Three companions entered the cafeteria from the snow. During their trek from the meadow to the cafeteria, the snow had started to come down worse. It wasn't bad but it hadn't reached its peak. The weather channel had called for a lot of snow. They were looking at the roads being closed over night. The cafeteria was warm and was filled with a light chatter from other students. Some were coming in to get out of the snow, others were getting ready to head back to their room to hunker down for the night. Some just didn't care whether it got worse because the dorms weren't too far away. Aurora smiled as she pulled off her hat and gloves. Her small hands stuffed said garments into pockets of her coat. Her cheeks were flushed pink and her eyes were bright in the fluorescent light. She shook off the snow from her coat and boots. It was already starting to meet. "Well it smells really good in here," she said in her childish voice. "What do you guys think?" she asked Richard and Nadia. |

Richard took of his gloves and unzipped his jacket, he ran his fingers through his wet hair several times to clear out the water. He liked snow, but only up to point. He cast his vision across the cafetaria floor, looking for a place to sit. He massaged his left elbow that he injured after he slipped on Nadia's ice, it didn't look too bad, perhaps a bruise tomorrow but nothing serious. Richard did however, get the distinct impression that Dal had a smirk on his face when it happened, he resolved to ask the overgrown lizard about it later. Albeit through the safe use of letters. Flicking a few drops of water from his fingertips at Dal, he turned and looked at the two girls. " My experiences regarding Japanese food are mostly confined to packets of instant noodles and suspicious looking raw fish served by someone who may or may not have been Japanese, I was rather hoping you'd enlighten me " He grinned. Stepping into the cafeteria, Nadia began to brush the layer of ice that had formed over her skin and clothes because of her power. She knew that she'd never get it all, reaching every inch of her body wasn't within her flexibility, but she wanted to get rid of most of it. She'd look strange enough in her shorts and tank top. Adding ice that didn't melt would tip things into the extra weird, even for a school for metas. Seeing Richard rubbing his elbow, she felt a little guilty. She had warned him and Aurora not to walk too close to her, so it was technically his fault, but still. The fact that Dal was smugly amused wasn't helping. The little dragon always seemed to find people slipping over on the ice enormously funny. " My experiences regarding Japanese food are mostly confined to packets of instant noodles and suspicious looking raw fish served by someone who may or may not have been Japanese, I was rather hoping you'd enlighten me " Nadia ruffled her hair to dislodge ice. "I tend to avoid this place, because Dal always creates a stir. I do know a bit about Japanese food, though. But you don't really have to worry. They have dishes from all around the world here. I'm sure you'll find something you like. The only thing is you'll have to order in Japanese. You do know how to speak it, right?" She asked because they had been conversing in English. |

" Err, well you see.. I may have been sort of absent during most of my Japanese language classes " Richard said sheepishly. He had found the language to be quite a hassle, it was not so much the pronounciation and grammar that he had difficulty with. But more the alphabet. Three different alphabets? he'd had enough problem with just one. And thus his Japanese was limited to pointing and making strange incomprehensible noises. These tend to drive the people he was speaking with, to suddenly remember that they had to be somewhere else. Richard remembered one particular trip to the zoo where he was trying to find the lion enclosure. His attempts at soliciting information from the keepers involved growling and making faces at them, while ruffling his hair to imitate a lion's mane. He didn't have to speak Japanese to guess what the effect of seeing a wild haired gaijin growling, and drooling at them were. He left before they could get the tranquilizer gun out. He had learned a few words. but so far it was still only really sufficient to make it painfully obvious to other people that he didn't speak Japanese. " I'll uh.. I'll manage " |

