she was going from a tree branch to slinking across a rooftop that she felt her suspicions were confirmed. Nobody in this town seemed to know anything.) Rish: I may have to call up some spirits to get a few straight answers. I wonder if there's a cemetery around... (Then, beneath the mask, she smirked.) Rish: I wonder if there's a cemetery a Halloween party going on. (From her position, though, she felt something else that got her immediate attention. Energy. You think you can avoid the senses of a spirit fox? Fat chance, fella. She felt an aura of fox energy coming from a direction, but something was...off. Blocked? Distorted? Dilapidated? Rish returned to the ground while nobody was watching and just started to walk that way. Her spiritual senses were like a well-tuned radar. She didn't even have to look, really.) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Daggoth wandered out in the open from the beginning. No, actually...that isn't accurate. He wandered like someone in a mask trying to scare some folk. What can we say? He was in the Halloween spirit. So far, he'd gotten several people by surprise while pretending to be the scary guy at Halloween. Parents who saw him either laughed if it wasn't their kids or complained if they were. He just laughed at them and moved on. All while doing this, though, he kept his eyes and ears peeled. Where was this sword and the king that was supposedly attached to it. He'd gotten a feeling a little while ago, but he lost it. And of course, because the universe hated him, that's when a teenaged girl dressed as a witch noticed him and came over to him.) "Hey, that's a nice costume. Where'd you get it?" Daggoth: Actually, I made it. You can't get it like this in a store. "Cool. You doing anything now, or...?" Daggoth: I'm scaring the hell out of people. "Well, right time for it, I guess." (Just then, Daggoth's nose twitched behind his mask, and he felt something. He looked around. No, that wasn't the sword. That was...something else?) "Something wrong?" Daggoth: Do you smell something burning? "Like in an oven?" Daggoth: No, like...things left out in the sun too long. S'cuse me. (He left quickly, wondering if what he smelt and felt were true. It was kind of like burning ions and similar air-ripping scents, and the feeling he had was of an energy that seemed familiar, only he wasn't sure it was necessarily the sword.) Time and Space folds for a moment, allowing us a glimpse into places where our heroes do not walk.... -------------------------------------- "BISHOP!!!" The Kit known as Bishop stopped in his tracks upon hearing his name spoken. Well, more accurately it was screeched, screamed, or yelled with the fury of a thousand hells behind it. The Checkmate Four member adjusted his glasses, pushing them higher up onto his nose and brushed a few strands of black hair aside from his face. Smiling slightly, he strode in the direction of the yell, a trail of snow following him as it fell from nothingness down onto him. Pausing only to adjust his black Cossack a bit, Bishop reached out a hand to the handle of a brilliantly-crafted and ornate door, opening it and walking into a large and equally ornate room. "You wished to see me, Queen-sama?" he smiled, stopping on the threshold of the room proper and bowing at the woman sitting on the raised-platform of the room proper. She was actually quite attractive, and would have been moreso if her face hadn't been contorted with rage. He red eyes burned like live embers, though the rest of her seemed quite calm. Looking over to Bishop so quickly her long black hair swirled around her, Queen debated in her mind if she should vent her full fury at the situation at Bishop... "I demand answers, Bishop!" She yelled. "What's the holdup?! I AM THE RIGHTFUL HEIR TO THE THRONE!" "My apologies, Queen-sama, but I do not have the answer to your question." Bishop said, his smirk still in place. He sat upon the platform, his eyes going from the shoes left on the mat to the door which he had accidentally left open. A quick burst of frigid arctic wind slammed it closed. "The most I can say," he continued, looking over his shoulder to lay eyes on her, still smirking. "is that tradition still seems to hold." "I don't give a shit if the Council wants to try and follow that idiotic prophecy!" Queen screeched, the heat in the room starting to rise. "That rusted old blade could be anywhere in the world by now, being held by anyone! Just because it left doesn't mean it wound up in the hands of some chosen one!" she finished, slamming her cup of tea down on the table, causing some of the contents to spill over. "This is certainly true." Bishop concurred. "However the people believe in the sword's legend. With our numbers only now beginning to grow once more, our people are desperate for a tangible sign of new hope and prosperity, of positive change. The Elders included. I'm afraid that as you are right now, assuming the throne would be disastrous to morale. We would be better off throwing ourselves to the Oni." "So you think I can't lead?!" "I think Queen-sama would be an excellent ruler." Bishop clarified quietly and calmly. "However your current attitude of mourning for your father does not reflect the era of change and expansion that the people are clamoring for. If we are to convince the Elders to let you take throne without the sword, your current behavior must be modified to show them what they wish to see; and even then there is a risk...." "What risk?!" Queen snapped, adjusting her Kimono, which was an exercise in futility and simply a distraction for her hands. She'd always worn tight kimonos, especially ones tight around the chest. She only fidgeted with it now to stop herself from choking Bishop. Yes, she really needed anger-management. "If you were to assume leadership..." Bishop began, choosing his words carefully. Noone knew better than he did that Queen, despite being the epitome of a wet-dream for most men, had enough power and temper to make volcanic eruptions look like a cute bonfire. Well, he almost knew better than anyone. Rook was really the one who had the most experience with Queen's tripwire temper. Sometimes Bishop wondered how the poor halfbreed dealt with it... "The only way your rule could be usurped" He continued, "would be if the true bearer of the sword returned. You are the darling of the media right now, but the public loves tradition even more than you. I'm afraid to say that if the new ruler returned bearing the sword, there would be nothing even I could do." "Hmmm...." Queen mused, her features growing less twisted as she absorbed this information. "You have a point. But we can't be the only ones who talk about this." "KNIGHT!!!" --------------------------------------------- Jiraiya stalked along one of the streets of the small town. It was actually a rather quaint place. Quiet, simple, happy. He actually found himself liking it. It seemed a peaceful place, even if it was a bit weak on supernatural energy. Stopping for a moment on a corner, Jiraiya looked up towards the sky, closing his eyes and letting his senses reach out, not knowing that Rish was effectively above him. So much for splitting up. It was sheer coincidence, but still somewhat irritating. Many magic-users who track energies often talk of things like vibrations and pitches. The reason for this was really quite simple: tracking magical power was much like taking hallucinogens when all you have is echolocation. Your senses stretch out, 'pinging' anything that has a magical aura in the area, the feedback returning to you, looking like colored soundwaves in your mind's eye. to the trained, the colors, the patterns, and even the style of the feedback all tell you something about your target. Of course this was not quite how everyone sensed magic, but it was Jiraiya's method. Great energy was nearby. The waves were many and strong. They were also confined, orderly. The power was so great it was almost stifling, by the gods they had to be close! Opening his eyes Jiraiya looked across the street to a small group of teenagers turning the corner to walk down the main street, chatting unconcernedly. His eyes landed on one of the boys that was trailing towards the back of the group... He was a strong and stout type, had he had some more height and muscle to him, as well as some blond hair, he might have been the example of the stereotypical farmer's son. As it was his hair was a darker brown, though still long, tied in a thick braid down his back. He was slightly darker-skinned, though it was a tan, doubtless from working long days in fields harvesting crops. He looked a bit confused, as well as a bit worried. though the logic behind that could be the gleaming Kitana, still sheathed, that he held in his hand, occasionally glancing down at the weapon with a nervousness and fear that seemed to indicate that he was unsure if he should possess such a thing or not. Jiraiya simply stared, his eyes wide, and resisted the urge to let his jaw drop. This....this kid, this bumpkin from the middle of shitcreek nowhere was the one?!! This farmer's son who probably couldn't find Japan on a map, who most likely didn't know religions outside of Christianity existed, let alone the history of Shinto religion...this completely unremarkable creature was supposed to lead them........ Yet, in his mind and heart, Jiraiya felt it to be true. It was the way of magic. One of it's biggest and most frustrating mysteries: Great power always found it's way to those that never sought it. Sighing and resigning himself to this nigh-impossible reality, Jiraiya crossed the street, keeping his distance behind the group, watching the kid with the sword..... "The Once and Future King...." he mused quietly. "Why couldn't he have just been by himself? Would have made things so much easier...." |

