The family sedan sped down a quiet road towards AHS, which could be seen peeking over the road's horizon. The comforting sun hovered prominently overhead, its rays warming up the car on the inside. Nakashige Yamada sat in the passengers seat, quietly humming a tune that was a theme for a younger Kintaro's bedtime. Hiroshi Yamada, with his right wrist perched lazily on the steering wheel, looked into the rear view mirror to study his son's expressions. Kintaro's head turned towards the window, looking at the scenery that they were passing by but not really seeing anything. His mind was busy with thought's about the events that took place that summer. The accident at the lake, the unforgettable first meeting with his dead brother's ghost, the discovery of his supernatural abilities which led his parents to send him to AHS. He didn't resent them for making him go to this institution, but he wasn't entirely sure if he was ready, if the time was right. All this self-doubt, despite his parents' loving words of encouragement, gave Kintaro that uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. Too late to worry about that now, as the school was now only a few minutes away. "Sure you're gonna be ok, son?" Hiroshi asked as he turned into the school's driveway. "We can still turn around." Hiroshi and Nakashige were speechless when Kintaro first told them about his contact with Riku's spirit. They would've given anything to be able to tell their dearly departed first born how much they loved and missed them, and now through Kintaro's new found powers they had that chance. And if he could get in touch with Riku, who else could passively interact with? Their parents? Ancestors? With those possibilities in mind, Kintaro's folks wanted their son to be able to developed his death-based powers, and so the mission to send Kintaro to AHS had begun. Kintaro hesitantly accepted, but he was truly interested in seeing what AHS could offer him. "It's okay, Dad. I'm not afraid anymore." It was a half-truth, but the answer was good enough for his mom and dad. The family car pulled into the school's parking lot... Kintaro reached his assigned dorm room and pushed the door open, which revealed a darkened room with enough simple furnishings to make a comfortable living. Kintaro's hand slid along the wall until he made contact with the light switch and flipped it on. He could now see his room entirely, and a small smile formed on his face. One of the reasons why he accepted to come to AHS was to be able to have his own space. Not that he didn't mind living with his folks, but now he felt like he was his own man, a fresh-faced entry into the grand world of independent living. Kintaro removed his backpack and tossed it onto the couch, then set his suitcase down beside it. He opened the blind in the windows, getting a great view of the colorful meadow. "Hmm..." Kintaro rubbed his chin as he studied the grassy space. "Maybe I can practice over there..." He kept that thought in mind as he began to unpack his belongings and arrange his room to his liking. |

The bed was made with crisp, fresh sheets, warm blankets and a couple of soft down pillows. The cuboards were generously filled with cups, plates, and silverware, more than enough to accompany a full room of visitors. There was an five foot long entertainment center sitting in between a window and the couch that held a sensible stereo system, but was sans television. Kintaro's old TV kicked the bucket a few weeks ago, which was surprising due to the fact that he usually watched TV in the living room. The bathroom was dressed with a couple of towels, a shower curtain and the usual amenities. A poster of a scene from 'Shawshank Redemption', which showed Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins sitting in the prison yard hung next to another poster that dissected each hilarious step John Cleese takes in Monty Python's 'The Ministry of Silly Walks' sketch. Kintaro stood in his small kitchen, looking up from the apple he was slicing up to the Monty Python poster. He smiled, remembering the first time he watched that sketch at a friends' house during a birthday/sleepover party. Looking around, he was content with the job he did on arranging his room together, a job he never got to do on his own. It felt odd being out of the nurturing blanket of his parents, but the feeling of independence at his age was refreshing. He considered himself to be lucky to be in the position that he was in; his friends back home would die for a chance to live like this, although he wish that his circumstance behind his transfer were less tragic. A soft hush of wind flowed in through the window, cooling the room a few degrees. Kintaro placed a couple of apple slices into his palm and walked towards the open window. He bit one in half, savoring the sweet fruit while looking out of the window to the meadow. Taking a closer look, he though a could make out spots in the grass that looked like dirt patches or holes. "Craters?" he thought. From what his parents told him and the websites he visited during his reconnaissance mission to find out more about this puzzling campus, all the students attending AHS had some kind of incredible power, powers which could do a lot more than move some earth around. Kintaro swallowed his last piece of apple and walked to his door, opening it to allow the cool air to infiltrate his room. He poked his head out past the door frame, looking left and right, but saw nothing but a long stretch of hallways and closed doors on either side. "Where's everybody at?" he asked himself and shrugged as a response. Stepping back inside to retrieve another piece of apple, he considered roaming the grounds in search of some fellow students to talk to and learn more about this infamous academy that was the subject of many juvenile gossip that flooded the hallways of his old school. He was feeling tuckered out from the tiring move and the long drive, but it probably wouldn't hurt to take a quick look around. Plus, he had to practice his powers, if only for a little bit. Kintaro was pretty adamant about trying to increase his skill with his abilities, although seeing the cloudy silhouettes of the deceased still left him uncomfortable and tense. He owed it to Riku, and as he clutched the crustal pendant he wore around his neck, he remembered the words of his dead older brother. "...The stronger your power becomes, the brighter it gets. When it becomes solid white, something fantastic will happen. I’ll be watching you, my dear brother…” "Riku..." Kintaro sighed and let go of the pendant, retiring to the couch for a while to eat his apple slice and watch the clouds go by in the window. |

I am walking. It is dark....but maybe I'm blind. There are no lights, no sounds, no tangible evidence that I'm still on the planet. Where am I going? My legs are like concrete and feel as if they are on fire, yet I carry on deeper into the void. I want to stop, but my will is not my own. Wait...something up ahead, piercing the darkness. A light? A light! I'm not blind! Moving forward, the light grows brighter with every step. There's something else there, standing in front of the light. Who is that? Kintaro's eyes opened to the world, squinting as natural light penetrates through the window. He inhales deeply and sits up on his couch, rubbing the back of his head and trying to make sense of his cryptic dream. "What was that about?" He asks himself as he rubs his sleepy eyes. His retinas adjust properly and the world regains focus. His hands unconsciously rub together between his knees as he looks out of the window to the cheery sky that is passing him by. With such a picturesque view of the cool blue sky, there was an ephemeral moment where it felt as if he was still dreaming, but in a far more pleasant place. The sight relaxed his mind, burying those anxious thoughts and feelings deep within that mass of tissue and neurons. It was then he remembered that he wanted to see the campus' meadow and get some practice in with his abilities. He stood up from his seat and stretched his arms high into the air, letting a heavy yawn escape him. He had to admit, he felt a bit better than before, despite the odd dream. Hopefully this rejuvenation of sorts would factor into the duration of his practice; maybe he could sustain his powers for longer than ten minutes. Kintaro took that first step and felt something crunch beneath his feet. "Aw man..." Kintaro sighed, thinking that he had stepped on a very large cockroach. He picked up his foot and examined the potentially stomach-churning mush that he dug into the carpet. For the sake of his appetite, he did not find roach guts under his shoes, but instead he found the crushed remains of the slice of apple was eating before he dozed off. Relieved, he grabbed some paper towels from the kitchen and removed all traces of apple from the floor. And after tossing the crumpled paper towel in the trash, Kintaro walked out of his dorm room, locking the door behind him, and headed for the meadow. Edited by Ghetty, Apr 24 2009, 06:57 AM.