Aurora giggled as she watched him rub his sore elbow. He had hit the ice pretty hard. She had just glided over it. Her small boots didn't leave anything to keep traction on the ice or snow. Then again, her small body didn't have very far to fall if she had fallen. "Does Dal enjoy the attention when you do come here?" Aurora asked Nadia. The dragon fascinated her to no end and she wanted to learn more about him. She looked at all the food. It smelled nice in here and she knew what sounded good. Chicken Teriyaki. It was actually the first time she had come here. A lot of time she had eaten in her room while unpacking her stuff. Aurora was settled into her room now which was why she had been out on the snow. "I know a lot of Japanese. My mom thought it was crucial to teach me so I could speak it," she said with a smile. She wasn't sure what the people would say about her size though. Had the school warned the cafeteria people about her looking like a child? What would happen if they refused to give her food because they thought she had a older sibling or parents here? "Would you like help, Richard?" she asked with a smile. It didn't seem to her like he was confident in his ability to speak the language. Edited by chibisango01, Jan 31 2010, 03:13 PM.

Nadia shrugged when asked if Dal liked the attention. "He doesn't mind it. He always likes meeting new people. I'm the one that doesn't like the attention. Any time people gather around, I get so tense that I loose my appetite." Satisfied that if Richard couldn't speak enough Japanese to get what he wanted across Aurora would help him, Nadia stepped up to the line of students waiting to order. She couldn't help but tense when a person took the spot behind her, bracketing her between people. This was another thing she hated about the cafeteria. She was always afraid she'd touch someone while in the line. Finally it was her turn to order. "Could I have three nikuman, a bowl of nabeyaki udon, a slice of chocolate mud cake and two rice puddings?" Collecting her order, she carried her tray to a free table. Sitting down, she gave Dal two of the nikuman and the rice puddings and kept the rest for herself. Pulling a pair of wooden chopsticks apart, she began to eat the nikuman while she waited for the other two. |

Richard thought about the offer for a second or two, then decided that getting help from a seven year old would be rather embarrasing. So he resolved to try and tackle this problem by himself. " Haha, no need Aurora, I'm sure I can manage, how hard can it be eh? " he replied. He eyed the selection of dishes on offer at the counter, but couldn't really identify anything appealing. There was something that looked like chicken, which would probably be his safest option. Or perhaps some noodles? he could make out several pictures of noodle dishes on the menu behind the counter. Unfortunately for him they were written in Japanese, and he was not about to put something in his mouth that would turn out to be fish sperm* or some other nasty delicacy. Muttering a curse under his breath, he stepped up to the counter and placed his order. " Can I have the..err, chicken,um...thing? " he asked The blank faced expression he got from the small but formidable looking cafeteria lady didn't seem to be very encouraging though. " uhh, chicken? poultry? bird? " he said, flapping his arms in a horrible imitation of a chicken in flight. Cafeteria lady narrowed her eyes at him, and what was worse, the whole of the cafeteria seemed to be equally perplexed at his attitude. Richard sighed and jerked his thumb at Aurora. " I'll have what she's having " he said with a defeated expression on his face *(OOC) : I really did have fish sperm in Japan once..suffice to say that once was enough, and that it was the only time I ever had sperm in my mouth I should hasten to add Edited by KZ26, Feb 1 2010, 06:00 AM.

Aurora watched Nadia get in line for food. She waited for Richard to say whether he needed her help or not. She wasn't excellent in the language but she was proficient. Annabelle had made sure she knew how to say almost everything. The mother had been all over the world working on her books. In order for it to be accurate, she had learned many different languages. When it was their turn to order, she listened to Richard while stifling a giggled. She had to give him credit for trying to learn the language. When he pointed at her, she stepped up to the counter and looked at the woman who didn't seem to pleased with his efforts. "I'd like Tonkatsu Donburi and a medium coke," she said with a smile. The lady nodded and combined their orders thinking that they were siblings or something like that. Aurora pulled out her money and put her half on the counter after the lady had told them the total. "It's deep fried breaded pork cutlet, egg and onions on top of the rice. I hope that's alright with you?" she asked him. Their food was served on two separate trays. Aurora grabbed hers and waited for Richard before going to where Nadia sat. She sat in the chair and broke her chopsticks and started eating. The rice was her favorite part. Her village didn't always have meat year round so she had grown found of other things. Rice was a rare treat for her. "Nadia, can I ask you something?" Aurora said looking at the older girl. |