"Yay!" Adara had a big smile on her face when she heard that she could be able to go trick or treating. Looking up at her mother gleefully, she smiled at Adara and walked off to give her a costume. Eventually Sakura had chosen a costume that Adara seemed to really like. She had big smile on her face as she held her bag and nodded her head. "Now, all you need to do is say trick or treat okay Adara?" Adara nodded her head as she felt her mother ruffle her hair so that she can be able to hide the fox ears. Adara seemed to be incredibly enthusiastic as she walked with a group of kids as she smiled sweetly. Watching one of the doors open, Adara said in a very cheerful voice. "Trick or treat!" As the kids each got candy, Adara looked at what she had been given with what seemed to be curious to her. It was something called bubble gum. Unwrapping it, she noticed that it was a bright pink color. It smelled kind of sweet, but wasn't sure what it is. Putting it into the bag again, she walked over to the next house where she had received another candy. Adara looked at them as she blinked a couple of times. "Excuse me, what are these?" The child looked at the hybrid and said,"They're circus peanuts." Adara blinked a couple of times as the child said that. They looked like nuts, but they were orange in color. Clearly it wasn't a real nut, but it was a very curious thing to have. Eventually she had found herself many chocolate candies that seemed to make her very happy. The scent of those candies brought a smile to her face and she could not wait before she could try it. Eventually she had continued to smile as she continued to trick or treat. Eventually she had been given something called a rice krispy treat. It looked like rice had been used for the creation, but it didn't look like rice. She felt something sticky on her fingers and licked them. It was a very sweet taste, almost like pure sugar in a way. But she wasn't sure if she should eat it. It seemed like the kind of food used for Inari's shrine. "Maybe I can put this there," she said while curiously looking at the square. Eventually she sniffed the air until she saw a tall dark hair boy and smiled up at him. She almost seemed to be very happy since she could be able to interact without having to worry about changing in the middle of a sentence. "Hi!" |

(If Jiraiya didn't know that Rish was around - busy as he was with the act of detecting and sensing - then she certainly had no idea herself. So, the spirit fox basically came to approach this area from a completely different angle. And since there's absolutely no way for any of them to know what's going on back home, Rish was feeling in pretty high spirits. What she saw was this... A group of humans, ordinary humans. Well, one of them wasn't all THAT ordinary. He had a sword that felt...spiffy. There wasn't anything else in this town that she could feel right now with that amount of magic-content. So, for not ever having seen THIS mystical sword, it had to be the one. It was being held by a rather ordinary human, which put Rish in the grins as she took off her mask. It was perfect. She loved humans. At least, she liked them more than a number of kitsune, more than her brother did, at least. Seeing that Adara had already confronted him, she decided to play on this. Right now, the spirit fox looked completely human-normal, save for her beguiling eyes.) Rish: This could be fun. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Elsewhere, more on the outskirts of town if nothing else, Daggoth came to a spot where a feeling had led him, a feeling and a smell like ions and particles burning. You know... A smell that requires a very subtle nose to pick up. And then, only to recognize it if it had been encountered before... The void kitsune squinted his eyes as he looked around, and finally saw the shimmer of a well-hidden object. He walked by it, saying...) Daggoth: What are you doing here? (One of the cloaked figures spoke.) "We're not doing anything. Observation is the order, and nothing further." Daggoth: You're jeopardizing things by following us. Don't. (And a different voice spoke up next to the first one.) "We're just making sure other things don't." Daggoth: If I could find you- "You only knew what to look for. I saw your nose. Not many outside are own are that keen. Now, leave us alone." Daggoth: ...fine. Don't come to me if trouble occurs. I'm in disguise. "Anubis didn't have fox-ears." Daggoth: Dammit! (He left them alone, realizing that he'd left the others for a little too longer than he wanted. Heading back, he kept his senses open and only got the vague impressions, much-due to the distance at hand. Of course, he could just wander around and keep his eyes out. The chances of there being trouble were more than doubling right now...) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Rish looked at the katana carefully, from a distance. Yes, this very much might work out. Approaching in a simple and calm manner, Rish pretended as though she were actually seeking out Adara, who was already there. It was therefore easy to make this play into conversation with the human who had apparently been chosen. They could work it out from there.) Rish: Hey, Adara. Having fun so far? Who's your new friend? (The sooner they got him on speaking terms, even trusting terms, the better.) |

