Keely led Raiya up to the third floor of the dorms and down the hall to her little room. She unlocked the door and stepped inside, waving Raiya in after her.

"Come on in."

It was easily apparent why Keely had no roommate: her room was tiny, easily half the size of the double occupancy ones. It was at the end of the hall, and seemed to have been squeezed in between its neighbor and the outside wall as an afterthought. There was a window set into the wall directly across from the door and another above the bed, the curtains pulled back to let in the sunlight. There was a desk covered with neat piles of books and papers pushed against the wall opposite the bed, as well as a chair. Another door opened into the tiny bathroom and a closet.

The room itself was fairly bare. Keely hadn't been able to take much with her when she flew to Japan, and hadn't been there long enough to have accumulated clutter. There were circus posters up on the walls in several different languages, from Japanese to Russian. On the little table next to the bed were a few books and a small framed picture of Keely's family standing in front of a brightly colored circus tent: her tall, fair haired father standing behind her tiny Japanese mother with her two brothers on one side and Keely herself on the other.

"Make yourself comfortable," she said, pulling over the chair for Raiya.

Her rigging bag was still on the bed where she'd left it. With a grunt of effort, she picked it up and set it carefully down on the floor before flopping down in it's place.

Raiya looked around Keely's room. She was a bit surprised by the size. Her own room had to be at least twice the size. But then, it was a room designed for two people, not one. She hadn't known that there were rooms this size. She now felt very lucky that she had a relatively large room. That way, she didn't get cramped when animls visited her.

"Make yourself comfortable."

Smiling, Raiya settled on the chair Keely had pulled out fo her and dropped her bag on the ground beside it. "Nice room. Mine's a fair bit more cluttered than this. I try to keep it neat an tidy, but animals just don't understand those words. Well, most of them. There are a few that are obsessive about it."

Opening her bag, she began rummaging around. Pulling out two museli bars, she offered one to Kelly. "Here, want one? I'm in the habit of carrying at least a handful of these around with me. being pregnant means you get hungry easily."

Keely took the offered muesli bad gladly.

"Thanks," she said, then fished around under the little table next to the bed. A moment later she produced a small bowel of apples and held it out to Raiya. "Want one?"

She leaned back, resting against the wall behind her bed and munched thoughtfully on the muesli bar. She was eager to start, but when it came right down to it, she was still a little nervous about prying too deeply into her powers. But, she resolved, she'd have to do it eventually, so she might as well now, while she had someone willing to help.

"So," she said, trying to sound more confident than she felt, "Where do we start?"

Smiling, Raiya gave Keely the museli bar and took an apple in return. Making quick work of the bar, she then began nibbling the apple. As she ate, she watched her new friend. From the expressions going across Keely's face, she could tell that the other girl was nervous, but determined.

"So, where do we start?"

Raiya finished her apple. "We'll start with something simply. This is the sort of thing you do in baby steps. Levering herself off the chair, which she couldn't exactly do gracefully anymore, she settled down on the floor. She patted the space in front of her. "Sitting down. We'll get comfortable, and then start."

Keely hopped lightly off the bed and settled herself in front of Raiya. She folded her legs up underneath her and leaned back against the bed. Well, she was as comfortable as she could be while still being slightly nervous.

"Ok," she said, "I'm ready."

((OOC: Sorry for the lame post. Having lack of inspiration...))

(OOC: No prob. I get that sometimes.)

Shifting slightly so her leg wouldn't go numb, Raiya gave Keely a smile. "All right then. We'll start with something simply. Close your eyes. Now, I want you to clear your mind of all thoughts. It sounds easy, but it actually isn't. But keep at it. Once you've cleared your mind, try to hold that state for as long as you can."

To deminstrate, Raiya closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Because of how often she did this, nearly every morning, she could go into a meditive state just with that breath and a trigger thought. The trigger thought was so she didn't go into meditation every time she took a deep breath with her eyes closed.

Because she was advanced in meditation, she was able to keep her mind completely clear and focused, while still being aware of everything going on around her. If someone was to try a sneak attack, or to just try a prank, she'd be able to react instantly. On the flip side, someone could touch her and it would have no effect on her state. Even pain wouldn't disrupt her.