Nadia watched the minor fiasco of Richard attempting to order and smiled to herself. So much for managing. He'd have to learn Japanese if he wanted to be able to do anything outside the school, and a number of things inside the school. Nadia decided that seeing as she was pretty good at Japanese, living here for a year made sure of that, she'd teach him. After all, it wouldn't be fair if she gave Aurora help on something important without giving Paul the same help. Sure, learning a language wasn't the same as getting a body back, but it was important. For his part, Dal was complete absorbed in eating his food. Sitting back on his hind legs and tail, he held one of the nikuman balls in his front paws and took delicate bites out of it. The rice balls with the spiced ground pork filling were one of his favourite non-sweet foods and he always savored them. And for such a small creature, he could pack away a lot of food. Seeing that Aurora had come to Richard's rescue, Nadia went back to her food. Finishing her nikuman, she then went on to the nabeyaki udon. She smiled over at Aurora when the other girl sat down. "Nadia, can I ask you something?" Swallowing her mouthful of noodles, Nadia nodded. "Sure." |

Aurora smiled and took a few seconds to think how she'd phrase the question. As she did she ate a few more bites of food. She knew what she wanted to ask but wasn't quite sure how to go about asking it. She had only taken a few trips out of Alaska so she had never gotten any real experience with talking to people. "Are you and Dal best friends? Or is having a best friend thats not human possible?" she said slowly as if choosing the right words carefully. She wondered that because Lily was her best friend. They had always been there for each other. Aurora hadn't really had a human best friend. In that sense. She had friends but her whole life she was different so she couldn't really get to know them and some parents didn't care for their children to be seen with her. But most of the villagers loved her. She was still learning about the world that was beyond the Indian village of Eek. |

(OOC) : There was confusion on my part as to who was up next, sorry! Balancing his plate in his hands, Richard made his way towards the girld as they sat down to eat. Sitting down, he snapped the chopsticks separate and began to eat. Deep fried pork cutlet was a revelation, if a ll the food were like this, he didn't think he'd have any problems living in japan at all. He listened to Aurora's question and pondered it for a few seconds. He never really had any close friends, there were people he hung out with, but the fact that he might never see them again never filled him with any particular sadness. Personally he didn't think there would be any issues with having a friend that wasn't human. So long as they or it were good natured htne he didn't suppose there would be any problems at all. And from what he could gather from Nadia and Dal's realtionship. It didn't seem like a master and her pet sort of thing, mind you it would be quite difficult to consider someone who was clearly intelligent, be they human or not, as a pet. Chewing his food thoughtfuly he waited to see what Nadia's answer would be |

"Are you and Dal best friends? Or is having a best friend thats not human possible?" Nadia ate in silence for a few moments as she considered Aurora's question. How should she answer? What was the relationship she had with Dal? "Well, yes and no. Dal is my friend, probably my best friend and the best friend I'll ever have. But our relationship goes deeper than that. Because of how my power brought him to life, we have a link. Our minds are connected, but not just that. Our essences, our souls I guess you could say, are connected, if that makes sense." Nadia hoped that she'd explained things right. She'd never had to put her connection to Dal into words before. It was just there, beyond and above consciousness. It was a part of them, as much as anything. |

Aurora smiled and nodded. She seemed content with that answer. What went through her mind was often a mystery. Her feet swung as she ate. The food was good and it was different. Her face was slowly turning back to normal from the cold. The only friend she had was Lily. That husky had saved her life more then once and Aurora owed her a lot. She needed to find her body and get it back. Her gaze took in her two new friends. They would help her find her body. Lily would be happy to know that she was making friends at her new school. She turned to Richard. "Do you have a best friend, Richard?" she asked him. Despite having few friends she thought that everyone had to at least have one best friend, if not a close friend. |