Jiraiya sighed and facepalmed in resigned disgust. True, he didn't know when it would be best to make contact with this boy, this King. However it seemed stupid to approach him in such an open place. Regardless, at least the dead was done. Hastily casting a spell, King's friends continued to walk unconcernedly, not even realizing their companion had stopped or other people had come up. "Er...hello." the boy blinked, looking at Adara and then looking over at Rish, his eyes growing a bit bigger seeing the weapons Rish had with her. First this crazy sword and now crazy people... "Name's Simon." the boy answered, eyeing both of them as well as Jiraiya, who was coming up fast to at least be involved in the situation. If Simon had been suspicious at these two people whom he'd never seen in his tiny town before, the appearance Jiraiya had borrowed put him on Defcon Four. Simon knew that particular actor was far older than Jiraiya's current appearance. "I'd be guessin' you guys want this sword?" Simon asked, holding up the blade, which pulsed with energy that matched Simon's. "If so, go ahead and take it if you can. It won't stay outta my sight." he finished, looking down at the sword with amazement at it's behavior. "Even if we wanted to take it, we couldn't for the same reason it won't leave your side." Jiraiya remarked, folding his arms. "But....why won't the damn thing just leave me alone? It fell outta the sky while I was harvesting earlier." "Well, to put it bluntly: it's magic, and it's got a brain of it's own and it's chosen you to be it's owner. Congratulations: you now have a destiny." "A....a destiny? but I'm just-" BOOOOOOM! looking towards the sound of the explosion, Jiraiya began to sniff the air, his face twisting into a revolted look as he did so. The smell, no, the stench was absolutely unmistakeable. It was a foul odor, a mixture of burnt rubber, blood, and a dark musty cave. There was no doubt about it.... "Oni..." Jiraiya growled, sensing a small group of them back at the Pizza joint everyone had left only minutes before. Either they'd gotten very lucky and beaten the brutes to the punch, or they wanted to know what a group of high-powered Kits were doing in the middle of nowhere. Either way, they spread out, terrorizing the little town. "We're gonna have to take these meatheads down before we can get out of here!" Jiraiya yelled, changing back to his ero-sennin form, causing Simon to look all the more confused. "Wait a minute!" Simon yelled, looking startled. "you guys seem harmless enough. what's going on now?! Why's all this happening?!" Jiraiya merely looked at him for a moment before deciding on the truth. "It's happening because of your Destiny. That sword in your hand is almost a thousand years old. It's an Imperial treasure. In other words: it belongs to royalty, to a King or Queen. Always. It seems it's chosen you to be a King." "But-" "We'll deal with it later, kid. Right now we got a bunch of hairy red apes to dispatch." Jiraiya remarked, flipping frantically through a pocket-sized book, hoping to find something...SOMETHING had to live wild in these parts that they could use..... |

"Oh hi!" Adara had a smile on her face as she looked at Rish. Looking at her for a little bit, she then opened up her bag to show her the candy that she got. "This is a very interesting holiday, but I do have a question." Looking with a curious expression, she rummaged through her bag until she had pulled out her query. It was the rice krispy square that she had been given. If anyone who would know about what Inari liked, it was more than likely Rish. Holding up the square to Rish, she had a look of innocence in her eyes as she spoke. "I got this and I was told it was a "rice krispy square". I wasn't sure if this was made of rice since it doesn't really look like rice. But still, I was wondering if I should give this to Inari. I mean, it would be nice to have something sweet every now and then right?" She then turned around and looked at the boy with a smile on her face. "It's nice to meet you Simon! My name's Adara!" She was going to say more, but then she heard the explosion. Dropping her candy back into the bag, she immediately ducked to the ground. "Burn..." Sakura's tail began to swish in the air as she walked towards the red apes. She didn't have the time or patience to read. And more importantly she had to worry about the welfare of her daughter. Pulling out one of her handguns, she aimed it at one of the apes as she started to form a sphere of energy. Not sure what kind of power the oni had, she was going to stick with the non elemental Nova Shot. She fired off one sphere of energy as she looked at the Oni with a glare. She was going to do what she needed to do to protect her family and friends. |

"I got this and I was told it was a "rice krispy square". I wasn't sure if this was made of rice since it doesn't really look like rice. But still, I was wondering if I should give this to Inari. I mean, it would be nice to have something sweet every now and then right?" (This made the spirit fox genuinely smile. Adara's open-honest way of viewing the world always intrigued her. She was all the parts of Sakura and Ray that she liked. Mostly Sakura, in her opinion, but that was just her way of teasing the wolf. The rice krispy square was PERFECT for the god of rice. Absolutely perfect, and funny. In the meantime, the boy introduced himself, and seemed to understand that this was all about the sword, though not for the right reasons. Apparently, it had come to him, as Rish suspected. Jiraiya knew, of course, more than Rish did, but she was a quick study. The relationship between sword and master was symbiotic. It couldn't be helped.) "Well, to put it bluntly: it's magic, and it's got a brain of it's own and it's chosen you to be it's owner. Congratulations: you now have a destiny." (Rish gave the seven-tail a raised eyebrow at the last comment. It sounded like he was... Oh, Inari-dammit, HE WAS! He made himself look like Mark Hamill before and now he was referencing that movie series! To a humble farm-boy! He's just a poor boy, from a poor family! Spare him his life from this monstrosity! Gaaah! The fox groaned slightly as soon as she got it.) Rish: Jiraiya, that was terri- BOOOOOOM!!! Rish: -ble? (An explosion accompanied with a gush of irregular scent interrupted their repartee and now Rish - and Daggoth, from the other section of town he stood in - looked in that direction, taking in that smell. She had never been involved in the war. None of her family were. And, in fact, she wasn't as outgoing and travel-crazy as Daggoth either. Nevertheless, you only have to smell one Oni to know their scent. They're putrid demons, unclean as unclean-can-be. Amidst the sudden damage and fire leaping up, Rish saw some hulking inhuman forms. She glanced at Simon.) Rish: Sorry, but we're not harmless. We just have more restraint. (And that restraint was going out the window about now. Like the man said, it's CLOBBERING TIME! Er, wait. No. Well, he said they had to handle these guys first before they caused too much damage. Sakura had already gotten started. Rish put her hand into her side-pouch. You know, it's funny. Jiraiya mocks the ninja anime, but she was the one with actual ninja equipment. There just wasn't any funny hand-signals like you're signaling for the hearing-impaired involved. At the closest Oni-target - the one Sakura had already fired on - Rish threw a few shurikens at them. The trick here, though, was that they were not simple bladed throwing-devices. They were changed with her spiritual force-waves, which made them like torpedoes with shaped charges, effectively. They had to work at this fast, though. The ones here were NOT the only ones around!) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (At the time of the boom, Daggoth had stopped cold and looked around. That smell... He actually hadn't gotten a whiff like that in 150 years, but he recognized it like it were yesterday. Oni were hear. He smelled them, and he had a feeling of power from at least two directions. Then, he heard a scream nearby and changed that assessment to three. Daggoth headed over to a different spot around the corner of a house where there was a single Oni and a human as well. The human was the girl in the witch outfit that had confronted him earlier. The Oni had her by the leg and she was both shocked and horrified as she saw Daggoth.) "Please...help me..." Daggoth: Alright. But just this once. (Another shocker as he whipped away the mask and the fox-ears didn't go away with it. Of course, the Oni sensed right off that he was a kitsune, but it didn't matter to him. Cracking his knuckles on one hand, shadow-void energy formed and swirled around Daggoth's right arm. The energy took the shape of swirling blades, as in the Feast of Shadow Claws. He leapt right at the creature in order to punch at him and unleash the dark claws at its body at point-blank range. The cutting damage would well-remind the beast of why you don't mess with foxes.) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Meanwhile, the area of the pizza joint...the Oni had been sensed here too, but what exactly was going on? Well, none of Jiraiya's team were here to find out, but there were...presences, watchful eyes. Did the monsters see them? Maybe, maybe not. Two cloaked light kitsune were discreetly in the area. A bit far off now, but coming closer to investigate. Well, maybe not to investigate. Maybe to...clean house, so to speak. The three-tail, Daggoth, had found them earlier. If their presence COULD be found, maybe it was time for some active duty...) |