Keely watched Raiya closely as she slipped into her meditation. It looked easy enough. She closed her eyes, started trying to think of nothing. Immediately she became acutely aware of every little noise within her hearing range. Down the hall, a door slammed; someone was playing music somewhere above them; a group of students were laughing on the sidewalk three stories down.

Taking a deep breath like Raiya had, Keely tried to shove these sounds out of her mind. As soon as she did, though, she felt an itch on her elbow and that threw her off again. She sighed inwardly; this was harder than she'd thought. How could you think of nothing?

Then it came to her. When she was on the flying trapeze, there was nothing in her mind but the feeling of what she was doing. She'd always loved that sense of perfect calm that had come over just before stepping off the platform, and she tried to recall it now. Her body visibly relaxed, and her breathing became slow and even. In her mind's eye, she saw her father swinging on the catch bar in front of her, saw him give the signal that he was ready, saw herself leap off into the air, and then...nothing.

She was only able to hold it for a few moments, but she'd done it, she'd completely cleared her mind of every thought. When she realized what she'd done, of course, she lost it instantly, but she didn't care.

"I did it!" she said happily, "Just for a moment, but I did it!"

After she'd let her mind settle with the meditation for a few minutes, Raiya went on to the mental techniques that gave her control over her powers. Tavelling inward, she went the mind palace she'd constructed to contain the more volitile and harder to control aspects of her power. Moving through it, room by room, she checked each one. She'd learned that day to day stresses could cause cracks and breaks in the walls. These creaks and breaks were becoming more common now that she also had the hormonal and emotional swings that came with being pregnant.

Some of the rooms she wouldn't worry as much about finding these weaknesses, but finding one in the largest room of the mind palace would have concerned her greatly. This room was the largest because it held an aspect of her power she couldn't split up. It held the part of her power that gave her complete control over animals. She hated using it, and only opened the door to it when she absolutely had to. As it was, she'd only used it twice since coming to AHS. Both times had been on creatures that hadn't been true animals to her mind, so she didn't feel guilty about it. Besides, the power she kept free was enough to handle all but the most difficult animals.

As she did a careful check of this room, words came echoing to her. "I did it! Just for a moment, but I did it!" Pausing for a second to finish her check, she then rose back to the concious part of her mind. Opening her eyes, she blinked for a moment and then focused on Keely.

She smiled. "Well done. I have to admit, I'm surprised. Usully it takes a person a few meditation sessions to be able to do it. So, have you actually done meditation before?" If that was the case, Raiya realised she'd be able to make things faster. If something else was behind this, she'd still be able to rearrange her estimation for how long it would take to teach her new friend.

"So, have you actually done meditation before?"

Keely leaned back thoughtfully. She hadn't thought so, but maybe she actually had, in a way.

"No, not like this, anyway, sitting down and breathing and being quiet and all. But can something like trapeze count as meditating? When I'm up there, flying, I'm not thinking about anything at all, just feeling what I'm doing and keeping my brain out of the way. That's what I was trying to do here when I got it for a second."

She tried to feel that again, that perfect calm. If she could learn to call that up at will, even if it didn't help her with controlling her powers, it would still be useful.

Raiya frowned thoughtfully. "Well, maybe it is. It does sound like a kind of meditation. Hmm. I've never come across this before, though people who do things that take a lot of concentration do seem to learn meditation quicker than others. Well, we'll just have to test this out. If you can do this consistantly, than it'd make things a lot faster."

"If you can do this consistantly, than it'd make things a lot faster."

"Is that all it is, then?" Keely asked, "Just learning to not think of anything?"

If so, that was a bit of a disappointment. She'd though of meditation as this mystical thing that would help her get control of her powers, but she couldn't see how just not thinking would help her. There had to be something more to it than that...

"Is that all it is, then? Just learning to not think of anything?"

Lifting a hand, she rocked it back and forth. "Yes, and no. It's the basics. You know, the start of things. For some people, that's as far as they go. Often, it's only as far as they need to go. But for people like you and me, we go a lot further. Not just because of the way our powers are, but, at least in my case, because we can. The mind is a very amazing thing and can do pretty much anything you want."

She rolled her shoulders. "All right then. We'll go into that more once you can clear your mind no matter where you are, and keep it that way. For now, it's practice, practice, practice."
