Kintaro walked along the path towards the meadow, tugging on the collar of his uniform. It was take some time to get used to wearing this, but at least the assigned clothing looked nice, and the girls he passed on the way looked adorable in their skirts and blouses. Kintaro blushed slightly at the thought of this. He hadn't been in such close proximity to females, but now he didn't really have any other choice. It wouldn't be a bad idea to try an introduce himself to the other students after he finished practicing his powers.

Kintaro took his first step into the round, flower-ridden area and was impressed by the serenity of the meadow. He noticed a few craters dug into the ground, signs of other students working on their own abilities. He was curious to see what kind of powers he would come across as the year progressed. Walking around the meadow, he saw that not even the surrounding trees that formed a natural border were safe from arrows, swords, blasts or any other kind of attacks that he once imagined were only limited to the inked superheros he read in comic books. Seeing remnants of trees that suffered from a major attacked led Kintaro to believe that there had to be some pretty powerful students walking around campus. Perhaps maybe on of those cute girls he had passed on the way here.

With the sun providing warmth overhead, Kintaro walked to the center of the meadow to begin practicing. First, he made sure his feet were planted with his right foot set behind him. He had toppled over the first few times he attempted to generate his barrier, mostly due to the shock of his ability to create such a thing out of R.L.L. Next, he clapped his hands and rubbed them together before sticking his palms straight out in front of him. Kintaro closed his eyes and concentrated, building up energy that he could feel warming the center of his palms. The wind slightly picked up, causing the trees and taller flowers and grass to lean to and fro, as if to get a better look at what Kintaro was attempting to do.

Bright yellow energy sparked from Kintaro's palms, looking like a miniature lightning storm. He focused his mind, and redirected nearby R.L.L. to feed into his outward palms. He had to be careful about the amount of energy he channeled, as he wasn't experienced enough to handle a great deal of this kind of power. Soon enough, a yellow square formed in front of his hands and began to grow in size until it was about 3'x3' in size. The energy he was displacing kicked up the wind around him. The dirt swirled up wards, his uniform flapping uncontrollably and the flowers and grass tangled around each other. Kintaro's face projected focused calm as he attempted to hold the barrier up for as long as he could. Eventually he opened his eyes to see the shield hovering in front of him. The sight was still unbelievable to see: a square barrier, crackling with spirit energy, filtering anything in front of it with a golden tint.

About eight minutes had passed and Kintaro was beginning to feel the effects of prolonged use of this power. His head began pounding like a series of jackhammers attacking his skull. His knees became weak and his vision was starting blurring to the point where everything in front of him was seen as a regurgitation of colors. He began to breath heavily, streaks of sweat rolling down his face and dampening his collar. With an exasperated gasp, Kintaro canceled the barrier by dropping his hands. He collapsed to the the ground face first, but managed to roll over onto his back as he took in deep breaths. His sight was still obstructed, with black spots forming in his vision. If he held the barrier any longer...Kintaro shook the thought out of his head. The wind had died down to a gentle breeze, cooling his steaming forehead, the sudden chill giving him goosebumps all over his body.

((If you are reading this, please look at Kintaro's profile, checking 'The Dead Zone' power, to see how one would view Kintaro from the physical world))

Groaning softly, Kintaro sat up on the yielding field of grass, pulling his right leg in so his foot rested parallel to the ground. His headache was subsiding, but he was still feeling a bit lightheaded from sustaining his barrier and he wanted to have a clear head before he took that giant step into the afterlife.

"Maybe I should buy a stopwatch," Kintaro thought, ripping a handful of grass out of the stirred earth and tossing it frivolously into the air. There was currently no way for him to tell how long he could use his powers in one sitting, and he was curious to know if he was making any progress. The tempestuous amount of concentration left him no room to hypothesize his average amount of time spent using his powers; he wondered if he was really increasing his skill at all. If he had to make a guess, he would say about ten minutes or so, but the discouraging thing was that it didn't seem any longer today than it did when was practicing in secludes spots all over his hometown.