"Dammit..." Jiraiya grumbled, slamming the book shut. "Not a thing to work with around here." He let Sakura and Rish tend to the nearest Oni, knowing that they'd be able to handle it easily, as even now the Oni had faltered for a moment due to the damage. However it wasn't yet over, for if the big ugly brute had been unhappy before, he was certainly pissed off now as he roared and continued to close the distance between himself and Rish and Sakura. "Only four of 'em, but if we let even one go they'll level the town." Jiraiya mused, sensing the one that Daggoth was currently dealing with as well as two more that were lumbering their way unopposed. He dug in a pouch, producing a small object that looked like a whistle. Putting it to his lips he blew hard, a loud, deep note issuing from the thing as though someone was playing a viking horn instead of a whistle....... ---------------------------- The sound reverberated through a large mansion-like house, filling every nook and cranny with the sound. Every room was invaded with the obtrusive signal as it finally found it's way to a place that Adara might have liked....it looked like a combination of a library, living-room, and a child's play-room. The latter was not surprising as there were three young people scattered about the room. They perked up when they heard the sound. "Shit.." said one, a boy with a mane of spiky black hair, throwing down the portable gaming device he'd been playing in disgust. "Don't curse!" another nearby ordered, this one a little brown-haired girl, complete with a stuffed animal in her arms. She blinked as she heard the sound too and her face fell. "Not me...." The third figure got up from it's place in the corner, adjusting large glasses and putting a big book aside. The rather burly child made his way to the door, not saying anything to the other two. Making his way to the doors of the room, he pushed them open, disappearing in a green light... --------------------------------------------- The note lasted only for a moment, not counting the reverberations in people's skulls. Looking up, Jiraiya smiled as he saw a portal open, a large hammer-like weapon falling to earth, landing, handle impaled in the earth, in front of him. "About time you got here, karn." Jiraiya said, striding over and taking up the massive weapon, swinging it and settling it over his shoulders. "Sorry....Tou-san." the weapon answered for everyone to hear. "Not a problem kiddo." Jiraiya smiled, looking at the two Oni who were closing in on them from the other side. "Well come on, then!" he grinned. "I prefer a straight fight to all this sneakin' around!" |

"Then they will not leave this town in one piece..." As Sakura talked to Jiraiya, the red mark on her neck began to pulse with a dim light. She had been holding back her anger tremendously. Though she didn't disagree with the seven tailed kitsune that they could be able to level the whole town in a matter of moments, she could just as easily do it as well out of anger with the power of Macha. Keeping her rage in check, she moved slowly to the Oni she had shot at and started to walk forward. As the Oni loomed over the blonde haired girl, her hands began to burn brightly with fire as she looked at the creature with altered eyes. "Meteor shot..." her voice became soft as she formed three fireballs and began to condense them to the point that there was only a single concentrated fireball. Picking the fireball up with her right hand, she fired it right at the Oni. "Burn within my flames..." "Hm?" Adara's ears perked up when she heard a sound. Moving away from the frenzy, she found herself in some kind of house. Looking around, she began to sniff the air curiously to see if there were any other Oni nearby. Once she realized that there were no Oni nearby, she was starting to feel better. Eventually she saw the room and smiled happily. Her purple tail started to swish around as she then looked at the people who seemed to be taking residence in the room. "Hello! Um...what is this place," she asked innocently as she held her bag filled with candy. Her eyes held a brightness as she continued to look around with a curious manner. |

(Four Oni, two of them without immediate dance partner. Well, they seemed to have taken upon themselves to attack Jiraiya, who was hefting a taking hammer right about now. Honestly, Rish was a little confused by that one, but there was no time to handle it. He was a seven-tail, so he'd be fine...right? Okay, maybe it was because she hadn't really fought many Oni, but there was that pause for concern that maybe two lumbering ogres were a problem. Before she thought to act on it, though...someone else did. From the direction of the pizza joint, Jiraiya would find a web made of light flying towards one of the Oni, and a beam of the same kind of light firing towards the other. It would not take much of a leap to recognize that these involved fox magic, from white foxes. Let's just say that the ones responsible for this assistance regarded their orders to observe as fluid in places. They had not been told they couldn't shoot Oni. Rish smirked, and got back to the Oni that Sakura had been fighting.) Rish: Those two are really something else. (Sakura had blasted the Oni with a rather potent attack, but since they weren't taking any chances here, Rish decided to add in her own strike soon after hers. The Oni had only been wounded by the spiritually-enhanced shurikens she'd thrown, which made it a bit resistant to the ninja-like techniques. Very well. More power to the fox powers, then. There seemed to be a slight wind as spirit energy came off of her in wisps of fog. Rish's ears manifested, as well as her tails, as energy coursed into her left hand. She was using a stronger technique, one that could render alot of things here as collateral. No worries. She knew how to handle this. In the event that this actually blasted right THROUGH the bastard, she decided to angle her attack upwards, to miss buildings and people. Therefore, Rish leapt forward into a somersault to fire a Spirit Blast up at the large Oni's head at the neckline. If her aim and the strength of her attack was worth its salt, we should be seeing its head pop off like a champagne cork...shortly before disintegrating from the sheer strength of the blast.) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Meanwhile...Daggoth was annoyed. True, it happened alot, but this was one of those irritations at inconvenience. If not for Rish and her comments about humans, he would have formed a naked singularity and sucked these demons into it painfully by now. Resistance or not, you do NOT live through a black hole technique, not unless you're powered by the Void. However, as it stood, the problem of hurting other people and their property was now an issue for him. Rather than writing off humanity, he now had to give them the benefit of the doubt, so that meant no Void Destruction Sphere...while this witch-girl sat glaring at the scene. She was in shock, naturally. This was Normalsville. They had no experience with Oni, kitsune, or otherwise. The hulking demon had been a shock, the fact that he was a fox-man had made it worse, and now his fight had just made her lock up. Great... More to the point, the Oni hadn't died of a hundred claw-wounds to the system. It staggered back, injured and angered. It swung its fists, those oversized hams, trying to strike or grab purchase of him. He'd been glanced by the first blow, being so up-close-and-personal, but had avoided the ground-reshaping, swooshing fists of the Oni. Suddenly, he backflipped as it crunched the ground again.) Daggoth: Chansu! ((Chance!)) (Suddenly...boot to the head! The Oni grabbed its face around the nose area. Something had cracked... Daggoth smiled as his right arm went aflame with a creepy blackish-violet energy. His dirty-golden eyes seemed to gleam more fiercely, or was that due to how it seemed darker around Daggoth now, who grinned with fox-like teeth in his mouth.) Daggoth: Mohaya omaesan yuigon hinagata mai kaen. ((Now, you shall sample my flame.)) (He raised his right hand, and...it was like an explosion of black-and-violet flames shooting out of it! The whole entire Oni would be engulfed in the life-consuming darkness of Kegare Kitsune-Bi, Daggoth's adapted fire technique, the fruit of his basic training and his elemental understanding of his magic. Like a tree reduced to rotten deadwood or a man becoming a stinky corpse, the Oni would be reduced to mere remains, a disgusting slag-heap. Death is rarely pretty.) |