" A best friend? " Richard asked " Umm, nope. I had many friends, but none that were particularly close " he continued. " I never felt the need for a best friend you know? " Richard paused and drew a deep breath " It would've been nice I suppose, but what can I say? " " I'm just weird like that, maybe I've got issues or something " He grinned. " Does that seem odd to you? " he asked his three companions Richard thought about it some more as he ate, he was never anti social, and would always be willing to muck about with other children. But even when he did team sports, he never got very close to any particular one of his teammates. There were people he hung out with, and incidentally got into trouble with also. But as for any particular attachments? Richard never felt any. Sometimes he thinks that in that regard, he really was his father's son. The elder Sharp never got too close with any of his fellow soldiers in the regiment either. Something about not liking to see his friends die or get hurt he once said. Perhaps it came with being an officer, but Richard got the distinct impression that his father was like that with all of the soldiers regardless of rank. |

Nadia listened to Richard answer Aurora's about having a best friend. As she did, she thought idly that the whole thing of best friends was becoming less common nowadays. People had acquaintances and casual friends, but no-one really close. It was sad. " Does that seem odd to you? " Nadia shook her head. "That seems to be getting more and more common. People just aren't as close as they used to be. Not surprising, considering how impersonal communication has become. People just don't have true best friends anymore. they might call a person their best friend, but they aren't truly that." |

"It is odd. I agree with Nadia, true best friends are hard to come by. Even on the reservation, no one really had best friends. Maybe because we were all taught to work together and depend on each other. My only best friend was Lily," Aurora said. Her swinging legs slowed down for a moment before picking up the normal pace. She really thought that everyone needed at least one best friend. Someone to see you at your best and worst, besides a spouse. Someone who could be there when you need them. "I think everyone should have one. I know I'd like a best friend who I could depend on anything for and know we'll be there for each other no matter what," she told them with a smile. |

" Well it would be nice, the thing is, I think it's very difficult to find someone who's willing to risk their own happines or welfare for someone else " Richard swallowed the last of his food, and took a sip of water before continuing " I just think that most people would be more inclined to choose themselves over other people, which is perfectly understandable " " You can only know if someone's a true friend or not when the brown stuff hits the fan " " when someone is wiling to stand by you through the most difficult of times, thats when you know you've got a real friend " Richard drained his glass, and looked at his companions with a smile " I'm not saying that I think you're all like that by the way " |

In a show of dexterity, Nadia twirled noodles onto her chopsticks. "Before Dal, I didn't have any close friends. I was always shy and I spent my early childhood being home schooled, so I didn't really know how to make friends." Sighing, she ate the noodles. "I agree with Richard. People do seem to be inclined to choose themselves over others. The age of chivalry and kindness for kindness's sake is pretty much over. Even altruism often has selfish origins. Everyone's thinking about what doing such and such will get them and how helping so and so will benefit them. It's sad, and a bit sickening. People are so caught up in their own materialistic gains and doing things only when they will get something out of it that the heart has gone out of the world. People give to charities because of tax rebates and so they can brag that they're doing something to make the world better. All the while they turn their backs on people in need every day." She shook her head, because she was going to start ranting if she wasn't careful. She really hated the state of the world. Consumerism had killed the heart of the human race. Now it was all me, me, me. "I think everyone should have one. I know I'd like a best friend who I could depend on anything for and know we'll be there for each other no matter what," Nadia returned Aurora's smile. "Yeah. You're right." " when someone is wiling to stand by you through the most difficult of times, thats when you know you've got a real friend. I'm not saying that I think you're all like that by the way " Nadia laughed. "I'm glad." Shaking her head, she finished her noodles. "My powers actually give me a very good way of telling if someone will be a good friend or not. If they don't trust that I'll make sure that my powers don't hurt them, then they aren't cut out to be a true friend." |