"Arg...gotta keep trying..." Kintaro stood up from his sitting position, taking care to wipe off any dirt or loose grass that had stuck to his uniform. He sure as hell didn't want to have to pay for a replacement outfit already and possible get in bad with the school faculty for messing up his clothes. But perhaps, because of the inconceivable nature of this academy, messing up a school uniform was a common occurrence. Pushing that though aside for the moment, Kintaro's head was free and clear, ready (not on pins and needles) to enter The Dead Zone.

His eyes shut, Kintaro began feeding his body and the surrounding area with concentrated R.L.L. As he body grew warmer, all the color from the world around him melted away, turning the once-bright scenery into a dull, dismal pallet of gray. Kintaro's eyes opened at this point, as he was fond of watching the world lose it's luster out of curiosity. So surreal was this particular ability that Kintaro felt he had to witness it himself or it wouldn't seem...'real'.

As the color faded, silhouettes of ghosts began to materialize into his view. This haunting sight of the dead shuffling around the earth gave him chills everytime he laid eyes on their simple outlines. Kintaro was now totally immersed in this macabre reality; turning around, he could see AHS behind him looking like a building in a photo from long ago. "Crazy..." he thought, before turning his attention towards the phantoms. As of now, he wasn't able to communicate very well with these spirits and he had just as much time to explore as he did when he was projecting his shield. So he spent the small amount of time that he had asking simple yes or no questions to a handful of ghosts. It was surprising how nonchalant these ghost appeared to be, despite having a lack of distinguishing features. The spirits would always respond to his questions, and they seemed to be so cool about it, sometimes taking a seat or leaning up against a tree or a building or something as Kintaro spoke to them. This trip, like all the others, didn't have any real significance to it. He asked a few ghost if they used to live around here, or if they had family nearby. Nothing special in his line of questions. But he did wonder why the spirits were so calm about a living being infiltrating the afterlife. Were there more people with his abilities? He wouldn't be able to know until he was able to ask more detailed questions and hear more personal responses.

That unwanted pounding returned to his head--it was time to leave. Kintaro thanked the spirits for their time, bowed and prepared himself to return to the physical world.

--ssskkkzznnngggttt....shhhhhhhh.......--

A throaty inhalation through the nostrils, followed by the sucking of air in through his teeth. This is how Kintaro wakes up every time he withdraws from the Dead Zone. There was once difference this time around; he usually didn't get a taste of loose grass, dirt and flower pedals. With a slight look of disgust on his face, Kintaro spit out any foreign objects that were sucked into his mouth and returned them to the earth where they belonged. He then rose to his feet, staggering along the way as he was still feeling woozy and sluggish. The color had returned to the world once again, that bright yellow star in the sky as prominent as the rows of chromatic flowers that populated the meadow. Soon he lost that feeling of a major headache and the accompanying dizzyness, and began to brush off any dirt that was stuck onto his clothing.

"Damn, I wish my departures were a bit more comfortable..." he muttered as he flicked off some grass that was plastered onto his tie. He straightened his tie, then folded his arms across his chest as if he were getting ready to scold someone. "...Don't think I lasted any longer in there than before. *sigh* I'm tryin', Riku, but this is tough..." Kintaro looked towards the heavens with disappointment etched on his face. He had met his deceased brother in person, along with the faint outlines of anonymous spirits, but still wasn't sure if he was looking down at him from that heavenly kingdom that had its foundation built on the clouds. Was there even a heaven or hell to begin with? Then, what do you call the world that he delves into where the dearly departed are free to roam around? It's not Purgatory, is it? Kintaro understood Purgatory to be like a waiting room without the Home & Gardens magazines lying about. And surely it wouldn't have where location he was standing in as the backdrop...right? Religion and its many theories and practices went completely over Kintaro's head, but he was sure his abilities would make any priest or rabbi or equivalent man of faith's hair fall right off of their head. Secretly though, despite his religious ignorance, he was curious to find out what life after death was really all about.

It was time to stop mulling over these mysteries and get back to AHS. He had to find out his class schedule, and get himself something to eat in the process. He wondered how friendly the general populous was at AHS, as he would need some help in navigating the winding corridors if he wanted to get anywhere without a hitch. Maybe making a friend or two would help him get his mind off of his anxieties.