Jiraiya smiled as the battle began to wrap up. Rish and Sakura and Daggoth had killed their opponents, the Oni going down with earth-shattering crashes. Now only two enemies remained to be dispatched. Something which Jiraiya took great pleasure in doing... Yet before he could do so, the beam of light pierced one of the remaining two, leaving a hole clean through his heart, causing the beast to fall. The other roared in rage, speeding up his lumbering gait to close the distance towards his enemy. Alas this only lasted a short time, as the golden net of light caught up to him, encasing the beast within it's confines, becoming little more than an angry, snarling, glowing ball still flying at Jiraiya. "Look out sports fans," Jiraiya grinned, swinging his massive hammer over his shoulder and assuming the stance of a batter at home-plate. With a mighty swing, the netted Oni and the head of Jiraiya's massive hammer connected, causing the Oni to let loose a mighty roar of pain before it went flying into the sunset. "that one's heading over the fences." Jiraiya finished with a grin. Simon, meanwhile, had followed Adara into the building. He had no clue what was going on and understandingly was rather disturbed. He wasn't a fighter and that was that. His father had always taught him that fighting was a last resort, and the few times he'd resorted to fisticuffs, he'd been on the loosing side of the conflict. As these creatures had fists bigger than his head, Simon was not very keen to be on the loosing end of this particular battle. He listened to Adara and wondered at the girl...how could she be so calm and collected at all this? It made so little sense. How could anyone not be shocked and confused by all this. To the residents of the town, it was simply monsters blowing up a building. But to him it was more...so very much more. So much more to try to understand, to take in, to accept as reality. Shape-shifting creatures, sentient weapons, a Royal throne waiting for him....none of it made sense in his mind, worse still it was all so overwhelming....How he wished he could wake up from this dream... Unfortunately his wake-up call came with the shattering of glass of the plate-glass window and a roar of anger and pain. The Oni that had seemingly fallen to the golden beam of light had actually survived and struggled to the nearest opponents: Simon and Adara. For a moment everyone stood, the moment frozen in time as it engraved itself upon everyone's memories: the bloodied, raging figure of the Oni as it loomed in the shattered opening, the look of pure terror on the humans gathered, Adara's curious expression at a situation she didn't fully understand, and Simon's shock and disbelief. Staring at the hulking figure, Simon uttered the words he'd meant to say to Jiraiya before: "....w-why me?" No answer seemed to come as the seconds stretched into eternity...however suddenly Simon felt warmth spread through his fingertips, creeping it's way through his veins, a deep golden aura spreading across his body, covering him from head to toe, dripping off of him in sheets, the excess forming dozens of glittering foxtails. It was then that he heard a voice speak... "There are some kinds of magic even we cannot understand, successor...." a disembodied voice whispered in his ear. The voice sounded immensely old, but wise. It also sounded odd...like multiple voices speaking as one. "It is as Jiraiya said. It is your fate. We will assist you this one time...but...try to learn to stand on your own, successor." Simon had no more twitched than one of the tails had shot out from it's place, forming into a great gleaming clawed hand that wrapped it's fingers around the Oni's throat, causally snapping the beast's neck so hard that the head swiveled upon it's shoulders, spinning like a top and wobbling before falling to the ground, completely and cleanly separated from it's body, the latter falling to the ground with a dull thud and the cracking of broken glass. Simon could bear no more of this...this madness. It was all quite simply too much for him to take in. His brain seemed already full to bursting with what he'd seen, and now he'd just seen more. More of the impossible. It was too much for him.... Swaying for a moment, Simon hit the ground on his bottom, his eyes wide with shock as the golden aura slowly faded. He wanted nothing more than to curl up and rock back and forth and pray to the heavens above that this was a dream. But the cold floor underneath his legs and the dull pain of the shards of glass pressing into his body told him this was no dream... Moving over to the body of the now-decapitated Oni, Jiraiya surveyed their new King.... "Try not to think about it..." he advised, looking at Simon. "It's how people go crazy, thinking about it. Trying to figure it out. It's magic: trust it and go forward." |