Aurora swallowed her food. It looked like Nadia and her had grown up similarly. She had been home schooled but didn't have any close friends. Everyone had not dared to get close because her eyes color was so different. The Indians didn't know anything of metas so they didn't really trust what wasn't a norm. "I was home schooled too. I wasn't extremely shy. It was more like they were weary around me. I was different then the rest and they knew it but didn't know why," she said. "I don't think everyone is in it for materialistic items. But that doesn't mean I disagree with you. Up in Eek, many people weren't sure about me because my skin was lighter and I have red eyes. Even though I was born there they never fully accepted me. Everyone in the village is dark complexed with brown eyes. I think some people won't willingly help a stranger or someone somewhat different. It's kind of like a survival skill. Then again Indians sometimes don't take to change very well," Aurora said with a shrug. She ate some more of her food. It was slowly cooling off and she wanted to eat it while it was warm. After a few more bites she looked at Richard and laughed with Nadia. "I certainly take no offense to it," she said and nodded at Nadia. "I guess thats a good way to know if you have a good friend or not." "I think you two are both really good friends to me even though we just met. I don't think a person who knew I was in trouble, would normally go help me find me body knowing that they could be in danger too," she said smiling at them. Perhaps they could even become best friends. Only time would tell. |

" Richard asked with a deadpan expression " Just kidding Aurora " He smiled, Richard figured it wouldn't be the first time that his life would be in danger. And if it hadn't been for Aurora, just a few moments ago he could very nearly have eaten food that might have ended up having been attached to an animal's nether region. " You saved me from consuming whatever that black stuff I'd been looking at was " Richard said grinning. " This is the least I could do " He turned to Nadia, and smiled " And what about you? any dramas we can help you with? Dragon going rouge? Jealous boyfriends? Obnoxious teacher?" |

"Perhaps one day everyone will be able to accept people who are different then their self," Aurora said and then took a few more bites of rice and pork. The kids played with her until she got older. Children played with everyone because they didn't know that people were different and some should be feared. Once they had turned 8, the children started straying from her. That was the time Lily and her became close. "Please let us know if you need help," she added with a big smile. "Despite being small, I'd love to help as best as I can." Aurora really wanted to help others but couldn't do much until she got her body back. Her powers weren't going to grow a lot while she was in this body. She looked out at the snow that was falling. It didn't seem to be getting any better. "What about you Richard? You have anything you need help with. Besides getting better at Japanese?" |

" Do my homework for me? " Richard said with puppy eyes at the two girls " There's....Nothing really " He said with a sheepish laugh. " I guess I've had a pretty boring life so far " He said with a sad smile " Which is why I'm offering to help you get your body back " he brightened up once more at the prospect of an adventure. " I need some excitement in my life, otherwise I won't have any stories with which to impress the girls here " Richard laughed. " Say.. Aurora, when you said it might be dangerous getting your body back, how do you mean? " He asked. He'd been flicking the remaining grains of rice at Dal, trying to annoy the dragon for laughing at him when he fell on the ice earlier on. |

"Perhaps one day everyone will be able to accept people who are different then their self," "We can but hope." It was a nice thought, though a bit unrealistic given the human race's history. Accepting things freely just didn't seem part of the populace as a whole. A handful might be that way, but it never carried on fully. Humans were just too fearful of the world around them. And when a human feared something, they quickly turned that fear to hate and then they would want to destroy that thing. Nadia laughed at Richard's joking response to Aurora's question about needing help with anything. "Oh Richard, I thought you were a good and honorable person. Now I find out your just like everyone else. I'm crushed, just crushed." Nadia's tone, and the mischievous look in her eyes, showed clearly that she was joking. She swallowed the last of her food. "You know, having an interesting life isn't always a good thing." Rather than get annoyed by Richard flicking grains of rice at him, Dal was happily picking them up with a claw and eating them. If Richard wanted to give away his food, Dal was more than happy to eat it for him. |