"Wait, where's Adara?" Sakura looked around and began to smell the air. Something didn't seem right. Adara was not anywhere nearby and she didn't see her in the battle. She must have been able to slip past the Oni. As she began to worry about her daughter, the red mark on her neck began to glow with a dim red light. She could not think that the worst happened to Adara. She probably was separated from the group and immediately picked up her scent. It seemed to be coming from the house in the distance. Checking how many rounds she had left in her gun, she snapped the magazine back into her gun and immediately ran up to the building to see if Adara was okay. Adara had watched Simon with concern in her eyes. She was trying to think of something comforting to say to him but immediately sniffed the air and caught the scent of the Oni. Her ears folded back from her head as she aimed her gun at the large creature. She wasn't sure how strong her gun would be against a creature like that, but at the least she did have her choker to fall back on if the worst were to happen. Turning to look at Simon, she watched the golden light that seemed to emit around his body. She had been usually attracted to things that shined brightly like lightning bolts, so the golden light was naturally something she would look at first. When she heard the neck snap, she turned to see the Oni on the ground. Watching the creature, she had done her best to resist the urge to gnaw at the corpse. It would have caused greater strain on a psyche that had been pushed to a limit. Walking over to Simon, the mismatched eyes of the hybrid kitsune held her hand out to him as she gave him a kind smile. Her mother had just witnessed her daughter perform this kind gesture and smiled to herself. Though her mother didn't know it yet, Adara had the kind of feelings Simon had in the past. However, it was less about learning about her heritage and more about turning into the Thunderwolf at such a young age. She could still remember the night her mother found her under a tree in her new form shivering in the cold and whimpering out of fear and confusion. She didn't even know what was happening to her body or even her mind. Perhaps with the guidance she had been given from her parents in the future, she could be able to help out Simon. In time she knew he would eventually understand. But it didn't hurt to have people to help you on your way there. |

"Wh-wh-what...?" Daggoth: I think you'd rather not know. (So, the Oni had been reduced to a pile of nasty staff before him, the fire attack having been successful. And by his sense of it, the rest of the Oni were expertly put down, including by an invisible help from the pair that he'd found earlier. But now that that was over, he still had a slight problem. There was a human witness that he'd saved the life of, only he really thought this was gonna be a pain to answer for, so he decided to handle it in the traditional fashion. He stepped closer to the girl and pointed a finger at her. Her eyes snapped to attention as his eyes fixed directly on them. Daggoth began to implant commands.) Daggoth: There is no demon or monster of any sort. "There are...no monsters..." Daggoth: You're tired from a party, so take a nap. "I'm so tired..." (He turned then, and walked away.) Daggoth: Happy Halloween... "Happy...Hallow...een...." (She collapsed. Daggoth headed off to Rish and the others. Hypnosis was alot of fun.) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (And the crowd goes WILD!! The Oni trapped in the net was far FAR flung off into the distance, doing that Smash Brothers thing where the enemy goes TING and winks out of sight. Didn't matter, though. Anaku smirked invisibly to herself. Even if it survived the fall somehow, that net would burn it through unless something intervened or its supernatural strength busted it out. Neither was likely, though if a strangely-charred Oni DID make an appearance, later, she would make a note to strengthen the nets. Rish laughed at the scene, having ended the other Oni herself. That was pretty fucking awesome, really. Jiraiya was definitely getting on her good list now. Though, when the other suddenly GOT UP, Rish almost went into a panic-run. That's where Simon AND Adara were! Before she could get there, though, she felt ALOT of power suddenly, and an...appendage reached out and killed the Oni with a quick twist of the neck! That was...the power of their new king? Maybe you, in the audience, wouldn't think much of it while it did only snap and Oni's neck, but the output was something that Rish felt, and it was ENORMOUS.) Rish: My mother has nine tails and she's an expert at energy, and STILL he has more than that... (Things appeared to be calming down now, and Rish saw Daggoth heading over now, apparently smug about something. She didn't even want to know what it was. So, instead of asking, she let him talk.) Daggoth: What I miss? Rish: You... Don't tell me you didn't see- Daggoth: Just kidding. I had to put down an ogre first, but yeah. So...that's our king? (He gestured over to Simon, just as Jiraiya was giving him some advice.) Rish: Yes, that's him alright. Think we can keep him in one piece? Daggoth: I hope not. That show sucked. Rish: Daggoth!! (Imagine the kitsune glaring at her brother with fox ears straight up and three gray tails frizzed with annoyance. Daggoth just lost it, laughing at the bad pun. Then, after a moment, he and Rish calmed down, Rish reverting to human form in totality.) Daggoth: In all seriousness, I don't think we'll have to worry as much now. I spotted a couple of supporters earlier. Rish: Yes, I noticed. We're one body short because of them. (The situation appeared to be a bit calmer, with the rest of them gathered now. So...Rish decided to interrupt the master-to-student talk for just a moment with a little bit of common sense. Daggoth stood by silently. She was the better human relations kind of girl anyway.) Rish: All things aside, we have to get back, right? As in get him out of any place the Oni could show? The only reason THEY got here was because of us, all of us. Best thing for our mission and this town...is to leave. (She gave off an understanding look to the boy-who-would-be-king.) Rish: I'm sure you have alot of friends here. If you're worried what they'll think or if they might still be in danger, I'm sure we can help with that. |

Simon looked up at Jiraiya, realizing the wisdom in his words. It seemed to help....not thinking about it. Somehow it made things better. Things simply were what they were and that was that. Smiling a bit, he took Adara's hand and got up, his hand instinctively closing around the sword as he did so.... "Thank you...all of you." He said, looking around at the foxes. "You've saved my home, such as it was...." "...I should at least tell my folks what's going on-" he began, thinking about Rish's words. But before he could do anything, a farmer appeared in the doorway. He looked bruised and a bit bloody, but he seemed unfazed by the headless body on the floor, looking directly at Simon. "Mr. Kent?" Simon asked, looking at the man. "What's wrong? You don't normally come into town unless there's trouble..." "Came lookin' for you, boy." the man called Kent muttered, moving over and shifting the chew in his mouth. "Yer parents were mighty worried...first a big explosion here in town, an' then somethin' hits their house, blows it up good. Thank the gods yer ol' man was out in the fields and yer maw was passin' the time with my wife." "The house....something....hit it?" Simon said, his eyes wide. "Yeap. Buildin's almost totaled I'd reckon." Kent mused, scratching the stubble on his chin. "But we'll rebuild. Yer folks can stay with Ma an' I till then. You....you go on yer business with these folks. I'll tell yer parents yer safe." "Thank you, Mr. Kent..." Simon sighed, looking relieved at the thought that his family was still in one piece. Jiraiya, however, didn't look so happy. He cringed when he heard that something had hit the farmhouse, being fairly sure that that 'something' was a snarling, angry, thousand-pound ball of angry demon. "You seem awfully calm about all this, Mr. Kent." Jiraiya remarked, still trying to get over the embarrassment of the unintentional blunder and work out what to do next. Farmer Kent simply looked at him and smiled a bit under the John Deere hat. "Ever seen a boy fall from the stars in a rocket, son?" the farmer queried. Jiraiya had to admit this was something even he hadn't seen. "After that, you get used to strange things...." ------------------------------------------ Walking into the street with Mr. Kent, Jiraiya and his party were greeted by what looked to be an old military APC: little more than a large flatbed truck with a tented roof and benches in back. Items like bags of feed and seed, as well as mechanical parts and other things littered the back of the truck, as if Kent had just come into town for a supply shipment. "I can give ya a lift to Kansas City..." Kent remarked, opening the tailgate of the truck. "But that's about all I can do. Nation's got checkpoints on every flight goin' outta KC. Y'all may be able to pass yerselves off as metas...god knows ya got powers like 'em...but Simon there...yer gonna have to get creative." "For once on this trip, I actually have a plan for that." Jiraiya remarked as they piled into the back of the truck. It actually took a surprisingly short time to get to the city limits. With police and state-troopers busy in the city itself, speed-limits became mere suggestions as to how fast one should go. Simon kept an eye on the road, sighing as they passed the sign at the city limits, a blur of lettering at that speed, save for the name of the breadbasket hamlet: Smallville. "So what happens if we get into more trouble?" Simon asked, mostly to take his mind off the thought of leaving home so abruptly. "IF we get into more trouble? HAH!" Jiraiya laughed, lighting up a long pipe he'd kept stored in a pack. "We'll figure something out. You got a ninja with you for chrissakes. I don't think much that we come up against will be a problem." "I've got a bad feeling about this..." Simon remarked darkly. "heh, never traveled much, have you?" Jiraiya smiled, removing the pipe from his mouth and blowing smoke out his nose. Simon shook his head. "'Well you know what my uncle Bilbo told me...'" Jiraiya mused. "'It's a dangerous business Frodo, stepping out your door. You step onto the road..and if you don't keep your feet, who knows where they'll take you?'" |

A kind gaze and a supporting hand... Adara knew she didn't have much when it came to either fighting experience, knowledge of the kitsune or even a full blown force of nature. But what she did have was a shoulder to fall back on. Even as he is the king, she knew that being able to understand everything that is going on was a long and hard trip. It was the same for her werewolf portion of her body, and it would more than likely fall with the young boy. Keeping a calm expression, the kitsune girl's tail swished around as the parents spoke to Simon and Jiraya. She didn't know much about whatever the Nation was, but it couldn't be good if they have security checkpoints and they would have to go on a truck. At first she wasn't really sure what to think of it, but Adara began to giggle as she sat down on the truck bed. The wind went through her raven hair and made her ears twitch. The kitsune girl smiled happily as she stuck her head out of the truck bed as she continued to feel the wind through her hair. Sakura on the other hand still had been waiting patiently while watching her daughter with a smile on her face. She clearly was enjoying herself while doing what she could to help out the would be king. Her red fox tail ran along the bed of the truck as she hummed to herself. |

"Thank you...all of you. You've saved my home, such as it was...." (Daggoth shrugged at this. In his eyes, stupid content people should be left alone if they don't harm anyone. That's...about the limit of his understanding here, really. Rish may have curbed his humanity-destroying tendencies, but you can't take the mischievous fox out of him. Rish said nothing. She was fairly use to gratitude from humans. However, this was all interrupted by an individual...known as Kent. He told them that something came out of the sky and...crushed the house.) "The house....something....hit it?" Rish: Uh oh. Daggoth: What? Rish: You remember that ummm...help? Daggoth: Yes. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Farther off, in the general area of where the farm was, a pair of cloaked forms - large foxes, apparently - were taking a look at the impact zone...) "Remind me to strengthen the bonding on the Light Webs. I'd intended to slice that demon into chunks." "Okay." "If it gets up, burn it. Okay?" "Oh, with pleasure. Hee hee hee hee!" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Daggoth: Ugh...those two... Rish: Scold them later. We have work to do. (The three-tails weren't the only ones that realized what went down over there, though they tried to hide the fact in their hushed conversation. They let the talk with Mr. Kent go on as he said something about a rocket from outer space. Wait, what? That...got their attention for a minute. A bit later, they were standing at an APC with Kent offering them a lift. Daggoth was still annoyed at not being able to transport his way, but he didn't say anything this time. So, they were to play the part of illegal immigrants, only it was Simon that was the illegal one.) "For once on this trip, I actually have a plan for that." Rish: As do I. Daggoth: And me. Though, mine depends more on if those two are still following us... (And in fact, they were. Not that you could see them, of course, but the orders of the two foxes were to observe the mission and make sure that nothing interferes with it. They were safeguards, and so they were actually following...in light form...ready to appear in the flesh as necessary, but otherwise still out of sight.) "So what happens if we get into more trouble?" "IF we get into more trouble? HAH! We'll figure something out. You got a ninja with you for chrissakes. I don't think much that we come up against will be a problem." Rish: I hope, by that, you mean me, Jiraiya. Because you're nothing more than a cosplayer. (Certain animes that spout ninja themes are not actually ninjas by the spirit fox's standards. Simon then said he had a bad feeling about this, which either makes you think Aliens or Star Wars, and it's very unlikely that he'd seen either. Instead, Jiraiya spoke in the words of Tolkien...which did not help. Both of the three-tails had to remember not to take Jiraiya anywhere close to seriously unless he was on the job. So, with that in mind, they decided to get on it.) Rish: Now then, I don't know the extent of what the Nation of True Humanity has set along the way. We can assume that they have some method of determining metas, of course. The easiest way to handle it is with illusions. Daggoth, you said you had a plan? Daggoth: Just this. We're being followed and the ones doing the following are cloaked. If we leave it to them, they'll give our King enough light to blot out the sun. If anyone has any further ideas, let's have 'em. |

"Of course I meant you." Jiraiya retorted. "I just use this form as an excuse anyway." Smoking his pipe a bit more, Jiraiya thought over the options...certainly blinding out the local populace was an amusing idea, but not exactly something he wanted to do if he could avoid it. Smallville wasn't the only place that had Dragon Nests. "We could use illusions....but we're not the only people who use magic..." he mused, rubbing his chin before finally smiling a bit and standing up. "guess that means we use our original plan...get over here, kid." Simon, wondering what in god's name was going to happen now, sighed and got up, having no choice but to obey... "Now hold still." "Hey! what's with the-? is that paint?!" "Just shut up and hold still!" "AGH! What-?! I'm your King and you treat me like this?!" "not my fault the Nation doesn't like magic." "AAH! That's cold! Oh come on, don't use googly-eyes, that looks cheap!" "Fine, blow our budget..." The final product was, understandably, absurd. Simon was no longer a slightly-tanned son of the american heartland, but, to some people's ideas, a commonplace newsreel meta-human: Blue skin, antennae (synthetic), and an extra eye glued to his forehead. Of course not ALL of him was painted. Jiraiya sincerely doubted that anyone would really tell him to strip down to confirm that he was blue EVERYWHERE. "That'll work just fine." Jiraiya said, settling down and taking a puff from his pipe. Simon stayed silent, sitting down gingerly on his seat, either too embarrassed or unhappy to speak. "Relax, kid." Jiraiya consoled him, despite the grin on his face. "Sometimes old tricks are the best." Shortly afterward, they entered the city: a shining, glittering place compared to the flatlands all around it. Getting out in a downtown location, Kent gave them a brief nod and drove off, leaving them in the heart of a city owned by meta-humans.... "Well, there's the airport." Simon noted, eyeing a large piece of modern architecture behind which one could see passenger-jets being taxied into place. |

"If worse comes to worse, this always will be useful magic or not." As Jiraiya spoke, Sakura casually slipped behind her back and pulled out her customized energy shotgun. It may not be the most subtle of things, but even if the opponent was magical, something could be said about having four barrels of energy pointing straight at the body of her opponent. She also had her guns to use as well, but her energy weapon always had been her old standby. Not to mention she also had the Dragonhand. The magical fire could be useful against the enemies when she needed to deal with a big enough crowd. She then turned to look at her daughter and moved in closer. As she smiled sweetly, the blonde haired kitsune ruffled her raven hair and nodded her head. Her daughter didn't have the luxury of creating illusions, so she needed to be creative with her disguises. As Adara watched her mother, a blush was on her face as she watched Simon get worked on by Jiraiya. She tried not to look too many times, but every now and then she did have a peek. Eventually she blinked a couple of times as she looked at his new form. She couldn't help but to cover her mouth as the hybrid tried her best to keep herself from giggling too much. For some reason, she just simply wanted to bat the antenna around playfully. As they pulled over, Adara looked at the airport and tilted her head with curiousity. She was not really sure about what this place was, but it did have a lot of interesting scents to it. |

"Of course I meant you. I just use this form as an excuse anyway." (Cue the smirk from the spirit fox. After all, she know how Japanese anime worked. They take a very loose idea from old literature and try to make it into something more than it is. But Rish had read about the real Jiraiya, and was surprised she and him never bumped shoulders before. Still, as the other fox said, he was just using the shape, form, and >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Never doubt the keen eyes of a fox, especially those of the two white foxes still following them from behind. Anaku tilted her head at what she perceived Jiyaiya was doing.) "Now, that's just weird..." "Nanoo, nanoo!" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (Once it was all over, the two foxes were still sniggering at Simon's transformation.) "Relax, kid. Sometimes old tricks are the best." Rish: He looks like Hiei's picture in the tabloids. Daggoth: The...what? Rish: The demon with the third eye. He was in the papers, supposedly as an alien invader. Daggoth: Oh, gimme a break... "If worse comes to worse, this always will be useful magic or not." Rish: Hopefully, it won't. Daggoth: But I'll bet it will. (The black kitsune crossed his arms. Despite the humor of a few minutes ago, when they disembarked he was back to a more battle-oriented mentality. He knew America, specifically the states. They liked to jump the gun at alot of things. Why do you think there are so many movies about things going wrong due to the fault of man? But still...this was the area of the airport, which just left one question, as both Daggoth and Rish - who didn't have weapons out at this time - gave a look-around.) Daggoth: Okay, Jiraiya... So far, you've handled this rather well for keeping under the radar. We're not targets except for the possibility of Oni bastards. What's your avenue of escape from here? Was the airport part of the plan or convenient to it? I have an itch of paranoia, standing out here, that needs to be scratched. |

"of course the airport was part of my plan..." Jiraiya said, wandering off towards it, beckoning the group to follow. "Like I really wanted to hitchhike across the country with a group like this. Me and the Lord here, maybe. But a group of us would be a bit weird." Wandering into the airport, Jiraiya's plan seemed to be proved right, as the Nation's elite guards didn't even spare the party a second glance despite Simon's comical disguise. Getting tickets was a fairly hassle-free affair until they spotted a slight problem.... "There's no flights going out of the country..." Simon remarked, staring at the list of departures. "Yeah" Jiraiya said, looking irritated. "that puts a bit of a hamper on our plans, but it's not horrible. We'll fly to the east coast. Exports still go out and imports still come in. If nothing else we can catch a lift on a freighter." "That seems like kind of poor accommodations for someone of my status.." Simon remarked half-smugly. For an answer, Jiraiya merely bonked him on the head. "don't get a big head just yet, kid. we won't fit on the plane if you do." Jiraiya remarked with a completely serious face. "I was just making a joke..." Simon replied, rubbing his head. "let's just get going...I don't wanna loiter here too long." Jiraiya concluded, heading towards their terminal. For some reason he couldn't explain he shared Daggoth's paranoia. The place was a bit too open and there was too much going on that they couldn't control or take control of. Fortunately the flight was uneventful, aside from some rather comical moments on the plane. Most of which involved Jiraiya and the busty stewardess. Do we really need to go into any depth about that? yeah, didn't think so. "well those skies weren't friendly at all..." Jiraiya grumbled, rubbing the side of his face which still bore a bright-red hand-mark. "couldn't even join the mile-high club." "the what?" Simon asked, stepping off the plane with the rest of the group. His somewhat sheltered upbringing had been highly apparent during the flight but, like with Jiraiya's exploits, it was mostly comical. "I'll explain when you're older." Jiraiya replied, waving off the question with a hand as they stepped out of the airport into, of all places, New Jersey. Why Jersey? Well boys and girls, the sad truth was that Jiraiya was a bit strapped for cash. It had taken a few hefty bribes to avoid Simon being reported as a human. For while the Nation's guards had been fooled, some of the psychics back in Kansas hadn't. Looking around now, however, they had much bigger problems. The airport had been, by sheer luck, right near the city's docks and shipyards. Thus they wouldn't have to wander too far on foot to find passage across the sea. The problem, of course, was visible only from Jiraiya's telescope, which he had hastily pulled out of a pocket to help decide which ship they might try and use for their escape from this disturbing place.... "Well, looks like we may have to crush some skulls..." he sighed, looking at the nearest docked ship. "There's Nation on every ship checking cargo. Pretty sure they're psychics too...disguises aren't gonna fool them. Anyone got any ideas?" |
